Hawki:
Okay, I'm going to step in here.

I won't comment on the NES/SNES Mario games, because I haven't played them since around the time they came out, and apart from Super Mario 64, have never been invested in Mario in any form. But STH 1 is hardly a case of "rote memorization" - none of the Genesis Sonic games are. Memorization will certainly help you get through a stage, but it's not the be all and end all. If anything, STH 1 is the least rewarding of memorization because of its six zones, three don't allow any real speed at all (Marble, Labyrinth, Scrap Brain). When you're in these three zones, you're basically playing a traditional platformer. It's actually part of the reason why STH 1 is held below the subsequent Genesis games. But when it does encourage you to go faster, it's never without sufficient warning if your reflexes are fast enough.

There's certainly Sonic games that have put too much emphasis over speed in comparison to the platforming, but I never had a problem with the early Genesis games in this regard.

Thanks for the clarification on the IGN thing.

Yeah, in all likelihood I am conflating the first two games and my old-man-memory is playing tricks on me. The Genesis was something my friends owned and I could only play at their house. I don't remember how far I got in 1 (star light zone I think) and I know I got as far as the final boss in death egg zone in sonic 2 multiple times.

Hawki:

There's a statement in an IGN roundtable that "this [Sonic] was never a good series." It didn't go over well with a lot of people.

Thing is, I've actually seen this philosophy applied by others (including Yahtzee) least with the 3D games, namely:

Sonic Colours: "This is the first good 3D Sonic game." (forgetting about Adventure 1/2)

Sonic Generations: "This is the first good 3D Sonic game." (forgetting about Colours)

It was because of shit like this and among other problems, I started to take Yahtzee less serious. He just became another Internet contrarian. And there times where he clearly didn't do his research or did not back up his claims. IGN was always shit, even before the infamous God Hand review. Thank you, Hawki.

Hasn't he always been contrarian?

I use Yahtzee as an example, but I don't really begrudge him that. It's his duty to have as much fun at the expense of a game as possible. 90% of the game, he's making fun of a game I've got no investment in. 10% of the time that's different. Ergo, I can't really complain about him making fun of games I like when he's basically an equal opportunity provocatur.

Hey, remember when Gangsta's Paradise was a sincere reflection on the problems facing poor black men and the empty nihilism of living in a culture where the only visible path to success is through a life of crime and violence which not only perpetuates a cycle of community decay, but also ultimately claims the lives of those it seemingly empowers.

Boy, that was a long time ago, huh.

You know how basically everyone doesn't care much for Sonic's design in this movie? Jeff Fowler, who's making his directorial debut (and possibly funeral) with this movie, said they're going to change it.

Jeff Fowler on twitter:
Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be... #sonicmovie #gottafixfast

For bonus points, read the above in Jaleel White's Sonic voice for the saturday morning cartoon. Also, that hashtag. #gottafixfast.

I thought Amish Paradise was the serious one.

Most people who shit on Sonic games do so because they know they are supposed to shit on Sonic games to show how like everyone else they are, despite them likely not having played any Sonic game in a long time or even at all. At best they think the silly plots is enough justification. Sonic Forces was a genuinely great Sonic game with a really dumb plot.

I'd like to think this was some sort of 4D Chess marketing where they purposely used an awful Sonic model to get the movie to go viral before changing it back to the classic design, but I just can't see Hollywood being that smart.

Also I don't think a new Sonic model will be enough to save this movie. Everything looks so god damn bland. When I think of Sonic I think of other worldly places with insane colors and over the top robot designs. Instead we have the Redwoods being used as the Green Hill Zone, grey or black bargain bin robots that weren't good enough for a Transformer movie, San Francisco again, and Mushroom Hill Zone made up entirely of your standard portobello mushrooms. It all looks like it was shot on digital with flat lighting as well. And dear god don't look up the director or the duo that wrote the script. The only thing that remotely gives me interest is Jim Carrey's final shot of turning into full on Robotnik/Eggman. And I fucking hate Jim Carrey.

Man I wish I would have thrown my lot in Pokemon when I was a kid. I hear their movie isn't perfect, but it gives the fans exactly what they want instead of this dumpster fire.

I am just happy they are going to change Sonic's design. I have no idea why they would get as far as trailer with Sonic looking like that. Looks like the person who created that never played Sonic or watched anything related to Sonic in their life. Looks like a man in a furry onesie instead of the actual character.

Hopefully when they do release it Sonic will actually look like Sonic and not nightmare material.

I think someone clearly wanted to make Sonic look more "human", presumably thinking it would have more appeal to kiddies.

Well you should resist, and I really hope you don't believe this at all.

Hey, Pop Culture Grinch, how you doing?

Come off it, Gangsta's Paradise became an iconic, era-defining song even in its immediate aftermath, and as I recall despite being a deep statement if you're willing to read into it closely enough (and couldn't we say that for a lot of songs?) it mostly just came to epitomise the era, in the same way as, say, C U When U Get There or I'll Be Missing You. No need to act like Tears In Heaven just got used in a McDonald's advert. Not sure how serious you were being, to be honest.

Doesn't make him immune from criticism, regardless if he's making fun of a game or invested in or not. Yahtzee wasn't exactly always contrarian, but he had minor moments here and there. But as the years went on it got more obvious. His Mad World review being the start of it. His view on fighting games where regardless of quality, you can just win fighters "just by button mashing". Or where went off tangent of making fun of Star Wars fans in a mean-spirited, not fun, I'm better than you, because I don't like this franchise. When you make an article saying why the world does not need Star Wars unironically, with no sense of humor, you have a big problem. Like hell you know what's good for the world, and shit on people for like something popular. That article was just a glorified way of calling people mindless sheep. I know I stopped reading his Extra Punctuations after that.

He has some consistency, compared to other critics, but there are others that I find that get their point across better regardless of how their gimmicks works. I'll still watch some of his stuff from time to time, but I stopped relying on him for judgements or opinions back in 2011/2012.

Speaking Sonic films, a lot of fans are certainly favoring the fan film that came out in 2013. I remember at the time when some jackass fans were hating on it, because how Sonic looked. Oh, how opinions change.

You're both not wrong about GP. I mean the song is better than the damn movie. I was 6 years-old when that movie came out in theaters. EviltheCat's interpretation fits the bill. Read the lyrics.

Fixed that for you.

The only reason anyone likes Sonic Forces is because they finally got to play as their fursona. No one will convince me otherwise.

Is that your dream casting? I think John Goodman could pull off the look but I'm not so sure about the voice. Maybe Richard Kind?

Steven Seagal? They look about the same now.

Don't edit my posts like that.

If you want to be stubborn and wrong, that's your problem, don't twist my own words.

People who hate on Sonic games with all this effort need to get over themselves.

I don't like Fortnite, but I don't waste my time shitting on everyone who does.

Not even that decent of a fursona sim. At reveal, people were making better fursonas in other games just to get hype. The real thing is playing alongside the totally awesome Sanic and getting his very meh compliments.

I'm aware it was a hugely popular song. I'm also aware that the predominantly white audience who made it a popular song at the time of release did not pick up on the really obvious meaning of the verse lyrics and just focused on the catchy chorus (which, incidentally, is the only bit played in this trailer). This is not distinct from the point I was making.

Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Is an Inescapable Nightmare

That sounds pretty factual.

This. His design is worthy of being in Sonic Dreams Collection.

Sure, I remember most of that, when the song's name was Pastime Paradise.

Oh hey, glad to know I wasn't the only one to think of the comparison.

...why change his gloves to white fur if you were still going to leave his shoes as shoes?

Days after watching this trailer, I am still so disturbed by that image of Sonic that I cant get the image of his teeth and weird legs out of my head.

There is now porn of movie Sonic. Why am I surprised?

Well then, glad to see this for a change. Hoping the new version of Sonic does the little guy some justice.

The movie will probably make a lot of ironic money like Venom did.

Venom wasn't even that bad. It was a six out of ten for me. And from what I've seen, a lot of people in theater seem to enjoy it. I know the people in my theater did.

Well, fortunately someone has actually fixed Sonic's design. Now this is a movie I'd actually watch.

Interestingly enough, Reddit loves this ... and I don't mean for ironic / meme reasons. They legit adore the design and think it's great, simply because it made that horrific design of Sonic into something really cute, if not more.

Well apart from the lewd version(s) ... that's a different story in itself.

Well. Yes. It is an attractive design. But it's telling that the best anyone has done to Sonic recently was reinventing him as a slutty punk girl.
