Poll: That old dillema! Blind or Deaf?

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT

I am already hard of hearing and its not out of the question that I could go deaf in my lifetime.
So deaf.

I will be learning to sign soon anyway, partly because thats what I want to do (work with deaf kids) and partly because just in case.

I love music and everything, but I simply wouldn't be able to live without sight.

Considering I already know how to read, write and speak, becoming deaf wouldn't have as huge an impact on me as suddenly losing my sight. Looks like the majority of the people in this thread agree with me, too.

I imagine I would be effected both either badly but being deaf seems to be the lesser of two evils.

Deaf. And then remedy that with a cochlear implant.

Dilemma solved!

blind. i love hearing. sounds reach out to me more so than sight. while i love reading and certain tasks that may require my eyes, i love music too much more to be able to lose that. besides, if i'm blind i can be like Dare Devil! or Cortez from the leet world. Cortez is a lot more badass anyway.

I can still do my job deaf. I can still watch movies deaf. I can watch porn deaf. I can see naked women deaf. So deaf. A millions times deaf.

Deaf, hands down. I still feel vibrations, and my eyes are much to precious to me. I love video games, without my eyes... I don't want to know what I would do.

Besides, the technology is already laid out to fix hearing, eyesight... not so much.

deaf, because i could always just learn to read lips or hang out with people who can sign.

Reading Lips is actually pretty hard, especially when you have nothing aural to back it up.

Its difficult...but that doesn't mean he couldn't handle it. Its much easier than braille.

EDIT: As for me, I would rather be deaf than blind. I couldn't live with the curiosity of what everything around me looks like. I would have an easier time moving around than blind people, and of course daily activities as well.

Damn I can't make a valid decision on either one of the two (and I'm not just saying that because I don't want to be either of the two). Being blind would probably be the greater evil, especially since if I were to lose my sight, I could not longer enjoy many things, like video games, movies, books, writing, etc. I feel like I can continue living if I were merely deaf, but then again, the phrase "No music, no life" comes to mind. I truly love music, especially since I enjoy all forms of it. Some of my greatest memories in my life included a few of my favorite songs being played in the background and I don't know how memorable they would have been if they were not present.

So yeah, I can't decide for the life of me, so if I go blind, at least I can enjoy all my favorite tracks of all time, and if I go deaf, I least I have video games and the likes to keep me entertained.

Order of senses I would lose, from ones I would care about least, to ones I would care about most:

Smell
Taste
Hearing
Touch
Sight

That's not a dilemma at all. We use sight WAY more then we use hearing.

Deaf. Definitely deaf.

What the hell kind of idiot perfectly reasonable individual would choose blind?

Deaf, I can cough up a few thousand bucks in the future and get a cochlear implant, I've heard that unless the deafness is related to brain damage the implants are quite likely to restore hearing.

Blind, I love music way too much.

First off, I wanna make everyone aware of the movie See No Evil, Hear No Evil http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098282/. Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, great watch.
I choose blind but would want a deaf buddy as in the movie.

I would rather be deaf, because you can still read and participate in society when you are deaf. But don't think of it too lightly; Deaf means you will never be able to listen to music again, and never have that much fun at festivals and concert!

What the hell do you think Braille is numb-nuts? Blind people can read too. Also, Deaf people have a difficult speaking because they cant even hear themselves. Even if you went deaf midway through your life, youll wind up making spluttering noises or shouting because you cannot determine how you yourself are making noises. Deaf people tend to be mutes because trying to speak is too damn difficult. Thats why the term "deaf-mute" comes from. You cant even hold a conversation unless BOTH you and the other person know sign-language. How do you expect to participate in society when deaf people have a MUCH harder time communicating with everyone else than blind people?

I would rather be blind. Sure you lose sight, but blind people have been recorded to develop sonar...SONAR. Deaf people can see their environment sure, but that doesnt mean they're still aware of their surroundings. People can sneak up on you, you cant hear people shout warnings, etc. You still miss a large amount of everything that goes on.

Blind people can make up for that by increasing their hearing. Even separating noises from others and detecting even subtle sounds everyone else cant pick out.

Wow, 85% went for deaf (me included)

For me deaf is the better choice, since you can still talk (maybe through gestures) and sound isn't that big a deal compared to my vision for me.

But you should try posting this on a website dedicated to music instead of games and see what results you get there, I bet exactly the other way around;)

Deaf. I went deaf once before when I was pretty young so I know what to expect.

eyes account for way too much, while human hearing isn't even that good to begin with.

if i could hear shit from miles away, maybe consider being blind, but deaf wouldn't bother me one bit, plus i'd still feel/hear vibrations basically, so if something catastrophic was coming or sorts, i would still feel it.

Deaf. I couldn't deal with losing my sight.

Also, even deaf people can listen to music. You can directly stimulate the ear drums and apparently it's close (so I'm told)

And it would mean that I didn't have to listen to anything I didn't want to.

Both would be horrible. Especially since I got ticket for Rise Against this March, but being unable to see would ruin my life.
I would not be able to graduate because I couldn't read my books and really... reading 400 pages in a week in braille seems like a hassle. I would not be able to use the internet, nor read papers, enjoy video games, movies or books. Without music I would feel kinda lost, but without sight I doubt I could survive.

be careful on that..there are a few VERY VERY rage filled pro blind people in here. case in point between our posts.

Blind people have a better chance of engaging fully, as strange as that sounds, and they have a chance at being cured as well in time, or at least having optical implants, but the hearing thing is a bit different, requires a lot more networking and reworking to fix.

The poles they carry are being replaced by laser systems as well and so it's less obtrusive. But, even though I like sound, visuals have been my life and I wouldn't be able to stand being blind.

Actually you get the book translated in speech usually, there's a few gadgets that they have. Ever seen the computer they carry around without a screen? It's ridiculous.

Deaf. As much as I would love a guide dog.

I already use the subtitle option in games.

I think its gotta be Deaf considering I could still do things like take a walk, admire the scenery, Play people watch (Hehehe).

Besides you could always plead to the government to make sign language lessons compulsory. then it wouldnt matter being deaf :D

Find a place where I can buy the entire Wheel of Time series in braille, find a place where I can buy all my text books in braille, find movies that I can enjoy without seeing anything find a game that can be enjoyed without seeing anything.
Being deaf is no joke, but being blind would mean I would have to learn to do everything I do now in a different way. I know how to read, but reading braille really can't be compared to reading normal letters. I can read it if I see the dots, but not by using my finger. My favourite activities require eyesight though being able to hear enhances them it's not essential.

I know there is a huge deaf community in the world, but I think being blind would have a much greater effect on my social life than being deaf would.
I wouldn't be able to read anymore (even IF I would learn Braille, still I would only be able to read books that were translated into Braille) And what about this forum or Internet itself! Also, I'm a big movie fan, and I wouldn't want to give that up. (I'm an even bigger music fan, but therein lies the dillema for me personally)

The fact that I was the one who first USED the word braille in this topic makes it's safe to say I know what braille is.

Deaf no question.

Think about it from a gamer's point of view. You can play just about any game on mute, but you can't play most games on blind.

Not that people haven't tried and succeeded.

Deaf. At least I'll have some silence. Gonna suck not being able to listen to music but I still got porn and video games so fuck music.

Deaf, partially because I read a book about a boy who went blind, and then commited suicide because he couldn't handle it.

While both have their downsides, If I had to choose, I would pick to be deaf.

Not being able to see would hamper me much more than not being able to hear, but I could still do my job, I could still enjoy gaming, and a lot of other things.

Though having to rely on reading lips, subtitles and learning sign language doesn't appeal to me either. :/

Deaf, at least i could still play Video games, which is my only hobby, plus i like Jrpgs, so a lot of reading going on there ( yes i still put subtitles). Although theres probably a few games with voices and no subtitles, can't remember any names, but i know theres some. Anwyays, I rather be deaf than blind for that reason.Plus i could still walk around without any problem, and people couldn't tell i'm deaf just by looking at me, and i hate music ( all kind of music i absolutley hate it ).

I'm torn, I love music too much to give up my hearing. But almost none of my hobbies are possible without sight.

I guess I'd rather be deaf the. "looking" for new music would be a challenge if blind.

If I was Blind I would need help if I needed to go anywhere. If I was deaf I could still get around without assistance.

I would rather be deaf no question.

Also Being blind means no internet and no video games.

Dead, easy. Just crossing the street is scary as hell if you're blind. Being deaf would suck, but it's 10x better than being blind.

deaf and it's not close. anyone who says otherwise hasn't thought this through well enough, no matter how much they like music or whatever.

being blind is crippling. being deaf is inconvenient.
