What Happens When Games Collide With Literature?

We at The Escapist are fans of great games. But we're also fans of great books. That got us thinking, "What if our greatest books could be combined with our favorite games?" With that in mind, we're asking you to come up with your own combinations.

Great Expectations, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda. What do all of these have in common? They are the great building blocks of what literature and gaming are today. So, what if we combined the two industries into one MEGA industry? We would have The Canterbury Tales of Symphonia, Confessions of Zeno Saga and The Sound and the Fists of Fury! There are so many great examples, we need your help. Here is how to participate:

  • You must be a registered member of The Escapist. You can sign up for your free account by clicking here, or Login with Facebook.
  • You must also have a valid Twitter account. They are free, so if you don't already have one, sign up for one here.
  • Then, follow @TheEscapistMag and Tweet your favorite Games and Literature mash-up and use the hashtag #greatgamelit
  • You can do this by taking any piece of literature and combining it with any game.
  • Here is an example of what you would post on Twitter: "A Tale of Two Sim Cities" #greatgamelit"
  • You may tweet multiple times throughout the day as long as the mash-ups are different.

If we see 500 of these mash-ups on Twitter before the end of today (Wednesday, July 28th at 11:59PM EST), everyone that participated will receive a limited edition badge.

Please Note: You must update your Escapist profile with your Twitter username. If you don't, there is no way for us to track you or give you the badge.

Good luck and may the literary and gaming industries never be the same!

In that case, this happens:

Anyway, sadly I don't use the social hype that is Twitter, so I can't join in.

Ok, seems like a decent forum game, but why are they doing this on Twitter? How does it make them money? Or are they just fishing for new members on the social networking giant?

So I have Twitter, and no idea how to use the damn thing. Anyone care to explain to this luddite, in idiot talk, how this works?

What you tend to get is a watered down lite mash palatable to the witless hordes, thigns like Bioshock and Dantes Inferno.....

Dante's Infern...oh, right.

I am putting in thigns that might as well be literature, The Elder Scrolls: Morowind , Final Fantasy 6, Fallout:A post nuclear role playing game., Buldars Gate, Lost Odyssey. Arcanum of Steamworks & Magic Obscura.

Wasn't there a series of kids books based off of Nintendo games back in the 80's? I always liked the ones for Bionic Commando and Simon's Quest.

THOSE were games and literature.

  1. Log into your Twitter account
  2. Post your idea and use the hashtag #GreatGameLit
  3. For example: "A Tale of Two Sim Cities" #GreatGameLit"
  4. It will pop up in your twitter feed as a post and will show up with all the other posts containing #GreatGameLit

Make sure you update your Escapist profile with your Twitter Username or you won't be able to get the badge. That is how we track everyone.

Twitter account??? Not in a thousand years...

What Happens When Games Collide With Literature?

Fanfiction happens...

Wow. A lot of people really aren't getting it. I think this was made far to complicated for the masses.

Some of them are pretty clever.

Now, I'm not getting a Twitter account just for this, so I'm basically giving people ideas, and here's my possibly crappy one:

Pride and Mass Prejudice Effect.

Nooooo! Anything but that!

Tried doing it with that, but I couldn't think of anything.

Damn at work now so can't touch my Twitter account. Going to have to do it tonight, only downside is unprotecting my tweets, I hate doing that because of all the spambots. Ah well I'll just reprotect them when this is over, at least its only a day, can't wait to get at it

Edit: Quick Question are the titles allowed to use references or does it actually have to be the title of the videogame?

Did I do it right?

Edit 2: Oh I see now.

You have to unprotect your tweets? WHAT?!

So not only have I had to follow someone, I now have to unprotect my tweet?

Wow, this is great, I didn't think The Escapist would be against privacy.

Curses. I do not Twitter, nor shall I! Good luck to all of you, though.

This sounds like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Damn! Ninja'd!), or Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.

Now THOSE might make good games. As for the rest, we'd probably just be stuck with a bunch of obtuse adventure games or QTE fun-fests like Heavy Rain.

Sorry. I just don't think this is such a good idea, unless you turn the source material inside out like they did with Dante's Inferno.

EDIT: Sorry. I don't know why I keep double posting.

I think as long as you follow Escapist's official Twitter account ( @TheEscapistMag I think it's called), you don't have to unprotect your tweets. Ask Spinwhiz though, I'm just guessing here.

Thank you Spinwhiz. Much obliged.

This is fun, but I do not Twitter. Ones I'm liking at the moment:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: The Rapture Story

Actually, come to mind, I do have a twitter, one I had to sign into once for a ridiculous class. I'll post them there instead. Adieu, off to be uselessly creative!

I'm faaaaairly sure we made five hundred. I RTed like a 100, and that was just the best ones...

How are we doing? Do I get a badge?

Personal favourite: "Rayman: a Farewell to Arms"
