Poll: Overrated and underrated

It is easy to belive that the overrated is good, simply because, many are talking or discussing about it. But whats overrated might sometimes recive a little too much attention and credits.
Sometimes, when movies and games are released at the same time, some get overshadowed by it's adversery, and it don't recive the attention it wanted.

But then comes the question: Is it easier to disslike or hate what's overrated?

Personally, I don't think so. It all depends on it content, what is dellivers and how you feel by playing, listening or reading it.

What I would like to know, what does the people think about this?

Also, it is nice if you want to make a list with one overrated and one underrated movie, game, song, band/singer/composer etc.

My personal pick on this, will be:

Overrated: Final Fantasy VII (7), Squaresoft, PSX.
The game is not bad, but it has recived more attention then I would like to call nessecearly. We have spin-off games and movies based on happenings before and after the game. The characters are not to interesting, and, if you ask me, could have more varriations.

Underrated: Final Fantasy IX (9), Squaresoft, PSX.
This game is a masterpice in the JRPG-genre. It has a complex story, good character development and has, ofcourse, awesome music and graphic. Why this game is overshadowed, is something worth finding out.

Every game that's come out of Valve has been incredibly overrated (I haven't played enough of Portal 2 to make a final judgement, though, so I'll leave that out).

For an underrated game I'd say KotOR 2. Yes, the ending was terrible, but the remainder of the game is far superior to KotOR. And with the restoration mods, it is even better.

Over rated movie: Titanic. Yea, it was alright. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it really wasn't anything too spectacular.

Under rated (and I've said this before, I know): Casino. Great movie. The reason it is often overlooked is because it has a glaring resemblance to GoodFellas. While GoodFellas is one of Scorsese's best, Casino is just as good, if not better in some aspects. Casino deserves to be ranked among Scorsese's classics, but instead is doomed to linger in the shadow of GoodFellas.

Although I don't follow the view myself, it seems that more people seem to hate over-rated games compared with under-rated ones.

For me the game I find most over-rated is Goldeneye for the N64. I mean, yeah sure I had a lot of fun playing it at the time, but other than nostalgia I can't see why it continues to be held in such high regard especially having played Nightfire which seemed to tick all the boxes in terms of advancement.

The most under-rated game would probably be Shadowrun... I mention it far too much on these forums but I havn't seen so much potential in a shooter since... Well ever. Sadly a lot of it was just potential and what was delivered was a narrow multiplayer experience with a deep level of play.

Anything which is overrated is, by definition, unworthy of the praise heaped upon it and thus easier to criticise.
It's a little sad that many pieces - be they music, film, novel, game, whatever - which are great examples of their medium get hyped beyond a supportable level.

As someone once said, "The remarkable thing about Shakespeare is that he really is very good - in spite of all the people who say he is very good."

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was under-rated but that's understandable. It is a Final Fantasy spin-off game which released around the same time (I think... definitely same platform as) Final Fantasy's II and III (IV & VI in Japan). Both of those being far more popular and better received.

It certainly is... but I don't agree with any of your poll options. Whether something is over-rated or under-rated won't actually change my opinion on it, but I will be more likely to be set on the issue if a lot of other people disagree with myself.

Well, I have always felt that the Metroid games and the 2D Legend of Zelda games were overrated. I also feel that Half Life 1, F.E.A.R., and Chrono Cross were overrated as well. There are probably others, but those are all the ones that come to mind at the moment.

As for games that are underrated? Well, Metal Gear Solid 2, Condemned 2, Silent Hill 3, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Bully all seemed underrated to me. Again, there are probably others, but those are the ones that immediately popped up in my mind ATM.

EDIT: Also, your poll is very confusing. You might want to make it more clear what the answers actually mean...

I never hate or dislike things because they're overrated. I hate or dislike them because I think they aren't good.

Anyone who hates something BECAUSE it's overrated is an idiot.

Take me for example: I think that Inception was obnoxiously overrated. I still liked it... I just state that I feel it's overrated.

Speak for yourself. The only overrated game they've made is L4D2 and that's only because of how similar it was to L4D1. If they had just released L4D2 it would have been as good as the first one. Of course you play RPGs so I don't think you'd enjoy VALVe's games simply because they're all first person shooters.

HL - Great for its time
HL2 - Great for its time
TF2 - Probably the best deal ever. Amazing game. Funny, good gameplay, voice acting, art direction etc.
L4D1 - Great game. Funny, good gameplay, good voice acting, etc.
L4D2 - Good game. Funny, good gameplay, good voice acting, underwhelming though.
Portal - Great game. Funny, good gameplay, a bit short.
Portal2 - Great game. Funny, good gameplay, good voice acting, etc.

Overrated: The Call of Duty franchise. I'd play them if I didn't have any alternatives, but they're nowhere near as good as their sale numbers suggest.

That's weird, I've heard a lot of hate for Chrono Cross (I've never played it), and almost nothing but love for Kingdom Hearts 2.

Anyway, I've always felt that most of Valve's game have been overrated. I've played them so I know they're not bad, but I don't think they really deserve all of their praise either.

As for an underrated game, I have to say KOTOR 2. Yeah the game had it's glitches and felt somewhat incomplete because of how much was cut, but I still loved the game to death and I feel like it deserves so much more than it got.

Overrated: Bioware. They're good, let there be no misunderstanding of that. But this site just holds it up a little too high, right beneath the golden pedestal it has reserved for everything by Valve...
Edit: *Sees two posts up* And there's that golden pedestal, trying to keep it high above any forms of opinion unfavorable to Valve...

Underrated: Platinum Games. Everything these guys have made is over the top, completely insane, and fun to play. Madworld, Bayonetta, Vanquish... a breath of fresh air every time. Sure, they're not "deep" like Bioware's works, but at least I know I'm going to have fun playing them...

...I am speaking for myself? I don't ever remember saying that my opinion reflected that of the entire community, so I fail to see your point.
I find them all to be way overrated. None of them are nearly as good as everyone says they are.

portal 2-over

Blasphemy! You dare spit in the face of Mr. Nolan?!

Kidding aside, I agree with you. I never find myself hating something because I consider it to be overrated or liking something that I think is underrated. I think what it boils down to is most people inability to differentiate between opinion and critique. Case in point. Years ago I thought Bioshock was a very overrated game, one that I had very little enjoyment in playing. However, I think it was one of the finest games developed in recent memory. It was weak in certain aspects but a shining example of how to make a great game.

Anyway, I suppose I should list my picks for over-and-underrated media, so as to not veer away from the original topic.

Overrated: Call of Duty, Halo, Mass Effect, Gears of War, 99.99% of all popular bands (any genre), The Social Network, Scott Pilgrim (movie), Community (along with most of the shows on today), Quentin Tarantino, Stephen King (to some extent).

Underrated: Fringe, Stargate: Universe, Blur, Tron: Legacy, Pandorum, Sins of a Solar Empire, Crysis, JXL, Prototype.

Those are just a few quick, more recent picks off the top of my head. If I thought about it, I could probably pick a bunch more. (some of them more prevalent)

The reason for this being a little confusing is that this is my first thread, and I was a little unsure about what to write to make it good.

But thanks for telling. Love to hear feedback on what I can do better :-)
