GDC 2008: BioShock's Creator, Ken Levine, On Ken Levine
This past Thursday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ken Levine, creator of System Shock 2, BioShock, Thief and just about every other game you should've played in the past 10 years. He'd finished a talk earlier in the week on storytelling, and was gracious enough to chat about life with Take 2 (he'll never be a joiner), his take on compelling narrative and how World of Warcraft may improve your virility.
Nice - I've always wanted to see behind the veil of Bioshock and the System Shock games, so this was a lovely little treat.
The questions were really good - half the points discussed I'd have never thought of bringing up, and I really respect that. It what separates the mediocre from the insightful.
Aside from anything else, I was supprised by the praise near the end for Bungie- they dont deserve all the hate they get. I was also suprised to find another Arbiter fan.
Aside from that, it's really an amazing look at the philosophy behind atmospheric design.
Great interview, guys. Thanks.
