Question of the Day, January 12, 2011

Later this month, Cryptic's Champions Online will get its free-to-play reboot. Will you be more likely to check it out now?

Yep.

Looking for a solid F2P MMO, and people are telling me LOTRO is going to run out of content very quickly, so...

I probably can't run it, and I don't play MMOs.

Other: I've played it a lot when it was P2P so I won't play the free version.

I barely have time to keep up with most of the big releases i want to play without attempting to maintain a decent ammount of hours in an MMO. Maybe that will change when things calm down and Guildwars 2 comes out but i always maintain that any MMO really needs a high playtime every week in order to get anything decent out of it by nature. When i used to play WoW, as soon as a dipped below a certain ammount of hours per week i felt like i was just treading water.

Nope. I play Closed Beta and it sucked, dont think they fixed it (since it went f2p).

Defiantly, i played for about a 8 months after it came out but i felt that what i was paying wasn't worth the content.

Now its free and got loads of shiny new stuff!

I will play it, if only to see all of Shamus's jokes come to fruition in real life.

Well, his LOTRO jokes totally held up.

I'ma say yes, since I've been paying to play it anyway. Wouldn't mind continuing to pay, assuming I have time to play. Main advantage here is that the community will get a nice boost.

And hey, now my cheaper friends can play without issue.

Other: I don't want to make a large download.

I actually want to. But I'll try to not.
Because what happened the last time i started playing a P2P MMO that had turned F2P.
Jesus, i was playing it non-stop. I mean, i can't afford to waste so much time, again!
But still, it's tempting...

if you played it so much and thought it was a waste of time ... then iam sorry but you don't seem to play for the right reasons.

OT: well if the free version wont lock any core gameplay such as curtain powers or skills then sure id play it .. if it does then its just a company seeking for quick profits from the micro transactions .

I was looking at it.
And seriously considering. I missed out on the craze that was City of Heroes and its counterpart, City of Villains...

So I've still yet to grit my teeth into any kind of Superhero MMO.

So when I have some spare cash laying around that I can buy the game with, I'll definitely look into it.

FREE mmo ... the extra cash would be on petty things like extra custumes and locked adventures ..nothing too big :3

No, played the beta and thought it was boring.

Yes, if they ever decide to bring it to Mac.

I highly doubt I'd have any trouble running it, I just don't care for MMOs.

Oh no, sorry, you misunderstood. I wanted to say that i did enjoy it, but eventually, when looking back, it made me think: "What could i have done instead of playing 550 hours of that game?" I kinda wanted that time back. Sure, it might be childish and stupid, but still. I'm not complaining. I enjoyed it. But i won't let myself enjoy such a thing again. I'll try to do something else, i guess.

I think I'm trying to say that my mind is to weak to resist the lure of MMOs. I get addicted to them fast, and i don't want that to happen (again).

referring entirely to the price of the actual game. Have to buy it first to enjoy all that... Free...

my computer sucks too bad for anything like that.

Better be able to pay around $50, LOTRO won't let you level to maximum with anything less.

I definitely won't be touching it, look at the currency cap. Currently it's in place in LOTRO and bottlenecks the game around level 30.

The options - I don't play MMOs / I don't have a gaming PC - should be separate.

if my computer can run it i will try it.

I won't be playing Champions Online, only because I play WoW and just don't have time for another MMO on top of everything else in my life...

Not really interested, I'm playing GA right now (mainly cuz it was cheap lol) but I'm really just biding my time until when TOR comes out so chances of me really sinking into another mmo are thin.

you dont need to buy it ....
the FREE-to-play model is what it sound completely free .
you need only to download the game and you can play it, the only thing you pay for are extra adventure packs and vanity items in the shop.

no level cap for free players in this game.

I've tried other Free 2 Play games that I knew nothing about so playing something that I already know a little about might be amusing.

I played it for about a week when it was first released but I came to the conclusion that it was utter gash. I can't see that enough would have changed to make me like it now.

Cryptic have dropped the ball quite badly with their last couple of releases (considering the success of City of Heroes) so I keep half expecting to see a news post saying they're the next MMO studio to go out of business.

No. I tried the trial a while ago and while the costumize function for your character was really awesome the game seemed to lack everything else. The controls were rather odd as well, if I recall correctly.
To be honest, I didn't give the game a real chance, but I don't want to either.

Already tried the existing free trial and I have the same initial opinion as I did with CoV/H/X (whatever letter they put on the end now days)

Character creation is 100% of the reason to play, fill the slots with cool looking people then go play WoW or something. I said that 'before' Cata' and that improved everything about WoW.

(Funny enough I'm reading back 'after' writing this and seeing it's an existing opinion)

Other, tried the F2P Beta, didn't hold up.
Besides, I'm gettin Borderlands today :P

Other: No.
If I'm going to play a game that limits my powers to "archetypes" I might as well go with the PROVEN one and play City of Heroes/Villains, the customization isn't nearly as convoluted as its, and a better game overall.

And if I'm going to pay to play a super hero game, again it'll be either CoH/V, or maybe DC Universe, as the beta for that game was fun at the least.

I'd give it a try if I had a better computer.

I'd play anything that's free.
