Zero Punctuation: Hard Reset Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT
This week, Shooter Season 2011 continues as Zero Punctuation reviews Hard Reset.
I was under the distinct impression that the space marines in 'Space Marine' were blue, not brown :P
Hard Reset in 25 words or less: Hey, he's just this guy, you know?
i was going to get this but now i think i will wait for it to go down in price first
Well... it makes sense that humans relate to humans more than unfeeling refrigerators... And robots don't bleed near as much...
Awww. I was half expecting this to be loved, Painkiller-style (and no doubt so were the devs, who will now be weeping as their Yahtzee-powered-sales-bump slips out of their hands) Anyway, I rather liked Quake II. Sure you didn't mean the original, which really was the brownest of brown shooters. So, Rage next week?
Man, I couldn't agree less with the observation that organics are more fun to shoot. Have you seen the way these robots explode into a million tiny bits? After the last explosion dies down and everything in the area is dead or destroyed, you can still hear the metallic clunks of robot debris raining down. It's an absolute joy to see these things violently come apart. Also, they put out a patch already that lets you switch between two weapons with one button. ;)
This would be a pretty cool indie game if it came out years ago, but I really don't think it holds up that well. I also wasn't blown away with anything about pain killer, so I really don't know why Yahtzee has this unending hope for the studio.
Hurrm. Not as funny as the prior shows, but still pretty good.
I'm kinda surprised he didn't seem to like this more, I thought the weapons were pretty creative but they didn't even get a mention, well I still want it, Ill probably get it during a holiday sale though since there are a few things I want more like heroes 6, oh well, guess the next shooter that he might like will be serious sam bfe.
Yep . I was starting to think that Yahtzee has finally droped in the mainstream media reviewer nightmare but he still is the old Yahtzee .
Well blowing up humans into giant clouds of red mist has always been more fun than taking a sledge to a machine. Oh well, I was hoping to hear this would be similar to Painkiller but as it stands it looks to be another cyberpunk game I'd probably not get too into.
I was also under the imperssion that they were blue too. So wrong i have been.
Your lose for never looking into any of the mods for Quake 2. There was over a half decade worth of fun, unique entertainment that gaming will never see again, which you never got to experience. And for that I pity you. Look up Gloom for Quake 2 some time. I think a few of the guys who worked on that are working on the new Aliens game now.
Great stuff as always, it almost seemed as he liked it at some points, but also in way it seemed like he hated it. I guess we'll have to wait for Extra Punctuation before we can know for sure.
Yeah, Hard Reset is flawed but good enough to warrant playing. I think I counted six enemy types in total (buzzsaw chicken, walking bomb, monkey, humanoid clawy thing, humanoid shooty thing, rocket spamming bullet sponge) which is way too little for a game even of this short length. Hell, Minecraft has more enemy variety.
OK. I understand why Space Marine left a sour taste in your mouth. Relic is full of asses with hands attached to them. What was your problem with Quake 2? It was a shooter. It had a bunch of weapons and varied enemies and environments that were incomparable to anything released at the time. Why throw out a random piece of flame bait?
Yeah, well clearly they were brown.
Actually, from what I understand, they're not ALL blue. Just a good number of them. But I never really got into 40K.
I feel quite sad now that I'm going to miss Yahtzee doing the Space Marine 40k review. I'm having a lot of mindless fun with the shallow yet grinding multiplayer. But then again my limitations towards gaming these days have been limited to league of legends and only league of legends.
Yes, but the point is that they were blue in the game, not brown.
You can switch between the two different weapons with one button. It got patched in a few weeks after launch.
I dunno, I still think there is a future for robot-killing shooters. At least there weren't any chest high walls right?
"Well then PISS OFF! This is shooter season 2011" Holy Crackers I laughed so hard.
And your point? Mods do not a good game make. If a game requires 3rd Party mods to be fun, then the game is doing something wrong. You might buy a game - Oblivion, Fallout 3, Doom - for the modding community it has, but what other people have done is irrelevant. Yahtzee reviews the game as they are, not with everyone and their mother adding stuff to it. That wouldn't be a review of the game.
You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with other people's moms Yahtzee.
Looks like it. | |
Further point is also that Yahtzee isn't immune to pre-fabricated opinion. He hates game with built in cover/chest high wall - Space Marines didn't have that. I mean there's so much brown there, right? The game is far from perfect of course (I think the 75 it has on meta-critic is pretty accurate. Add 10 points if you're a fan of the ip), and there's plenty of thing to find to hate about it I'm sure, and Yahtzee sure did hate it... but it feels it's mainly because he hates the IP, which he's allowed of course and Yahtzee has never been known for his objectivity... but still, it's rather odd to see a game get so much right from the Yahtzee's 'What make a good game check list' and still earn his vitriol.
Just a shame it's only about four and a half hours long. Even for just thirty bucks, that's not much bang. Stalling in three... two... one...
I get the impression that Yahtzee plays for the story and the atmosphere and not so much the actual gameplay. How the game actually plays is usually just a small fraction of a ZP vid.
LOL everyone! Ultramarins are Ultramarine! I know colors :D. Lets ignore the obvious point, now lets mention the primary colors of the Tau and Chaos Space Marines :o!
Well he nailed it, the game is very much lacking variety, sure it's leaps and bounds above the modern warfare shooters but others still do things better. As for the plot, I was in "*dropped jaw* what the shit is going on here" mode from the first cutscene on, really can't make out what they were trying to put together.
But most importantly, Yahtzee likes pissing off fanboys. And that he did.
Shooter Season 2011 is pretty good so far. Lot of interesting titles and interesting takes on all of them. I look forward to seeing how Rage stacks with the rest. Moreover, did Yahtzee get the PC or console or both? :D
I find it odd that Yahtzee (who often complains about sameness and repetition in AAA games that I enjoy) was actually less bothered by the lack of variety in this game than I was, also I would add to the list of problems with this game the fact that enemies take way to many shots to bring down but aren't actually that threatening so the game ends up losing the frenetic pace that makes games like painkiller awesome, that and the thrice damned slow ass menu screens make me want to tear my hair out
