Zero Punctuation: Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell

Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell

This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell.

Watch Video

All hail Rocket Launcher, the one true king.

A rare occasion where I've played the game before the Zero Punctuation, grand!

I kinda wish I did play the Xbox One version of Saints Row IV now before Gat Out Of Hell just for that light change, but since most of the game I spent playing as Kinzie it's OK. I basically agree, it's a bit overcrowded but at the end of the day it's a nice little addition to the original Saints Row IV and I vastly enjoyed myself, however shit I was at the flying activities.

Edit: And applause for the publisher because charging £35 for the GOTY version of Saints Row IV as well as Gat Out Of Hell was a move I didn't think possible when most of the current gen games start at £45-50 and stay there for months on end, and often have vastly less content than just the non-DLC version of Saints Row IV alone.

I got it for $5 through Gamestop so.....I'll get to it eventually. After hearing several other reviewers bitch about it replacing their version of the SR4 President with a generic male beefy standin I was quite surprised to see it put my Major Kusanagi lookalike President in the game though.

The Great JT:
All hail Rocket Launcher, the one true king.

The mighty dagger is the true king of this land. Hail the dagger king.

Note: He says the game reskins Steelport from SR3, but that's wrong. The game actually uses a mostly new city half Steelport's size with some hell versions of both Steelport and Stillwater landmarks thrown in.

Honestly I still think they should've left Gat dead after SR3. Yeah, he was interesting in SR1 and 2 when stuff was more grounded and "let's just flip out and kill everybody" was the exception, not the rule but by the time we got to SR3 he was really played out. Characters like Oleg were far more interesting but I guess they offed him in 4 because he and his clones had special gameplay mechanics that weren't in SR4.

Was Volition even involved in this one? I thought it was all High Voltage (known for shovelware and The Conduit).

I would've called the mandatory activities a callback to SR2 but in 2 I did all six levels of both fight club activities and that got me enough rep to go through the entire game.

The game does explain how Dane got the halo, it just puts it in one of those audio logs that you're supposed to collect.

I'll give it credit for the visual design and actually making me laugh a couple of times, but somehow I just find myself hoping that whatever theoretical Saints Row V they have planned manages to be even more functionally deranged than this and SR4. Maybe something like Gurren Lagann but with more purple and swearing.

I have no idea why Johnny Gat's so great, but this was still funny, especially the halo-on-the-knob bit, and how you made The President look with those cut-outs. I agree that zombie add-ons (in my day, we called them expansion packs!) do sound lazy, and its tough to go wacky sci-fi when a main installment in a series does it, so here's what Assassin's Creed did: after Black Flag, they made a DLC story starring Adewale, Edward Kenway's quartermaster aboard the Jackdaw, and set it in Port-au-Prince and taking on slavery of that era. It was a good one, too.

I would like to see pictures of her, since you've piqued my interest.

I really hate how the game series assumes everyone is playing a male avatar and not a female one. I played 2, 3 and 4 as a woman looking vaguely like Taylor Swift circa 2009, not as a male. At least that's what the generic Caucasian female looks like. Every dialog with the character leaves out gender pronouns, but a lot of it was from a male's perspective. It really got weird in SR IV when all of the "sex" cutscenes assumed I was a man and Pierce said he normally doesn't swing that way or when Asa said she's on top. And so on.

Now in Gat out of Hell, the game assumes again we are male.

"Getting Satan's Halo isn't explained"

Bullshit. Look for the audio logs (yes, yes, I know, audio logs are shit). It's explained that Blackbeard stole it from Satan himself, and the guy from Ultor spent a small fortune to get it from him in the event that the President ever came to Hell so he could use it as a peace offering.

Also, the game does not assume you are male. It pulls the appearance of your character from a Saints Row IV save file if you have one and uses gender-neutral pronouns or "The Boss" to refer to your character.

I'm not sure why, but I'm utterly apathetic towards Gat Out Of Hell.

Watched the Zero Punctuation video, it was witty enough. But the subject matter... well, it's more Saints Row, right? That would be the third Saints Row-based Zero Punctuation now, and funny enough, I don't think Yahtzee bothered to talk much about the gameplay either. What more needs to be said? It's a stand alone expansion of GTA3+++, this particular brand has gone loony, and apparently they decided to drag Hell into the picture this time, with angelical themed powers, or something?

Ugh, actually, I take it back, I can fathom why I'm utterly apathetic towards Gat Out Of Hell. It's a series that takes a shit on itself for the lawls, now taking a shit on Christianity too. It's like the crazy drunk guy in the corner took a leak on the bible. Who cares what he took a leak on? He was fun at first, but now he's just the crazy drunk bumbling about on the corner of the room, and he blends in so well with the white noise of post-modern existence that I honestly would sooner just forget he exists. Sorry, Volition, you made a good game but still managed to drive your series straight into obscurity.

Alright then. Looks like I'll buy this game when Steam has it on sale for fewer than ten bucks. Thanks, Yahtzee. You and I don't have the same general taste in games, but you give enough detail in your reviews that I can consider myself an informed consumer.

MFW Yahtzee mentions Les Misérables in his video:

Great review thank you for posting : ) Looking for that Halo Hula DLC for GooH to be released soon...

Yeah, I got stuck in that loop as well - how come they don't do X or I wish there was more of Y stuff oh wait it was only $20 so hrmm.

I think really we are looking for more Saints Row but considering how the recent one ended, unless they do a dream sequence or time warp thing that story has been painted into a corner heh.

I somewhat enjoyed GooH but that lingering feeling of wanting more "stuff" was a bummer : )

Well thank goodness for Saints Row so we have less serious content and more focus on fun and over the top silliness.

I do look forward to what the developers will do next.

I sincerely hope the developers bring back some of the cast introduced in Saint's Row 3. Honestly even friggin' nightblade was more interesting/entertaining to have around than Johnny Gat, who really is kind of a flat character since everyone in the cast is a walking avatar of destruction and thus his defining character trait is made mundane. It's not like they even need to contrive a reason. We know that using time-travel to pull people out of history is easily done, and it's not like they'll severely alter history's course if they evacuate people just before the earth explodes.

I do hope that if they go for another sequel, they leave out super powers this time. Yeah super powers are fun, but they remove any real incentive to use vehicles and rob us of the sheer bliss that was a sprinting nut shot. I'm honestly surprised they didn't make any of the super speed takedowns involve testicular slaughter, and the game is severely lessened for it. The nut-shot button was unique, just the right amount of silly, fit into the tone of the game so well, and made going on rampages so much more fun than your standard GPA rampage, because there was more to do to interact with you enemies than just shoot people who stumble when hit and eventually fall over dead or ragdoll.

Really I just wish that Saint's Row the Third had more DLC, or they make an expansion or sequel more like it than IV, because I frankly just enjoyed that one much more than SR IV. Not that IV is bad at all, it's just not III

I gotta co-sign Yahtzee's ambivalence to Johnny Gat. I do not get the SR series' fixation on him. I'll probably still pick this up eventually, though.

I'm interested in this, but I'm willing to wait until it drops down to 10 bucks.

I think it's mostly due to his longevity. I believe it's just him and the Boss who've made it all the way since game one.

Was it worth $20? Nope. Was it worth the $5 I got it for due to a sale glitch at Gamestop? Oh hell yes! (pun intended)

I, too, played as Mitt Romney in the Saints Row games.

I'll see what I can do. I might have some screenshots laying around somewhere.

I played Gat out of hell and all I could keep saying to myself was that this is what Painkiller would be like a new one was to be made.

I also thought that it was still a bold, ball's to the wall adventure with all the fun and charm that has almost been heat blasted off of the face of my beloved games industry.

Though he wasn't in SR3 or 4, Dex is in the new game. He's not looking so great though. :D Best part about it is that you get to exact revenge on him. Over and over and over and over...

Gat out of Hell was a mixed bag for me. In descending order, my fave SR games are 4, 3, 2, and 1, but GooH put the brakes on all of the qualities that made me love the series more with each iteration. Except for the first game, the stories and the interactions between the characters were the series' greatest assets. Both of those are missing in GooH. Even playing co-op, there's no real-time interaction between Gat and Kinzie.

Despite the fact that GooH tossed out my favorite thing about Saints Row, the gameplay was still solid, and was just as much fun as SR4 (I know a lot of people slag the series for introducing superpowers, but I thought they were brilliant). The map was small, and yet quite interesting. My only gripe is the overuse of red, but you can't really create a hell without all of the lava and fire. I simply have problems focusing on the red/hot end of the color spectrum, so my complaint is nothing more than a personal issue related to my quirky biology.

For me, the gameplay was enhanced by the ability to play as Gat or Kinzie, my two favorite characters in the SR universe. If you seek out all of their commentaries, you learn some really funny distinctions between the two. For example, when Gat looks at one of the strip clubs, he comments about not wanting to know what goes on inside. When Kinzie looks at the exact same club, she says that she must remember to visit the place after they save the president. Loved that!

Lastly, I thought the game was a whole lot of fun playing co-op, but pretty damn hollow without someone else to play with. In earlier games, you could play solo and still feel like part of a team (in fact, I PREFER solo play in 3 and 4). Now, without all of the interaction between characters, playing solo felt far too isolating, and without a story to hold it together, the experience was like playing an explosive game of solitaire: blowing shit up was fun, but nobody else appreciated your effort or shared your joy of winning.

If I were to be perfectly honest, GooH is a game that I probably wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't another slice of Saints Row. It's for the die-hard fans, not anybody unfamiliar with (or on-the-fence about) the series.

Here she is, it's my character from SR3 but it wasn't hard to redo in SR4.

I liked it.

I've seen more than a few hells in videogames, but I think GooH did it pretty well.

Even when not playing the Boss, Volition does good in letting you play male or female, which makes me pretty happy. Moreso because they play identically.

Kinda wish there was a strip club, though. If there is one, I never found it. I mean I know it might be ... not that great, but still.

Damn, that's actually an important detail for getting wrong, thank you for giving the correction.

Steelport is something I really disliked about SR3 (bland, badly designed, repetitive, ugh, I could write a lot more if I wasn't writing a simple forum reply), and made me hesitant about buying SRIV (the game was good enough to compensate), it's good to know the city is different for Gat.

While I don't care for Gat all that much Kinzie Kensington was for me one of the most enjoyable characters in Saints Row the third.

I don't see the good stuff about the main hero as I barely remember what she did. I played a female. Sure she talked and such but that was it. So I'd rather play a character with a store attached to him/her.

I haven't bought this expansion yet and I don't think I will. Kinda got bored of Saints Row the third towards the end.

Ah, very nice, and accurate. Must have taken quite some work to upload that.
