[Politics] The Gaming industry publicly asks to not be part of the Trade War

https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/2019/06/27/sony-microsoft-and-nintendo-unite-against-china-tariffs/

So Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are asking to the Administration for video game consoles to not be subject of the new tariffs.

Letter to the Representative: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=USTR-2019-0004-1869

Basically they say that the benefits for such tariffs aren't worth the damage they'll cause (hurt consumers, video game developers, retailers and console manufacturers; put thousands of U.S. jobs at risk; and stifle innovation within and outside the industry).

Imposing Tariffs on Video Game Consoles Would Not Be "Practicable or Effective to Obtain the Elimination" of China's Problematic IP Practices

Although we appreciate the Administration's goal of strengthening the protection of IP in China, video game consoles are not the focus of the Chinese practices targeted by this investigation. Video game consoles are not priorities in any Chinese industrial policies, e.g. Made in China 2025. Indeed, Chinese-developed and branded video game consoles are virtually non-existent; one video game console that launched in 2016 has not been well received by the market. Moreover, because margins are tight due to the nature of our business model (as explained above), incentives to steal IP to make counterfeit consoles are exceptionally weak. Video game consoles are also relatively complex types of equipment, so the amount of effort and cost required to manufacture infringing or illegitimate products would not be justified by potential returns.

We appreciate the Administration's consideration of this request that tariffs not be applied on HTSUS subheading 9504.50.00, covering video game consoles, and therefore that this subheading not be included in the final fourth list of products subject to Section 301 tariffs.

I expect all the tech industry is going to be affected by the new tariffs (and I don't think entertainment sector will be spared). American consumers are going to get less value for their money in the near future, and they better get used to it.

There have been numerous other industries already asking to be excluded from tariffs that were ignored so I am doubtful anyone will get special treatment here. The tariffs will last only as long as Trump does, so they can put an end to this mess easily if all those affected by this turn out in droves at the polls to vote him out of office.

Even if Trump is driven off the office, I think it's unlikely that the tariffs will go away. It's more of a gut feeling than anything, but still.

Trump doesn't care about videogames

His hands are too small for the controllers

Since most all economists have been outspoken against these tariffs, and most people running against him have as well, yes they will disappear when he does.

If people really want them to stop, they will vote trump out of office.

Trump tried to blame the Video Game industry for the Parkland School Shooter once he was told the NRA was off limits. I doubt he gives a flying fuck. Not to mention he doesn't care about far more pressing matters like Climate Change, War with Iran being a very bad idea and his administration essentially committing child abuse on the border.

I'm also fairly sure his knowledge of video games is something around "Pong is a thing" and "Murder Simulators", which is pretty much his knowledge of most things that don't directly benefit him.

And he's a moron who thinks that trade wars are good for the economy. He doesn't understand how any of that shit works and you can't explain it to him because he's literally too stupid to comprehend it. And even if he did he still wouldn't care because he doesn't give a shit about other people. Any of them. Including his loyal sheep...I mean supporters.

By the time he's gone people will already have accepted the tariffs as the norm and the slide will continue. Something else will be the issue of the day. Some other attack on the pockets of the common people will kick off and it will fail and the Dems will boast of their victory but never do anything to undo damage already done or it will succeed and the cycle will continue.

Yea, I don't think that is going to happen. The tariffs are devastating so many US businesses and they can only pass so many bailouts before people say when. People do not "just get used to" going out of business.

Granted, first we have to get rid of him and his enablers in congress. Sadly, that's going to be difficult because there's like 30-40% of the country that can't stand the idea of voting for a democrat, so will blithy accept any garbage they're fed because "A democrat would be worse".

Yeah, if you're at the point that you're calling Joe Biden types a socialist, you're beyond help

People can accept a lot as long as their side is winning. Look at the recent survey on brexit. A majority of supporters would still support it if it meant devastating their economy, Scotland and NI leaving the union and the only thing that would change their mind is Corbyn becoming Pm.

They can if they can blame someone else for it all. Everyone knew that Trump would be bad for the US, and yet US voters voted for him, because they liked repeating his lies.

And many gamers have supported Trump despite him showing apathy and downright hostility to their preferred medium. It's almost like he doesn't give a shit.

Like Bush's 2002 steel tariffs?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_United_States_steel_tariff

I don't know where your gut feeling is coming from, but my take is that government isn't perfect and the people that personally benefited from some of the tariffs could potentially politically ensure that they remain in place. Reality, however, shows that in modern times another president enacted tariffs that he had to remove, so facts points toward me being wrong.

The consequences of having bitches put a bitch-in-a-box stand in office. With that said, how many gamers voted for this guy?

Oh game industry, you silly goose. You won't get anything from Trump by asking nicely.

Considering Trump blamed them for a school shooting I'd say its safe to say Trump either hates the video game industry or doesn't understand it and responds to that being hating the video game industry. He's not going to listen to any request they make.
