Yes, yes, yes. In the Emperor's name, do what he says.

Remember, only you can prevent night terrors.

[email protected] that vid, thanks for posting it Barbas

however, its not *just* thin your paints...
its

mix your paints with varnish (matt or gloss, gives a lovely translucency)
mix Inks with Varnish (helps make your inks last longer and is great for shadowing areas. also with gloss varnish, makes great water and wet look)

and remember that you dont allways have to use white or black to base your work, sometimes a mix of the two, or a nice matt gray (of varying shades) works just as well
(i find that if i want my colours to be brighter, white is good and black is better for the darker shades)

oh, and its good to learn to drybrush well. you can get some amazing effects and tricks with all those tricks/tips

Or you can use colours or chromatic greys if you're feeling brave.

I've built Kraken Nids using a purple base coat, against the red and sand tones it looks unnatural in the best possible way.

Tau look really good with red based or green based greys as base coats too.

well yeah, you can realy use any colour as a base.
(but i have been given looks of utter horror by some people, for doing anything but black as a base coat before now. i have a huge army of skeletons pieced together from half filled copies of Heroquest found in charity shops and boot sales and all they need is a quick coat of cream, then a wash with a drop of brown ink in matte varnish to give them shadow and dirt, and a drop of colour in the eyes and they are done! lol)

i wonder if the captcha is trying to suggest something...(pub love? realy?)
oh, i know, it wants me to dig out my tavern diorama pieces and finish them lol...good idea!

Any advice on a cost efficient way to top coat?

depends on which type of top coat (varnish) you prefer.

some people swear by matte varnish, others swear by gloss.
but the best tip i can give, if you use acrylic paints is not to buy the specialist ones in little pots whenever possable.
i used to do that, and i spent a lot of money back in the '80s on them.

then i discovered craft shops did large bottles (compared to the tiny pots) of not only paint, but varnish and effects (pearl mix is realy wonderfull. fine glitter and glow in the dark ect have uses too)that can help you make some fantastic set pieces
(the glitter, if the aurora type, can be used to great effect in making frost, ice and slime effects for multiple time settings)

if you still prefer the small pots, then i reccomend you keep your empties (for refilling) and just buy your main primarys (red/blue/green/yellow) and the bases you use most (usualy white and black, but everyone uses those two more anyway for lightening and darkening, so you allways need more) along with a large matte and gloss varnish. its much cheaper if you grab those from craft shops in reasonable size bottles becasue you can go through so much if you are (like me lol) a double coater (2 coats of varnish to make sure they dont chip lol)

i havent bought any little pots for ages now, but whenever a craft shop has a sale, i buy those main colours, and any varnish i can, and that keeps me going. (and they often arent selling them as [specific game name] paints, but as just general craft acrylics, so are often cheaper)

you can still grab the spcial case ones tho, if you need them for highly specific coloursets and stuff. it can be realy hard to mix the same shade if you have a large set to cover. but the varnish from the craft shops is a bit of a must (for me at least lol)

Honestly, if you're looking for cost effective, you can go as cheap as a rattle can of Matte vanish or you can pick up giant bottles of liquitex coats for super cheap. I have a piece coming soon about that though, don't worry!

I'd like to point out that "Drying retarder" is an ableist slur. The preferred term is "Drying neuroatypical or differently abled".

Y'know, I do wish I had this guide when I first started painting miniatures instead of the years of trial, error, frustration and sometimes anger-induced destruction.
But thank you anyway because there are things I'd forgotten over the years and have been wanting to get back into painting miniatures even if I don't play much these days.

Dude watch the poe's law, if some NT seriously started speaking like that to me I'd flip the fuck out and I know sjws can be that stupid so please don't give them ideas.

I think we should go the whole hog and create SJWH40k:

-Blanket nerfs for all factions except Sororitas
-Roll 2D6 to check your privilege before capturing objectives
-Sisters of Battle players can deep-strike Grey/White Knight allies into the battle at no extra cost
-The Assault phase is renamed to Trolling, Harassment and Death Threats phase
-Space Marines now fight unarmoured because Power Armour is an archaic systemic privilege

Sorry, I'll stop.

Running is removed as an option during the shooting phase because it's ableist to those who cannot run.

In addition, you could try matte or gloss acrylic spray - available at hardware stores with the spray paints. It's amazing stuff, evenly coats, fast-drying, no risk of ruining the detail you just labored over.
