Trailers: Prototype 2: Alex Mercer

So, they're sitting there congratulating themselves for a writing twist a retarded 5-year-old could have come up with? Wonderful. Someone call Hollywood for a movie deal while we're at it, this is the kind of crap that's guaranteed to sell in theatres.
The first game had tremendously awful writing already, but lo and behold, from the looks of it ther's always room to move further down the ladder.

Isnt anybody else worried, that it looks like the new guy rips that big mutants arm of via qte?
i was kinda happy that they limited that aspect to hijacking tanks and helis in the last game.
still, i hope we get some new abilities to play around with, rather than the old stuff...

Truly-A-Lie:
"Where do you go from there?" Back to square one apparently. While I think the switch to antagonist is quite a good idea (and is where I was hoping Resistance 3 would go), spending time to build up Alex so much in the first game, only to move on to someone new who slowly develops the exact same powers just annoys me. Unless they've improved their storytelling to allow Alex's motivation to make sense, I can't see myself playing Prototype 2.

Wicky_42:
Sooooo... why does Alex make another super-infection guy? And why does he spread the plague after spending most of the last game slicing and dicing it?

They'll probably have it make sense at some point near the game. So before that, we're going to spend almost all of the game except for the last 5 missions going "What the FUCK DOES THIS ALL MEAN!?"

ScoopMeister:
I'm not happy with the idea of making Mercer the enemy. I really liked him as a protagonist, so turning that around just doesn't seem right. But hey... we'll see how it turns out next year.

I bet you it's something like he has a completely justified reason like he was actually making him really powerful to recruit him or... I don't fucking know.

Fake Nicker:
Watch the video carefully. Youll se that Blacklight indeed tries to consume this new prot... but the hatret indside burns blacklights hand off "see his face when he looks at his stumped arm" and in doing so infects a new super mutant.

Also humans always want to blaim someone for al missfortune so im pretty sure that it really doesnt matter to this new guy that mercer is infact dead and now is a multitude of people memories inside a virus.

Also in the end of Prototype 1 Blacklight finally understands what it is and if im not mistaken a virus meat blob taken form as a human doesnt necesarily sympasize with humans. So to make more meat blob virusses wouldnt seem to far off to me.

Uhh, yeah this.

just started playing the first game...feels pretty awesome being a mix between spider-man and the hulk or whatever

not sure how a second game would feel necessary but I'll hold judgment until I finish the first game heh

The biggest thing that confuses me is that they had already laid the seeds for a much better sequel: Pariah. All the foreshadowing about it being the end of the world if Mercer and Pariah met, all the backstory via Web of Memories, and they just ignore it in favor of a completely new out of left field situation. Plus, it almost looks like they're trying to shoehorn in this story and say it took place DURING the first game. Makes no sense.

Unless I'm wrong about when this takes place, and unless Mercer deliberately MAKES this new protagonist to help him go after Pariah, the story is going to suck. I say delay another year and write a good story for the game.

So we're kicking all the buildup Prototype 1 gave us and replace the main character with a generic knuckle head. Great. At least, there's no cover based shooting. But no, won't get my money for going for the stupid Alien 3 route of killing characters incoherently.

Uh-oh, looks like the Prototype franchise will end for me sooner than expected. Well, judging from what data I have anyway, maybe I just don't know enough of the game to understand anything at all just now.

Don't get me wrong, making Mercer (and by "(Alex) Mercer" I mean the identity the virus has developed by the end of the game, not the original person) the antagonist is - in itself - nothing bad, it even has the benefit of letting you start from zero again with a new character and delivering a powerful enemy at the same time. I do prefer it to making bad excuses about new enemies and how the protagonist of the prior game gets depowered.

But I'm afraid Mercer is getting the Idiot Ball this time, and there's nothing more dissatisfying than defeating an idiot and being portrayed like it's a great achievement.

I could excuse Alex Mercer becoming the villain despite him saving the city, despite him defeating the Redlight Virus, despite him developing real emotions and attachments to humans. After all, he was betrayed numerous times and as a virus he probably could have some deep instinct of acquiring more biomass or enlarging his territory - that part could be excused somehow, even if it wouldn't satisfy me because it would mean degrading the entire character development for me - back again to animalistic instincts from a complex and troubled existence that is unsure about its own identity, purpose and fate.

In fact, in the end, he is filled with regret and self-despise in my opinion, he hates the part of him that started the infection, even tho it meant he got to live, this new existence came to be, at the price of the lives of others.
He, ultimately, puts the lives of others ahead of his own and goes to extremes to that. That makes him an unlikely hero, an anti-hero for me, someone who slaughters hundreds, thousands of peoples to reach his goal, which is, in the end, saving others. We got no canon info about how he handled civilians after all, so we can't even say he killed or nom'd innocents (on purpose) at all.
He could've just ditched New York and flown away in a helicopter after all (and even with the "animalistic" traits of a virus it would've made more sense to start anew somewhere less dangerous), but I guess it was his sense of responsibility that made him follow a different path without questioning it.

It might be over-analyzing, but seeing the amount of Fridge Brilliance everywhere in Prototype, I can't help but think the writers did put a lot of effort into developing this rather complex and intriguing character once you get behind his potato face.

And now he's powering up some random dude and makes him angry.

There's just no excuse for that. Not even if Alex was bored and wanted a toy to play with, he knows what it's like to be a toy, a lab rat, I don't think he'd be egoistic enough to do something like that after the first game's events. He knows how quickly this stuff can get out of control, he, as a researcher and the blacklight virus in itself, knows how unpredictable and versatile these superpowers can get.
It's always so boring to see villains that impose challenges onto themselves and then they ultimately get defeated by their own arrogance. It's just so cliché and such a common way to make the victory graspable for a new hero against a villain that knows all the tricks.

While reading your post i thought of this: In the end the new protagonist will find a way to take Merce's powers leaving him weak but somehow Mercer will kill him and we will have an explanation why he will have to start from zero in the third game.
Edit: And in the third game we will face Pariah. Of course it is more likely that Kratos will start hugging and loving us all.

I hope they can actually make a storyline to make you feel like all that stuff that they just said, and give you motivation.

Instead of just telling you "you should feel like this because we said so."

Rednog:
Wait...what?
Alex Mercer?! He's dead....
I really don't get why they keep referring to Blacklight as Alex Mercer, is it just me or are these guys pissing all over their own lore? Putting the getting infected aside, this guy wants revenge on Alex Mercer for unleashing the Blacklight virus....but Alex Mercer is dead so how is this supposed to be the motivation for the protagonist?

Blaclight has basically taken on the identity of Alex Mercer, but knows now that it is simply a virus that has taken human form. Why not keep the form that people will recognise, a form that people relate to Blacklight.

Why take Alex Mercer's form, when not make a medley of people he has absorbed to make a new identity, hell why keep Alex Mercer's form when Alex Mercer was being hunted down for most of the first game and he is basically public enemy #1. And the real Alex Mercer was kind of a selfish douche...

So we, as gamers, know who he is

I'm unimpressed. Either they're playing this straight, in which case it sounds completely retarded, or they're covering up a more complex plot with this as a sort of feint. That still doesn't make me want to play it.

Still, whatever. If they do a better job of balancing the gameplay than they did the first time around, I'll be sold. Expecting anything other than mediocrity from videogame writers is foolish.

I'd say it makes sense, maybe Mercer is starting to go insane, and the reason he infects the new guy is because he wants/needs someone to take him out. Maybe Elizabeth Greene is starting to manifest herself in Mercer's mind.

You know, I'll pull out a story out of my ass right off the bat without thinking:
Alex realizes he is about to die because of this virus thingy inside him, he needs a successor so he infects some other guy with the same powers. Out of no real reason Alex apparently acts like a dick forcing the new guy to develop his powers and get stronger. At the end, surprise surprise, it turns out Alex is not really the enemy and he dies for some reason. The new guy dramatically screams "nooooo", promises to avenge him (lolwut?) and we see him standing on a skyscraper watching down the city with an guitar leading into the ending credits.

It would piss me really off, if the story turns out so simple.
Even though Alex is not a really deep character, I have grown to like him. Why should I play as someone else?

Uhm yeah, they didn't actually tell us what Alex Mercer will do in Prototype 2 so the whole video was... pointless?
Is he attacking a city, will he just sit around in a corner, twiddling his thumbs until we reach him? What's his deal in Prototype 2? THAT's what I want to know, not hearing for the umpteanth time how he "created" James Heller.

does the armored formed look like guyver or is it just me? in fact, the whole game is strikingly similar to guyver

I still object to the name of the Prototype sequel.
It should be named [Project] or something similar.

So the main focus of the game is that the villain is stronger than you?

How would Heller know that Alex Mercer died? Regardless, he wants to kill Blacklight for murdering his family.

Aiden_the-Joker1:
I am going to be honest. If the game ends with me killing Alex then I'm not going to get it. Also if you watch the video Alex tries to consume this guy but his hatred is so strong it blasts of Alex's arm and he looks at it confused, this infects the new guy. So Alex is strong enough to survive a nuclear blast but cannot overpower an emotion? Also I'm pretty sure he isn't that lost his family and is angry at Mercer but you can consume anyone else just fine. Alex even developed a technique that lets him consume mutants who are as powerful as him. I guess maybe that's not why he couldn't consume him, so we'll just have to wait and see.

So you that kind of guy who dont read the whole thread? If you were youd see i allready wrote that... thanks for the wastefill and pointing out whats wrong with forums these days. I give you 8 out of 10

I guess I'm the only one who gave a shit about the story in PROTOTYPE...

Anyway, I'd much rather play as Alex, but as long as the game is fun and the story is serviceable I'll be happy.

Im going to take another spin at this.

Ok "zeus" ventures fouth in prototype 1 in the end. I think its easy to say that pariah isnt anywhere near events in Prot 1. Lets say Zeus goes looking for pariah to get more answers or just to kick ass. What he finds is a town/city allready infected by pariah. The new protagonist thinks all this shitgoingdowness is zeuses fault and attacks. Lets say this guy is allready infected by the pariah string and when mercer tries to consume him the pariah virus is to strong and consumes zeuses hand. New prot guy then merges with blacklight making him part pariah part blacklight. Still thinking that its all zeuses fault ( and in not having consumet the whole mercer (his brain?) id gather he doesnt get his memories so he cant see it isnt his fault) he goes on a mercer hunting trip. And i think that its all spinned so that we all start out to think that it indeed is mercers doing, knowing nothing about pariahs work until past midgame.

best idea i've heard so far.

Am I the only one who noticed some cell shading going on? Last time western designers used Cell Shading in their games it was on PS1, after it was found that it looked better, because the 3d graphics had been pushed to the limit.

I saw a previous trailer where they said Mercer infected Heller because he saw promise in him, which while clichéd, is a valid motivation for infection. Also, it hasnt been confirmed that this is Alex, apparently one of their plot trump cards is the question "is this Mercer?" according to the devs.

I dont know why every one is asking where Pariah is, as the available footage only shows the new main character's initial motivation, and there's no way in hell that he'd know who Pariah is.

As for the "Main character becomes villain" thing, I dont know why everyone is surprised, I mean this isnt a new technique.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RogueProtagonist
I also dont get why people are so attached to him. Video game franchises switch protagonists so often that we really should have expected this.

I think that that this game turning out to be decent might be more likely than you'd think, though I do understand thats it's just as likely to bomb really. I really hope they can pull off the writing, it might even be the example of ethnic diversity in main characters that the industry needs.

I liked the first one. I'll probably like this one as well.

Er, I thought Pariah was the end boss in the first game? The General took Greene's baby and raised him to be the Specialist soldier and once Mercer/Blacklight/Zeus got round to absorbing the General's memories he realised the connection. The Specialist knew he'd figure he was Pariah there and then so revealed his whole plan as the villain should before very inefficiently trying to dispatch the hero.

HankMan:
The developers' passion for the game is almost infectious.
