Fungal Dissident

So in this analogy, is Bowser some Shaka Zulu equivalent, leading a militaristic force of his people to cast out the foreign oppressors?

(Obligatory conspiracy theory that Peach is just the figurehead, and they keep her around to get kidnapped and distract Bowser so Toad Parliament can actually run mushroom kingdom)

I've never even played a Mario game (seriously, and I'm 40), and I thought this was hilarious.

The look on Peach's face is perfect.

Legitimately sounds like something someone on tumblr would actually think. For that reason I just couldn't find this funny, that's where we're at right now.

So that's where the mushroom power-ups come from! Another one of life's little mysteries solved.

This sounds like something Game Theory would come up with.

So is this implying that Mario/Luigi are actually eating/absorbing/consuming in some way the dissident citizens themselves in order to grow to double their size? Is this a feature of all the citizens of the Kingdom or just the ones that get stuffed into the box?

It just raises further questions...

Remember when this comic was about video games, and not politics?

This post legitimately sounds like something someone on Tumblr would say, too.

Yay irony?

You know I always wondered about that. Why IS peach in charge? In fact, how come her main enforcers aren't mushrooms either?

Seeing as how there was always a toadstool to tell you the princess was in another castle I think it's fair to assume that Bowser wants to enslave the "free" citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. For the toadstools it's probably a case of better the devil you know.

Do you know what questions end with Mr.Toad?

Well... that got dark out of nowhere... o_O"

This why #istandwithbowser he is true ruler of mushroom kingdom

I guess that would also explain why all the Toads sound as nervous as a cat in a rocking chair store in the Mushroom Kingdom.

I thought they Toads were just wearing hats. Aren't they just wearing hats?

But he's not a mushroom either.

Look at this motherfucker, and tell me he's not the rightful king.

That would give her some real reason to rule, whats with royalty feeling they are different that their subjects.

yes and No continuity is fucked in super mario. It's never consistent.

I cannot argue with those mustache. They are truly magnificent. All hail Toadsworth.

I remember reading a bunch of speculation somewhere that Peach is a mushroom as well. I can't remember where it was but it was so insane it sounded possible.

I always took at as an allegory of Ptolemaic Egypt with Peach as a sort of Cleopatra vibe.

Maybe they're continually secretly hiring Bowser and his crew to depose Peach and Mario keeps ruining their efforts?

But, you know, presented less click-baity and obnoxious.

Not the first to think about that

That said, I really like Peach's face in the comic.

And other people have done this joke as well. I know I remember two at least, I just don't remember who did them. And outside webcomics "what if peach is actually a tyrant lol" is a really old joke.

I quite LIKE this comparison!

"...where we're at..."

You got a mouse in your pocket? ;p

OT: Yeah, Mario games are kind of more messed up than you'd think for a game aimed at kids, people who played it when they were kids, and adults that like childish glee. Then again, so is pokemon. <-<

Aren't all the blocks suppose to be mushroom people turned into stone? Meaning all those times you break them, you're actually destroying innocent civilians?

As for Peach, I heard she was like Mario. Someone from another would who came to the kingdom and like Mario and Luigi, had some special powers so they made her the ruler. Like how they made the brothers their heroes.

Though, given some of the official lore of the games, that may have been some poor choices on mushroom peoples part. :/

Because the original game Mario appeared in was Donkey Kong, and Peach was most likely originally intended to be Pauline (his kidnapped girlfriend from DK) until they realized that made even less sense than Donkey Kong and changed the plot to the kidnapped-princess thing.

In the original few games 'mushroom kingdom' probably didn't refer to the residents, either, so much as the scenery in the wild areas, which were mostly giant mushrooms you jumped on. The only actual mushroom-type non-antagonist you saw up through Super Mario 3 was Toad, the other non-antagonist civilians were mostly things like sentient clouds and giants (the dude whose sock you borrow) and so on. There wasn't a supreme mushroom-man master race thing implied until really recent games, the bulk of the citizenry could have been human for all we knew... honestly, I assumed they were mostly the koopas and goombas and that they were rebelling, even when I was a kid.

I'm pretty sure she was being sarcastic. Mocking the people who commonly complain about there being politics in this comic.

And to top it off, she recruits mercenaries from other worlds to maintain her rule over mushroom society.

Perhaps it's time to send a few UN peacekeepers down that pipe?

huh, Erin went blonde.

Oh man, I loved peach's expression. I'm going to picture her making that face every time someone taunts her in smash bros. I'm considering making that my avatar...

Putting the mushroom people in the question mark blocks makes it all the more creepy considering mario hits those and eats whatever comes out.

Considering there's the trend where the female of fantasy species is almost always a smoking hot humanoid, regardless of what the rest of the people look like, that kind've makes sense; it's stupid and ass-backwards as far as going out of the way to give the hero a "relatable" damsel, but it fits.
