Maleficent 2 Trailer

Well, the first trailer for the sequel to the 2014 Maleficent Disney movie is here. Looks great. Hope to see more of what the plot is about in future.

Are Maleficent and Aurora now a Lesbian Couple?

I liked how the first movie ended plenty enough, I'm not going to bother watching this one.

The first movie was its best in the first half before they got to the Sleeping Beauty Story proper.

I mean this was straight up Bretonnia vs Wood Elves from Warhammer.

...what is even the plot this time round? Haven't they covered pretty much all of their Sleeping Beauty story?

I quite enjoyed the first one, so I'll probably watch this once it reaches a streaming service - it's not a cinema jobby for me. (And don't do jobbies in cinemas.)

Well, visually it looks cool so far. Not much else I can say about it.

So this is the rock where Angelina's been hiding under all these years...

How did you get that from their one line between eachother?

...who was asking for this? Did the last one garner enough interest for a sequel? We really don't need another one...

I just thought they were ripping off Frozen with Maleficent and Aurora's relationship in the movie and would think they would go even far as to make them a lesbian couple.

But lets drop it here.

Wait I thought this movie was a flop?! They made another?

Yeah. Both frozen and maleficent both teach the "true love doesn't have to be romantic" lesson.

In frozen, Anna is cursed to turn to ice without an act of true love. She initially seeks out the prince she had fallen in love with at the beginning of the movie but it doesn't work when it turns out he was only using her. So the act of true love comes from a hug from her sister.

In maleficent, Aurora's cursed to sleep forever without true loves kiss. The fairy godmothers push the prince she had taken an interest in earlier in the movie to kiss her, but it doesn't work. The spell only breaks when Maleficent, who had raised her like a daughter and was essentially her godmother, and who had come to love her like a daughter, gave her a maternal kiss on the forehead. Thus true loves kiss. (Because she truly loves her like a daughter)

It's really not hard lessons to grasp

That's nice but then why does everybody go on about lesbianism in these movies if "love" ends up being a "we're family" thing?

It took me years to get around to seeing Maleficent mostly because I couldn't see them committing to her being pure evil. And they didn't- just giving her a 'woe is me, here's MY side of the story where I'm the hero' version. What a cop out. They should have played her evil to the hilt and still found empathy for her, the way mobster movies tend to do the best at. Imagine how ground breaking that could have been as a kids film- showing that even the worst people think can think they're doing the right thing.

Anyway- not really interested in a sequel to what they presented. The trailer music was the only good thing about it.

Same. I liked the first one and am looking forward to this one. I think Jolie was perfect for this role. Yea, I will likely find it somewhere online. I only go to the cinema these days if I am treating my elderly mother and she picks the movie.

Because people are emotionally stunted fucking morons who can't conceive of the word love being separated from the concept of lust

I already understood that Frozen's love was not romantic or lustful in the slightest. I fully get what they were going for.

But current internet movie gender role politics made me think of something else with Maleficent hence I thought the youtubers Geeks & Gamers are gonna think its a lesbian romance angle.

Your post gave me much needed enlightenment is dispelling all these illusions I had with the movie.

That's true, but it didn't have to be. Not every Disney movie is a princess story, and not every princess has to be 'the good one.'

Pretty much most of them? Remember empathy is separate from allegiance. You can understand a character's motivations without agreeing with them or their actions.

m?pa?thy
/ˈempəTH?/
noun
noun: empathy
the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

I have always understood empathy to mean to share the feelings of another. While understanding their motive, I would think to share those feelings, I would have to somewhat agree with them on some level. From what I have seen of Mobster movies, they think, feel and do the opposite of what I do, so I guess I pretty much view them as mindless Neanderthals for the most part rather than what I would call "empathizing " with them. Mobsters always came across to me as being dumbasses for the most part. They are ignorant, abusive, selfish, careless, gluttonous, jealous, vengeful, greedy.. all the worst in one package taking no care of their impact on the world. It makes it difficult for me to empathize with that mindset.

Those are the two main associations of empathy, but empathy can appear as one or the other without both.

I'll admit mobsters are an extreme case. But look at it this way- have you ever watched a crime film, let's say a heist film, where you feel like you fully understand the robbers' motivations for doing a robbery, even if you yourself would never rob a bank? How about a Darth Vader figure- fights for the wrong side, but you can understand how they ended up there? A supervillain who genuinely believes that a genocide might prevent something even worse from happening? If it's something you would never do yourself, yet you can honestly see clearly why that character behaves the way that they do, then you have empathy for that character, even if you don't agree with them. Edward Norton once put it quite well:

"I've always thought of acting as more of an exercise in empathy, which is not to be confused with sympathy. You're trying to get inside a certain emotional reality or motivational reality and try to figure out what that's about so you can represent it."

The actor doesn't just have to empathise with a character that may be totally unlike the actor themselves, but they have to do it in such a way that the audience will empathise with that character, too.

Geeks and Gamers? You mean the guy who made around 130 videos on the Captain Marvel "controversy?"

Let them stay on the fringe.

Shippers shipped Danny Phantom and Vlad Plasmius in Fanfiction as a gay couple....even though it makes even less sense then Maleficent and Aurora because they are arch enemies and Vlad is trying to get it on with Danny's Mom.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maleficent_(film)

Maleficent earned a gross of $241.4 million in the USA & Canada, and $517.1 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $758.5 million against a budget of $180 million. Calculating in all expenses, Deadline Hollywood estimated that the film made a profit of $190.77 million. Worldwide, in its opening weekend, the film earned $175.5 million, $9 million of which was from IMAX locations. It is also the biggest debut among films starring Angelina Jolie, and the actress' highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, as well as the fourth-highest-grossing 2014 film (behind Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and Guardians of the Galaxy), and the 15th Disney-distributed film to surpass the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office. The film is also one of four Walt Disney Studios releases in 2014 to gross over $500 million; the other titles being Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Big Hero 6.

Middling critical reception shouldn't be confused with box office reception.

Don't you know the #1 shipping rule? The more two characters hate/fight eachother, the more they actually want to bone.

...how the fuck did this turn into a shipping conversation?

I mean, if you want to discuss ships I'm all game, but apart from that...

Indeed. It also feels like a movie that had the throne room scene from the original animated movie shot as a proof of concept and then had the rest of the plot built around it.

Still, I liked it, and it worked as a rewriting of a classic that was far more interesting than the original (which, while iconic, is kind of uninspiring in retrospect, especially stacked up with the Sword in the Stone, Beauty and the Beast, and The Black Calderon).

Samtemdo8:
Are Maleficent and Aurora now a Lesbian Couple?

At the end of the original movie, it's a tad ambiguous. While there definitely are some gay undertones to their relationship, it could just as easily be interpreted as maternal or platonic love.

Assuming this is an actual sequel (and not, say, taking place in the middle of the previous movie), methinks something pissed her off, which, given that she's still probably a tad peeved about everything other than Aurora from the previous movie, is probably not exactly buried that deep, which has her likely go on a Karrigan-grade tear through the kingdom for revengeance.[1]

[1] I will forever believe that Revengence should have been the subtitle to Starcraft II-2 rather than that MSG spinoff.

Hence the sizable amount of Adora-Catra shipping in my Twitter feed...
