I've got nothing against The King's Speech as it's own movie, but that being said it did have the misfortune of coming out in 2010.

Black Swan called.

Then The Social Network. Inception was great but had almost 0 character development.

About the article, just meh, well i'll take the opportunity to watch Platoon since it's mentioned and I haven't seen it yet. But King's Speech causing manly tears? It's almost a 'feel good' movie. Replace it with Amadeus, that one is dark and full of terrors.
Also any 90's Oscars winners would fit.
