Thoughts on High School of the Dead?

Fan service with guns...Oh! there is zombies but the anime was made for boobs

It has stonking great titties, zombies, people killing zombies and enough fanservice to make the entirety of Japan simultaneously ejaculate. What's not to love?

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I hate how so many anime shows try to ham-handedly mix humour and drama. That almost never works.

This show is everything I hate about anime. I can almost understand bland, stupid fun as a selling point to something, but this... this shouldn't count.

I loved the grotesquery of mixing serious themes and graphic violence with really creepy fanservice (like the closeup of a zombie victims panties). To me, it's what sets this show apart from other zombie stories. I've only seen the first few episodes, though. And it was a guilty, guilty pleasure.

Marik2:
Like this scene is hilarious XD

LOL. I definitely have to get back to watching that show!

I enjoyed it, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't low class. Also, weren't there only like twelve episodes?

I love it. You just have to accept it for what it is:

An anime for and older audience filled with fanservice, gore, and zombies. It's awesome to watch and I've loved it since the beginning.

It's all about unnecessary panty shots and absurd gore and violence, but damn it's a addicting. It's a fun anime, but don't expect any substance here.

I enjoyed the anime. :) Mostly because I love practically anything dealing with zombies. xD

Marik2:
Well I liked how an anime took on the whole zombie route (I think this is the first anime/series that had zombies as a focusing point, but Im sure Im wrong on that)

I sorta liked it for some of the ethical dilemmas the characters got into, but then they just went crazy with the fanservice and I just stopped caring about the "plot" and started to watch it for the lulz.

Like this scene is hilarious XD

THATS NOT HOW BREASTS WORK GODDAMNIT!

But in all seriousness i kinda liked it, although the snail pace of the story and the gratitious fanservice make it really hard to take seriously.
I stopped watching it because i found better, less annoying anime

That is the funniest thing I've seen in ages.

Does anyone know if they're making a second season of it?

Because it ended on a pretty huge cliffhanger if not. Like someone else said, nothing really got resolved. That's what bothered me the most. Yeah, there was a lot of fanservice, but I didn't go in to it thinking it was going to be deep or serious in the first place.

Is "Boobies" a thought?
All kidding aside I love the show, it takes fanservice to a level that qualifies as deconstructive parody since it's so over-the-top.
Even the dub was great.

I both love that line and hate myself for loving that line.

believer258:

Honestly, the only thing you need to watch is this:

Marik2:

and you're golden for the whole show and some really good laughs.

sad to say, but that was honestly the vibe i got from watching the clip 'this is it, all there is to it' :/
ikkitousen was fan service to, HATED it

Probably the most fanservice-y show int he past decade.

The director is quoted saying that he wanted to make something that he would like if he was a high school boy again.

He succeeded immensely.

Beyond the fanservice, though, there isn't much.

Yeah they are but they havent announced a date for it.

And yeah they basically pulled of a MW2

It's an alright show. It has a good plot, some of the action was fun, and the characters were okay. Yeah, it has a lot of fanservice, but it's an Ecchi anime, and one of the better ones at that, and honestly, I've seen worse. Far, far worse.

My only disappointment was the violence. For a show featuring zombies, it seems rather tame.

i LOVE the idea that the gun nerd/otaku is the teams no.1 in kills next to the crazy kendo chick .

in basic i enjoy the idea that the two people that are farthest from socially normal are the ones that are kicking the most ass

also i seem to recall that the director or whatever started off in hentai

Oh god. People taking this show seriously again.

Look guys, it's MEANT to be a 'COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF FANSERVICE DOHOHO'-type show. It's almost bordering on comedy, don't take it seriously.

I barely remember the show but, yeah, that.

Twelve or thirteen episodes is the most common number, isn't it? Then the 22-26 set, then long-runners and then odd numbers like 50 or whatever... maybe I just watch alot of short animes, I duno.

smearyllama:
So far I've only seen a couple episodes of the show, so if I've just haven't gotten to the point where the exposition is over and the plot actually starts moving, please tell me.

From what I've seen so far, though, the show is kind of meh.
It's got great animation, and the voice acting is alright (I'm watching the dub), but the characters just feel a little cliched.
There's also the slightly creepy amounts of fanservice. Early on, while the characters are still dealing with the shock of, you know, zombies, we're getting a whole lot of panty shots and such. It just seems like a little much for early on in a show that looks like it's trying to be serious.

I might be wrong, and I might just not have seen enough of the show, but are these indicators of a bad series?
I'd like to hear your thoughts.

It's not trying to be serious, get that thought out of your head right now. it's a straight up comedy. I loved it. It mocks itself, nerd culture, and anime cliches to great effect. It is a little creepy in the first couple episodes, but I loved it overall. Once I stopped trying to take it seriously it became hilarious.

The fan-service was what turned me away from HSOTD. I lost count of how often such shots came up in the first episode alone, and then again in episode 2.

However, once you get about four episodes in, the story does take off, but remember, the series is only 13 episodes long.

A lot of these characters have lost their minds during this outbreak, but at the same time, some of these people are quite interesting, despite being such creepy psychopaths. Despite that, I don't like this series at all. It plays too much like a B-grade slasher/zombie film even with some good moments, and with way too much fan-service to make me believe otherwise, because that's what bad horror movies do.

They throw a lot of breasts at you, and a lot of gore, topped off with often very bad effects, then sit back and hope you like it. See The Howling 5, 6, and 7 for good examples, lacking the nudity, thankfully. (Still can't believe I sat through those films. Ugh.)

Dude, the series stars Kouta Hirano. If the guy who wrote Hellsing is in it, with zombie killing might i add, you know it's gonna be good!

HOTD Is all around awesome show.

I just leave this here:

I liked it until the beach episode that every anime ever just has to have. If you didn't watch the intro, just the episode, you can go 20 minutes in without remembering that it was about a zombie apocalypse.

Characters are chliched, as you said, but it's entertaining anyway. Quite a bit of fanservice, although I thought the boob-time portion was more funny than anything.

In my opinion; funny, worth watching, unless you specifically don't like boobs. Or hate harem animes (this isn't quite harem, but it's toeing the line.)

All valid statements. I was impressed that the nerdy guy was a gun enthusiast, though. Normally he'd be the one that, I dunno, hacks computers and whatnot, but it was a refreshing change of pace.

You know that expression "Trying to have your cake and eat it"? Never has there been a better example than this.

The creator is trying to do two things at once that not only shouldn't be done at the same time, but rarely ever can be done at the same time. There's a reason why you rarely ever seen works that have a massive emphasis on gore and an equally massive emphasis on fanservice. And, quite simply, it's because there are things that people like that they don't want to have overlap. You might like zombie movies, and you might also like porn, but do you want the two together? And I don't mean a zombie porno with hilarious production values that ends up just being two people shagging while wearing pale makeup: I mean a realistic, gruesome, and disgusting zombie movie.

Sure, the girls might be hot (or the guys, depending on the viewer), but can you appreciate that when half of them are screaming in agony as they get their ribcages ripped open? Hopefully no. And if yes, then congratulations: you're a part of a very, very select group that even /d/ doesn't allow in their club.

The sorta-ranting aside, there are some legitimate ways that the contrast of tone does detract from the story. For one thing, it degrades both aspects: a comic based largely on fanservice that dedicates half its time to graphic depictions of cannibalism will never be as good at fanservice as a comic that doesn't include the aforementioned cannibalism. Similarly, a zombie apocalypse story loses weight when the female characters have a group-bath scene or something.

Imagine a really funny joke. Like, the funniest joke you can imagine. It doesn't matter if it's funny to other people, just as long as you find it funny. Now imagine that joke, except also imagine that your family has just suffered a tragic and sudden loss. The joke hasn't changed at all, but the context of it has changed, and what was once funny has become crass.

Whew. Sorry 'bout the length. I guess it comes down to a failure of balance: if you want a violent zombie story and a fanservice series, there's a balance you need between the two, and that balance is not the 50/50 that Highschool of the Dead has.

...oh, and I was really offput by the girls' chest sizes. They're supposed to be in highschool, for one, and they're supposed to be Japanese. I know the writer wants them to be well-endowed, and I can live with what might be 'unrealistic' sizes, but Jesus Christ, show some restraint. After a certain point, it just gets downright creepy.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It has some interesting concepts and characters. It hasn't even made an attempt to explain the zombies. It's basically just a Zombie Apocalypse on steroids.

Hey, it even triggered an emotional response from me once. It introduced a new character, a fairly inept police officer, that I actually quite liked. She ends up falling for Kohta. And then she was killed. By Kohta. Yeah, I was mad. Yes, mad. It was completely an intentional attempt to play at our heart strings and it worked.

As for the fanservice, I kinda enj-Oh my God. I'm going to Hell, aren't I?

Marik2:

(snip)

Oh yeah, that's totally gonna get him in her pants later. I'm sure she appreciates the gun going off right next to her ear and jangling her tits around like that.

I like the little reference to zombie movies like Shaun from Shaun of the dead being a convenience clerk.

Started off as a fun anime to watch for all the reasons mentioned aboved, but the second half of the show bored me to death for its lack of zombie and an attempt at serious storytelling. Oh and that samurai babe with the hadaka (or w/e the spelling) appron is insta-win. That is all.

It's definitely ecchi. Entertaining enough, though.

I love how everyone says there's too much sex/boobs despite the fact the show was made to showcase zombies and BOOBS. It's like complaining about too many zombies, you can't because that's half the point of the show.

I read the manga and I loved it. While the fan service is a bit over the top, after a while the characters become as full and rich as their bodies.

honestly the series would be good even without all the tities.

The anime pretends to be no more than it is, and I certainly appreciate that
The fan service is for the most part done for comedy... so that's ok
and besides, in the world of anime fan service is not something to be getting upset with

Hell yeah

Shes one of the reasons why I sticked to the series, and cuz sadistic girls are pretty fucking badass.

Plenty of fanservice and a waste of some great voice acting talent. It wasn't bad, but I thought it would be better than it was. Still, there were a few times I laughed pretty hard, so it's all good.
