Hey 4chan? Can we talk briefly?

If I take a screenshot every time some snot-nosed punk makes an empty threat on 4chan and forward it to Gawker Media, do you suppose they'll pay me for it? Oh wait, they only want the threats aimed at famous rich people? Bummer.

Would anyone actually care if 4chan eats itself at this point? It was never supposed to grow to this size. Now it's collapsing under its own weight and the mods have no idea how to deal with it.

Many from 4chan would have no problem if the viewer count plummeted. Lot of people blame 4chan getting popular from chanology being a reason for a cause of decline (cancer) and 4chan becoming less popular and more niche again would benefit the old guard.

Some kind of strawman post about how you're better then a website who's claim to fame is a collaboration of its loudest mouths most satirical/asinine posts?

Well that's all the time I have. I must continue worshiping Ebola-chan.

Wait, you expected some actual discussion value at 4chan? Bloody 4chan? What?

I mean, I like the site in the way that you like a dam. It's not going to make for any good conversation, but hey, at least it keeps the bullshit all isolated somewhere far away from me. I'm not sure why anyone would go there for actual discussion, especially if they can't really stand trolling or shitposting.

Well, there seem to be a few Escapist fans over there: http://i.4cdn.org/pol/1411509182528.jpg

Either you're new to 4chan or you don't know really much about the culture there.
While each board thinks that /b/ and /pol/ are the cancer, they are tolerated by all boards exactly because of the bad reputation it gives the site. They don't want new, thin skinned people to come to the site. /b/ was basically a double filter. It would filter out all the thin skinned people in the first place by making them not come. The second filter is that it would keep the morons in /b/ and only those who realized 4chan is more than /b/ will leave /b/ as a better human and enjoy the rest of the site.

The hostility towards "newfags" was there to force them to "lurk moar", to learn the board culture (each board has its own culture, it's different and you should never go from one board to another and start posting without lurking for a bit to learn the ropes), to either accept it or to get the fuck out because they aren't welcome. The hostility is a filter to anyone unwelcome, the reward is getting some great time on the site when you learned how to differentiate the shit topics from the real topics.

At least that's how it was back in the days when 4chan wasn't shit and people /v/ did't go out of its way to invite more and more people who don't know anything about the posting culture. Now it's just a mess.
While not all the bad reputation can be said is intentional, a big part of it is or was. I don't know anymore, I just know that /v/ isn't even close to what it was, especially lately with the huge influx of new blood that doesn't understand anything yet want to change everything. For fucks sake, they are getting offended by being called the F word. That's the first indicator of how new they are and that they should lurk moar or leave. But because of the huge influx of new blood, they are really loud and there aren't enough "oldfags" to harass them until they comply and learn the ropes. But the downhill spiral started even before that so I can't really blame the new folks.

4chan is no longer affiliated with GamerGate after the banning of the discussion a week ago.

Nice joke though.

Everyone's talking about jumping ship to 8chan.co

It's a lot like the first schism where a bunch of people fled to 7chan, except they're not pedos defending their right to post illegal jailbait and loli images this time.

By everyone I mean the guys who frequent /pol/, /b/, and /v/. Most of the other boards are pretty much unaffected.

As an /a/ resident, I've also jumped ship after recieving a total of 13 days of bans over the past 14 days for posting stuff that the new mods just decided they didn't like. Like a picture with sideboob on /a/. An anime drawing of a video game character got me banned on /vg/ for not pertaining to video games. And I got banned for 7 days on /v/ for posting in a GG thread.

4chan is no longer the place it once was. It's got new mods that ban completely arbitrarily and randomly and moot is a slave to an army of lawyers now.

BiscuitTrouser:

Unless the entire thread was total and awesome satire then its obviously a place for every stereotype for MRA's ever by the looks of it. I read through like 100 short comments ALL of them to this effect. All.

It is most of the time, they pick up the usual nitpick and go up to eleven with the joke. Like Bioware recently includes a lot of homosexual content (it was even made fun of in Dragon Age 2 where you couldnt be nice to anyone or in the next cutscene you would be having sex with that person, a lot of people probably werent planing on having same sex relations in that game but they happened anyway) so they put that joke up to eleve. Add to the fact that every character in Dragon Age Inquisition is trying to look ugly and you have the mix for exageration to take a jokingly stab at the turbo feminist tumblr crowd. In the end its exageration on purpose to get the rise out of people, sometimes even simply baiting with some foundations to end up with a successful bait.

You end up getting used to it and very easily spotting the joke comment and the serious comment.

I've seen just as much intelligent and insightful conversation on 4chan as I have on any other site over the years. I'd tell you to look for yourself, but frankly the site has become a shell of its former self in the past month.

chadachada123:
I may be uninformed...but why exactly should anyone give a single fuck about nude celebrity photos?

a violation of privacy for one

They were illegally obtained. That's it. Now that they're on the internet, they're fair game, but why is anyone making a big deal of it?

they are "fair game" in the same way that somones bike sitting there without a bikelock is "fair game" its so easy to take it but that doesn't make it ok

"Hurr sexism" is hardly an argument

of coarse it isn't...it isn't even a coherent sentence

when nudes of male actors would be met with all sorts of hypocrisy. Don't try to deny for a second that many, many adult women would love to see nude pictures of Ryan Renalds, etc; illegally obtained or not.

wich proves...what exactly?

1. it hasn't happened

2. it would ALSO be an invasion of privacy (and not ok)

3. don't pretend all this happens in a post-sexist vacumn...it doesn't

That's the part I don't understand.

Once a photo is shared, it's fair game, in the sense that it's impossible to police. It's the same with any nude photos, of which there are tens of thousands all over various sites. To compare it to a bike, physical property, is obviously incompatible.

The part I don't understand is that this WAS the line of thinking when Hilten's video was leaked, or Vanessa Hudgens.

Is it the fact that the former were hacked while the latter were presumably released by the ex? I could understand the logical/legal difference, but I'd disagree that it should be given any fucks just because *a famous person's* privacy was violated and the evidence spread.

I just don't get the "big deal" part. Privacy was invaded. Big whoop. Some member of 4chan threatens to do it further. Big whoop. Sucks for the parties involved, but its spread over the internet is not a big deal.

chadachada123:

and my point still stands, just because nobody will stop you from doing something doesn't make it ok you could argue that merely looking at them isn't "as bad" as sharing because the former doesn't "contribute" to it or that the "blame" capacity acts like a pyramid (guy who "hacked" them and shared at the top) but its still not righto view naked photos of someone if you know that was not their intention

It's the same with any nude photos, of which there are tens of thousands all over various sites.

a lot of those nude images are probably consensual, we know for a fact the celebrity ones are not

Is it the fact that the former were hacked while the latter were presumably released by the ex? I could understand the logical/legal difference,

I never said there was one, though being released by an ex seems almost worse to me since its such a petty malicious thing to do

but I'd disagree that it should be given any fucks just because *a famous person's* privacy was violated and the evidence spread.

maybe it hurts people? maybe its humiliating? maybe they feel violated? maybe it can seriously harm their reputation?

4Chan is not something that anyone should take seriously regarding anything. Those that do clearly have no idea what they are talking about. It puts you on par with the CNN guy who thought 4Chan was a person.

I admit those, but I just don't see at as much more than tripping during the graduation ceremony. Really embarrassing/humiliating for the time being, but inconsequential in the long run (since essentially everyone their age does it to begin with, and because of the number of people involved). The reputation part, too, since this is after the Vanessa Hudgins incident. I don't get why we haven't gotten to the "it's embarrassing to be leaked but normal in private" stage despite it being exactly that.

It could mostly be that I just don't care about an issue like this, given that I'm pretty sure one or several pictures of my dick are spread around the internet because of a certain jilted ex. But..I simply don't give a heck, even if my name ended up attached (so long as my size is deemed sufficient).

Tripping during a ceremony is something you do yourself.

If you were to be tripped by someone on purpose, and the media went round blaming you for not stopping them doing that, and how you are setting a terrible example to kids, then it might be more comparable.

... 4chan is crashing and burning by having the same amount of traffic as they did a year ago? Really gotta let that chart go for a couple more months for any conclusions to be reached from it.

BiH-Kira:

I left shortly after the whole BOXXY wars debacle, with many others who hung there from starters. And, back then, nobody really cared at all about /b/, much less /pol/. Also many of /k/ommandos and /p/ros were /b/tards too.

P.S. I didn't speak of cultures of different boards. I never even lurked many boards. As I said, /k/ and /p/ were my mains with occasional hot to several others.

If it was satire theres obviously a level in the community im just not used to, because it was played DAMN straight, like some comments were obviously light hearted but the general idea that a game with lesbians in it is a SJW game by default was played straight as an arrow. Maybe theres some nuance though, perhaps youre right. It just didnt read like satire, and tbh im not sure i want to wade through potentially terrible and childish discussions to understand it but thats my prerogative.

It just read like a load of horny teenagers denied a porn mag. Maybe i projected my expectations onto the text :P

If you were to be tripped by someone on purpose, and [b]the media went round blaming you for not stopping them doing that, and how you are setting a terrible example to kids,[b] then it might be more comparable.

Who, except for a couple of pundits and stupid soccer moms, would say that? Who the hell would blame them, nor say they're setting a bad example?

THOSE are the types that are immoral, not anyone spreading them around the internet. (The person that started it is obviously an illegal dick, but everyone else is nothing compared to Hollywood, tabloids, and soccer moms).

So, yeah, caring about what Hollywood media says is pretty silly. Just tell them to politely fuck off. Problem solved.

Your analogy is right about the media being retarded for putting false blame, but your peers (fellow graduates) wouldn't be judging you for it, nor thinking it was your fault yada yada. They'd think it funny at first then be pissed at the one who tripped you if it became more than "heh, she got tripped."

Was it...Vanessa Hudgens or something who had to come out and apologise to her fans that someone leaked naked pics of her? And her career took a nasty knock, IIRC.

Sure, people really shouldn't judge, but they do, and in great numbers. Hell, remember when Kristen Stewart had an affair with someone that wasn't RPatt and there was a massive backlash against her?

Oh fantastic! Turns out the whole thing was a hoax by a scummy, slimy "PR firm", who are a cover for a group of professional trolls.

You know what, if the internet wasn't integral to my job, I'd just live in a flipping cave.

Fair point for the first; I believe you're correct there.

The second one, though? She deserves mocking and the like, as do any adulterers. In my opinion. But that's an entirely different subject.

I guess I'll revise my thoughts on the subject: HOPEFULLY these actresses won't have their careers damaged, and if they do, it's almost entirely because of soccer moms and Hollywood, not the spread of them on the internet (per the OP). And, of course, the fault of the hacker himself, who may or may not be using 4chan as a cover.

Well...without them being spread on the net, we'd not have the issue.

Eh, hit quote not edit. First time I've done that.

...

Now, back when there was lots of double posting, I'd mention H2O: Just add water, but now I guess the spinoff Mako Mermaids is more relevant. And Lucy Fry from that went on to be in the, IMHO, unfairly maligned Vampire Academy movie.

US vampire stuff, taking Australian mermaids and making them put on bad British accents

Yeah, 8chan's /pol/ broke that story themselves after a lot of investigation and passed it on to any news agency they thought would cover it. Not that it was hard to figure out after that site started redirecting to that whole "#ShutDown4chan" page. They even made an infograph with evidence:

Regardless, it's fucking ON, now. Everyone, including you, OP, was so willing to believe that 4chan are a bunch of scumbags that you'll believe any clever hoax without evidence just because somebody slaps "we r leejun" on it, claiming to be from there. But you know what - we can take it. Because we're the hero the internet deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So they'll hunt us; but they'll never pin us down. We're more than a site, now. We're a goddamn ethnicity, and we refuse to be genocided. Home is where the heart is, guys. Keep your chin up and fight back.

I'm rather hoping so myself, but it's really hard to tell sometimes.

I dont go into 4chan a lot, but I don't understand why people care so much that somewhere in the internet someone is saying things thay don't agree with and maybe *gasp* expressing those views in non-approved ways. Why the interest in moderating the whole world? It gets boring sometimes.

Whilst I may not be too interested in the content that gets posted on 4chan.

I simply have to respect that it exists.

Whoever, recent events do disappoint me.

4chan is supposed to be a place in which anyone can say anything without any concerns of right or wrong. It's supposed to be free speech to the nth degree.

Sadly, it falls very short of that as of late.

People who believe 4chan to be the internet's equivalent to Mos Eisley and construct all their opinions/perceptions of it on that fact should just go visit and lurk for a while.
The board language, in-jokes and memes will seem impenetrable at first, but you'll begin to understand after a while.
Pick a board based on your interests and go from there (although avoid /v/, /vg/ is good for certain games) and just lurk.

You'll hopefully leave with some insight to how anonymity effects social norms and restrictions in discussions, for better and for worse.

4chan: WE ARE LEGION/NAKED PICTURES OF EMMA WATSON/OH NO NOT THIS AGAIN/GAMES JOURNALISM/FAGFAGFAG

Me: Yeah. . .about that. So, I saw an article on the business insider this morning, and well, I don't think it paints you in a very good light. Dare I say it, it makes you look like deplorable douches. Now I understand that not all the heads speak for each other, in-fact that as a community there is a wide range of both good and bad people (like most communities) but do you think you could deal with that head that keeps being such a sexist asshole all the time? I'll just post the link down here:

http://www.businessinsider.com/4chan-hackers-threatening-to-post-naked-photographs-of-emma-watson-2014-9

4chan: KILL ONE HEAD AND TWO APPEAR/SHE'S A SLUT AND SHE DESERVES IT/BUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH/THATS NOT WHAT GAMERGATE IS ABOUT/WE ARE NOT A HIVEMIND!

Me: Right, I know you're not a hivemind, no community is. . .now, the problem you have is that every-time something like this happens recently, it originates from one of the boards, either /b/ or /v/. It just seems that maybe its time for the moderators to take it in hand and do something about it. I know the anarchic nature of the community is one of the main draws for its members, but as long as you don't police the boards the worst, loudest voices in that community will continue to paint the rest of you in a bad light. Publicly attacking figures like this is only proving their point, and turning people against you. Are you aware of a quote commonly mis-attributed to from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., but actually originating from Zechariah Chafee?

4chan: WE ARE THE SPAWN OF DARKNESS/SCREW THAT FEMINAZI/WE DON'T CONTROL THOSE GUYS/HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT SILVERSTRING ARE DOING/NO I AM NOT

Me: It goes "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." Its a good rule to live by in my opinion. It plays into Free Speech as well. You have the right to talk, everyone does. You just don't have the right to be heard. People are free to judge you on your actions and words, and that means if you say something bone deep stupid or sexist, they are free to ignore, condemn, critique or ridicule. Just like Anita Sarkessian is free to critique video games. You are in turn, free to criticism her, but don't be surprised if after insulting, harassing and threatening her, she defends herself by shutting down comments. Thats a pretty reasonable response. Being civil, stopping your fist short of the other persons nose, means people are more likely to listen to you.

4chan: WE ARE THE VOICES OF CONTAGION/STFU SJW SHE WON'T SCREW YOU FOR IT/GODDAMNIT SHUT UP YOU ARE NOT HELPING/LOOK AT THESE CONNECTIONS IN MEDIA/THATS A GOOD POINT

Me: Similarly, attacking a public figure with threats of spreading pictures of her online is just going make people condemn the whole damn community. Maybe its time to stop ragging on the moderators over at 4chan and let them do the best job they can at cutting of the arsehole heads. Maybe they'll grow back, maybe in the meantime 4chan won't be a good place to discuss Gamergate, but I think for the good of the forum as a whole, and all the good parts of it, those voices need to be cleaned out.

4chan: WE ARE LORDS OF TYPHON/STFU FEMINAZI ARGH SWORD AND ACID/OH THANK GOD HE GOT CUT OFF/COLLUSION BETWEEN MODERATORS AND PRESS/THANKS FOR BEING REASONABLE.

Me: No problem. I'm going to go cruise /tg/. Stay classy you many headed beast of ruin!

4chan: WE ARE LEGION/...ARGH REGROWING HURTS LIKE YOUR MOM/DAMN HE'S BACK AGAIN/THE MOVEMENT IS NOT ABOUT ZOE QUINN/SEE YOU AROUND!

(Note: again, not overly serious. . .but come on guys, you have to understand why you have such an awful reputation around the internet, and people struggle to take you seriously, even when you have good points, when 4chan self identifies as the anarchic Mos Eisely of the internet.)

captcha: in over my head. . . .ho boy. . .

I'm sorry but you are obviously very misinformed with the situation and believe in whatever lies have been fed to you without doing the proper research.
