Tumblr decides it wants to become much less valuable.

Samtemdo8:
We already have Rule 34 and hell even Deviantart why do people think putting their porn art on Tumblr?

I found those other sites unnecessarily more complicated to browse. Tumblr, at least most blogs, was a simple "scrolls down one neat row" site.

It would also be interesting to see what they would say is art and smut. If someone did a rendition of the Birth of Venus out of clay or a different style of painting would that be flagged as adult content for the nudity or would that be high art?

Not trying to defend it but there are going to be those that will try to get some things passed the radar that are smut, and this might flag some things that are more conventional acceptable "high art".

As far as I can recall, I have literally never, in my entire life, read anything on Tumblr. I strongly suspect from reading other people's references to it that not having ever visited it is very much a positive.

Needless to say, I could not give the slightest damn what it does or what happens to it. Except perhaps that if it's serving as a dustbin holding the internet garbage of people I don't want to hear from, in which case here's to it's long, continued existence so such denizens are less likely to colonise bits of the internet I do frequent.

Well, must suck to be Tumblr right now.

Eh, Tumblr is standing their ground on keeping Nazi stuff there. As long as it's fully clothed Nazi stuff, gotta have some standards.

Hey, gotta respect those Nazi family values, dude!

Oh, um, on topic...never visited there myself. Isn't, like, porn everywhere else anyway?

undeadsuitor:
Eventually it got to the point where the Tumblr phone app was removed from the Google store which is where this drastic ban comes from.

Apple Store. It was removed from the Apple store, not the Google store.

undeadsuitor:
Keep in mind that like twitter, they're fine with Nazis and stuff posting but female titty 2 much.

Really, all they even tried to ban before was illegal content and certain types of extreme porn (and most of that they didn't ban so much as make the most direct related terms not show up on search results, which just meant people searched around related terms). Now, the community of tumblr was such that if you were a Nazi you'd better be as anonymous as possible, unless you're a Nazi furry (which for some reason is less bad?). Because stepping out of line of that bastion of inclusivity and love (for example drawing a shape shifting space rock too thin or too pastel) led to doxing and threats.

Marik2:
How come the media never attacked tumblr for that?

Because it didn't serve the correct political narrative.

The one thing I will say about this - I find it deeply amusing the number of people upset about this who in past cases of sites banning content or developers censoring their creations over outrage would call out things like "It's a company making a private business decision, so there's nothing wrong with it."

As i understand, other sites doesn't have it as diverse and neatly (dis)organized.

Yeah, but Tumblr has way less invasive virus and malware ads. Even using things like adblock still leads to sites automatically opening other windows in the background while you're distracted. Plus, it was really easy to find a whole lot of neatly organized images of certain niches. There were actual communities around these porn blogs, and rather nice ones too.

Well, then between the virus laiden aids and the living embodyment of Godwins law, I suggest we pull up a comfy chair, get a good drink, some popcorn, and watch the invitable bonfire.

So, beyond the whole "OMG what about the bewbs!", there's actually a bunch of weird censorship going on behind this.

Anything tagged "gay", "queer", "trans" or "pride", as well as a lot of specific tags to do with these things is being purged. Also, for some inexplicable reason, a bunch of stuff tagged with disability related tags, such as "chronic pain" and "chronic illness" have been deleted.

Meanwhile, the Nazis get to stay..

Elfgore:
Man, if actual CP was present on the site and if they couldn't find a way to prevent just it... yeah, I understand axing the whole thing.

Maybe take it from an internet hick like myself, but I thought Tumblr was already on a downward spire. I don't think I've heard much from it after like 2014. But I'm pretty ignorant of online communities that aren't this one.

They could find a way to prevent it. Namely, hiring a staff to mod the site. That's not even getting into the issue of how it was a lot easier to find Nazi and white supremacy blogs on the site than porn.

Hell, I've seen instances of actual porn go unflagged by their new program.

Its because their censor bot is shit

Communities around porn, eh?

Coming together over masturbation.

This is not some big pro Nazi conspiracy, it's an attempt to offload genuine curation from human hands onto fledgling AI systems.

Some sales cowboy managed to convince the folks at Yahoo that their algorithm could handle it. When anyone with a passing hint of foresight could tell you that technology is no where near that level yet.

tumblr is looking for the cheapest way to deal with an unlikely legal issue by breaking the foundations of its own social media platform. It seems one just needs to hint at the idea of kiddy porn and studio execs start doing backflips to prove how much they are not into kiddy porn. Methinks they doth protest too much.

Its not censorship, its an element of the type of bot they're using. If you don't feel like spending a lot of time or money to figure out a complex blocking system, or have people do it by hand per Nintendo, what you do instead is train a simple bot by having it read the common markers found on a preselected chunk of porn pages, and then block anything that comes up with a certain number of hits against those markers. Chances are tags like queer, trans, gay show up on a lot of porn pages. Other tags that don't seem like they are porn related are probably getting picked up because they were found to be used as euphemisms for other words, phrases, or initials (C hronic P ain) that they want to get rid of. That last one is a guess, I'm not checking that on any device I'm associated with, but often codewords can be as simple as same initials.

If it isn't fixed, the results are the same as censorship.

Well, if you choose to define censorship as any action intentional or not to block content from a site then yes, you are correct. But then even if they do fix it, you're still censoring stuff, just more specifically. And so would basically every code of conduct I guess. I'm not especially interested in exploring the relative applications of the word censor nor the merits of censoring one thing vs another though, so you're going to have to go it alone if that was the conversation you were looking for.

There's also the bit where A) SESTA and FOSTA are hilariously broken pieces of legislation where a company can be sued into the ground even if they host sex trafficking, kiddie porn, or sex work unknowingly. Making Tumblr (And Facebook) freak the fuck out. Seriously, check out the new heights of dumbassery FB is up to. According to their new TOS, saying "I'm gay" in your profile could get you banned.

B) labeling anything remotely LGBT related as inherently sexual.

All in service to a couple of laws that aren't going to effect the aforementioned sex trafficking and kiddie porn in any significant way, while fucking up marginalized folk's lives in the worst way. It's to the point that sex work advocates, lawyers, and police departments are calling it bullshit that's hurting people. It's so inherently fuck-headed that I can only assume that

C) This set of laws is intentionally trying to get people back into the closet, with the "ending sex trafficking/kiddie porn" thing as a charade to get "liberals" to back it. Sure that's conspiracy, but at this point, sufficiently advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice.

Side note: nobody is saying the Facebook or Tumblr don't have "the right" to run their private platform as they want. This isn't a first amendment issue, strictly speaking.
To paraphrase a great man: I recognize that Facebook and Tumblr have made a decision. But given that it's a stupid-ass decision, I've elected to say fuck those guys
