Kids Shows Suck Today

Soviet Heavy:

Why do kids shows suck?

It's probably because your comparing the best shows from your childhood against some of the worst of today's. Here is an experiment to prove my point
step1: Find an old vhs tape of an okay movie.
step2: Watch the previews and count how many of the movies seem like complete shit.
step3: Repeat with current dvd movie.
step4: compare how many suck from each movie.

You'll probably notice that both contain similar levels of crap movies previewed on each.
Yes alot of kid shows suck today but like with our generation some of us found the gems hidden in the garbage, while others swam in the garbage. There are some good shows today like "Phineas and Ferb" "Avatar the last Airbender" and a couple more if you know where to look.

That might have something to do with the fact that you're not a kid any more and when you combine that with taking off your nostalgia glasses, stuff is going to be pretty lame.

I can still watch the older episodes of some of my favourite kids shows, and still be entertained by them. But when I watch the newer ones, they are terrible in comparison.

Yeah, because the old episodes fill you with nostalgia. The new ones are new and can not do so. Personally, I thought all those shows sucked, even when I was four. Maybe I played too much Doom 2.

TempestZ:
I remember Muppets. Oh god how much I loved Muppets. Cookie Monster FTW.

If you love the muppets, avoid their new movies. Seriously, the last good muppet movie was Muppets From Space. Now, there is the God Awful Muppets Wizard of Oz, Muppets Christmas Special, and Muppets: Letters to Santa.

Avoid them at all costs. Here's a warning. None of these three films feature Frank Oz. At all.

aruseusx:
My favourite Spongebob episode is the one when they try to sell chocolate.

Also a classic :D

I didn't watched the new shows and I don't intend too cause I have the same opinion as you. Still thanks for the warning.

Idk, Ed Edd 'n' Eddy, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo, Johnny Bravo, Rugrats, etc. I'd say we had it pretty good. Have you seen...idk...."Chowder" on these days?.....just....ew.

I hate those live action children shows today. Remeber Keenan and Kel??? That was a good show. Today you have that hanna montana, and those gay jonas brothers... T.V. is a disgrace today.

It's sad. When I was young, I watched Doug, Rugrats, Hey Arnold and show like that. Now any time I see anything on kids shows, it's really dumb. I feel bad for the kids, because they'll say they grew up on shows like Flapjack or Chowder or whatever.

But if you want a good kids movie, go see How to Train Your Dragon.

You can't tell me that I only like Ghostwriter, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, Tale Spin, Square One TV, and The Joy of Painting because I'm looking at them through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. These were GOOD SHOWS, and you can't find anything like them in the homogenized landscape of modern-day American TV.

Sadly, now that the American studio system is so bloated and inefficient, everything has to be committee-run, and aimed squarely at the lowest common denominator, to the exclusion of all other demographics.

Hey! Guess what? Kids shows have always sucked. Why? Because they're made for kids. If kids like them, who the hell are you to say they shouldn't because shows were better 'back in the day' when you would watch X-Men. As someone who was obsessed with feeling nostalgic for several years, I went back and watched pretty much every show I loved as a kid. And you know what? They were all fucking. Terrible. The 90s did not have really good cartoons just because you grew up then.

lwm3398:
You know what show is good? That Ben 10: Alien Force thing. It's not like an old cartoon, but it seems to try to have a plot. And am I the only one who thinks that new thing on Cartoon Network, Generator Rex, looks awesome? Adventure Time is another new thing coming out that looks good to me. Plus, it came from an animated short which was expanded, so it has to be well-animated and written. Indie stuff is awesome, is what I'm getting at.

Why kid's shows suck nowadays is because, well, why write these clever, funny shows when you can write something based off an LSD trip? Kids eat insanity up, so why give them anything else that takes actual work? Don't play an ace if a 2 will do.

Hey, remember when kids' shows referenced pop culture? You don't see that now. It's because kids today wouldn't get those jokes.

I dunno, something based off of an LSD trip certainly seems quite appealing compared to the shit they actually write.

Backyardigans, bitches.

First season was sort of crap, but brilliant from then on.

Doesn't treat kids like retards, doesn't try teaching them anything, just fun for the sake of it.

I do agree. Most shows nowadays suck. Though I do like Chowder and Flapjack, they are pretty funny. Man I miss older cartoons.
EDIT: Oh speaking of kids shows, anyone here remember Legends of the Hidden Temple? That was an awesome kid's game show.

oh my god........ YOU'RE RIGHT! oh dear god! Spongebob Arnold, rugrats! what have they done to you?

a few minutes ago i wanted to to see if this was true, i flipped on that teletoon channel (still don't know why i have it) and i saw some monstrosity of a show called Jonny Test. and i've realized, NONE OF THESE KIDS SHOW ARE THE LEAST BIT FUNNY! All i heard was "Woah, didn't see that coming" uttered like 16 times. God, WHAT HAPPENED TO FUNNY CARTOONS!!!!!!!!

(P.S i remember invader Zim. Now that, was laugh out loud Ha-ha-larious funny cartoons.)

Zim is on Teletoon Retro.

Ren and Stimpy

Ren and Stimpy has never been a kid's show. Ever.

I watched it as a kid! =D

But I do see why my gram would try to turn it off and make me watch something else. <.< Never worked though. Haha.

I think you're mostly just remembering the good shows. There were a lot of mediocre or terrible shows in the 90's, but everyone forgot about them as soon as they were gone. My Saturday morning cartoon watching career game to an abrupt halt when ReBoot was replaced by some ridiculous live action show about fluffy computer viruses that came to life.

There is one show I'll always watch no matter what, Pokemon. It's just never on and instead they play Johnny Test, ugh.

=O spongebob doesn't suck!!!

Chowder is one of those shows that isnt total shit but acceptable, Just like Flap Jack and Fineus and Ferb are acceptable.

You'd be surprised, take Animaniacs. I never watched it as a kid, I didn't even know about it, so there's no possibly way I could be nostalgic about it. When I watched it recently, I loved it, I absolutely loved it.

I think the reasons they were better in the old days were that they were aimed at adults as much as kids, and they weren't clearly being run by committee over what's 'acceptable' for the tykes.

Completely and utterly this.

Take another one, Courage the Cowardly Dog:

You could never, ever, EVER show this today.

The mixture of pedophilia/psychotic undertones today would make parents break out in a cold sweat.

Back in the 90's? They showed this shit all the time.

I loved that show. It was fucking funny. I think my favorite episode was the one where they were trapped in a giant vacuum cleaner or something. And there was something about an evil hamster, I think...

I forgot, what is Rugrats? All the other shows I remember (and I loved Ed Edd 'n' Eddy, it was the best show on CN)

I think it's part nostalgia, and part truth. I concur that the older cartoons were superior.

Ahh Courage. They should've kept it on. I remember back about 8-10 years you could get CDs of some of those cartoons straight out of a cereal box. Used to have 4 of em, but had to ditch em all. Definately classic cartoons by far.

All I know is that it ended with a jet-ski chase, if I'm not mistaken.

And that was good enough for my 9 year old mind. ;P

SnootyEnglishman:
Because we're not in the 90's anymore and we have to always 'think of the childrens'.

Ah yes, the ancient "appeal to emotion" fallacy. Rather than actual logic, you toy with people's emotions to win the argument. People pull the "think of the children" card all the fucking time even on issues that are com-fucking-pletely irrelevant to kids.

We need to consider the fact that the longer any kind of franchise runs, the more it will suck. Power Rangers, Sesame Street, The Simpsons and many other series proved that (though the precise turning point of great-to-shit is subjective). It's more or less like playing Poker. The more you gamble thinking you'll shovel in more money (in this case, authentic popularity and HONOR), you commit the Gambler's Fallacy and start losing.

Thus begins the incurable infection of what I love to call the "moneymilker virus". Your franchise starts to lose all remnants of a proud soul it once had from its original creators, the scripts start to get roboticized, and whether you're conscious about it or not you start throwing in inappropriate subliminal propaganda *cough*SpongeBob*cough*. Last but not least - all substantiality of the show diminishes and it degenerates into nothing but a profit-maker with no attention to quality or lack thereof.

Mr.Matress:
I agree, a majority of the shows today for Kids suck major. No wonder why children turn to adult cartoons. The only good Kid cartoons now and days are Flapjack, Spongebob, and Adventure Time (Which Looks okay), and Chowder in certain areas.

Flapjack sort of sucks, Spongebob needs to be axed soon as his cash cow is nearly dry, and you're forgetting Phineas and Ferb. That show kicks ass.

What are you talking about? Phineas and Ferb sucks major bum! It's the worst thing I've seen on Disney since Hanna Montana *shudders* It's too predictable: Kids invent machine, Sister tries to tell mom, Machine is destroyed before mom see's it and no one mentions the machine ever again and the sister is seen as crazy. It just sucks to me.

Hobo Joe:
I concur, boys' programs are nothing but overly macho cool-man 'Raarr I'm so badass' characters and girls' programs seem to give the impression that eight year olds should dress and act like they're seventeen year old whores. In short, I hate the disney channel.

You really should give Disney more credit, It should be...

...and act like they're seventeen year old whores, recovering from lobotomies

Ren and Stimpy has never been a kid's show. Ever.

I watched it when I was a kid. All the time. What's the worst they do? show something gross? say "don't pee on the electric fence"? it's not a bad show.

Actually a couple of weeks ago I actually saw courage being shown on cartoon network. I think it was on a friday night. I was flipping through the channels and was pleasently surprised and decided to watch it.

Ot I agree with everyone else here in that cartoons nowadays seem to simple and I cant get into them and cant find them funny.

Why fix what isn't broken? That formula works and allows for creative misadventures. It's better than freaking Spongebob, nowadays.

No, Ren and Stimpy was AWESOME! Though it was more a Teenager show then a child show. What really sucks is Ren and Stimpy's Adult PARTY! John Krikfalusi (However the heck you spell that) ruined his own show by doing that!

*Sad Nostalgia*

Why Fix what isn't broken? Oh, I dunno... Because that's not creative? That's as bad as any failed attempt to create something awesome. Plus, the music numbers are bad too.

It's probably nostalga, they were never amazing, they just amused your child's brain, you've grown out of them

Before I forget it - the only gem I found in this era's extremely gay (read: homogenized) pretentions at "TV entertainment" was Loonatics Unleashed.

To me, everything in life took a turn for the worst in 2003-2004. When companies started getting bought up by bigger ones and all the good toons stopped airing.
