This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Gravity Rush.

As one of the mad people that played this on the vita, its nice to see yahtzee being uncharacteristically forgiving to this mess of a game. And he nails it. The game is a mess, but it manages to be a really charming mess. And even though flinging objects is finicky, its the only other worthwile combat maneuver, so I used it a lot just to inject some fucking variety.

As someone who loves the game and is looking forward to the sequel... Yeah this review was right on the nose, the game is a mess both combatwise and story wise, there's little reason to use anything other than the gravity kick for combat and when it comes to the story it feels half done, it answers none of the questions it starts with and asks a whole lot of new ones.

But it has a certain charm that I can't really explain

I sort of liked the particular lack of plot focus, in a Miyazaki-ish way. It gave a nice contrast, where you have this girl with superpowers who instead of going on an epic quest of self discovery spends most of her time living day by day, meeting random people, and getting into cute little adventures. It reminded me of Kiki's Delivery Service most of all.

And while there was a level of fetishizing, it never got leary in any way. Or maybe it was just because Kat was so endearing that it couldn't take away from her character. It was fun to play a female protagonist in a AAA game who's kinda girly, and not posturing or trying to be a badass.

I agree, I personally loved the way the story was set up.

As for the review, I 100% agree that the combat was f'ing bad. Never really had a problem with the gravity shifting mechanic though.

They should have had it like Psi-Ops's Telekinesis or The Force Unleashed's Force TK. Although the former was better honestly because if I remember correctly about The Force Unleashed, Psi-Ops' TK'd objects would automatically lock on to enemies for you in the direction you were throwing them if there were any enemies, making it seamless and smooth and fun.

Psi-Ops really was so underplayed, it's criminal.

I don't know why but the imp running straight for the main character while saying "I am offended" really got me laughing.

So, to summarize the game, it's a complete mess because it leaves everything up in the air once the credits roll (Pun unintended), but it's worth playing because we'll never see something with this much heart ever again. Does that about sum it up?

Also, I so wish they'd adapt the console controls to the Vita version of the game for us Vita TV users.

Sounds like a game I would enjoy without figuring out [right away] why I'm enjoying it overall...

Other than that, she would make an interesting DLC character in Dive Kick... :p

Definitely going to try this at the weekend. Though i have some passing issues with cosmic vertigo a bit, hopefully the gravity mechanic doesn't mess with it too badfly.

A sequel was announced during the same event as the HD remaster.

I thought the concept sounded neat so I looked up some screenshots.

....yeah, the protagonist does look like a stripper and/or a whore. Like, to the point where I had to check if it was as Koei-Techmo game, but then I realized the breasts weren't quite large enough for a KT title. :P

I'm glad he mentioned one of my biggest issues with the game, the fact that there's really not much reason to actually land on any of these surfaces as opposed to just flying around by changing gravity. That being said, I did spend a lot of time walking around on walls if only because it felt like the right way to do things. As much as I enjoyed the game, I think that if they made it into more of a gravity defying platformer than a "Fly around and kick enemies" style of game, it could have been amazing.

I'm not exactly sure how to force players to use the walls though. Maybe having a reload time on the gravity switching that's long enough that you can't just press R every couple seconds to change your flight directory? With that you'd definitely need to change a lot of the structure of the game, but I think it'd be for the better

I suppose if anyone was going to patent the divekick it would be Konami, if they could be pulled away from the gambling machines for a few minutes.

The sequel was announced at Paris Games Week last year and is due out this year

Y'know, I found it kinda weird how many times Yahtzee brought up Kat's state of dress; one of the things I actually kind of liked about her design is that it never struck me as overly provocative.

Then again, I watch too much anime.

You heartless jerk! I don't know what image you were trying to post here, but did you even once stop to think about what you were doing to Bisqwit? He works his fingers to the bone keeping his website up and running, and because you posted that image here now there isn't enough bandwidth for someone who wants to look at it on his site. You should have just done what everybody else here does and set up your own private server to host all the images you have a passing interest in sharing on a forum somewhere!

Remember everyone, embedding images is stealing! Don't be a thief!

I was going to say, I googled the character afterwards to see if it was as ridiculous as he was making it out to be, and that's it?

I mean it's basically just a dress top with the skirt replaced with shortshorts, a set of leggings, calf-high boots, and a scarf. As far as superhero outfits go, it's actually pretty reasonable.

Though in fairness, I did just dress my entire Xenoblade X team in playboy bunny outfits and ran around fighting dinosaurs in them for an hour or so, so I might just be getting desensitized. (Incidentally, why isn't there a male version of the bunny suit?)

Indeed, it's too bad it never got a sequel. I liked this game, but damn did that cliffhanger ending annoy the hell out of me, it feels like every game nowadays has to have some pointless sequel hook even if it makes no sense.

I think it's more likely he'll review Firewatch or maybe Rainbow Six Siege. He probably won't review SFV given how little content it has combined with Yahtzee's dislike of fighting games.

What was that line about "a homeless person who dresses like a slag" ? Is this some hip new slang I am unfamiliar with? Oh, wait, so it is.

I never really noticed how much of a mess this game is until now, I still love it though. And I totally agree with the odyssey to the end of the universe being the highlight. It has this awesome, otherworldly atmosphere to it.

Slag is an English slang word as far as I know and it's been around for ages.

Not sure how often Yahtzee reads comments but on the off chance he does: With the coming of a new Rock Band and Guitar Hero, instead of ripping on them why not try Rocksmith?

I don't know why...but for some weird reason I want to see the protag do battle with Gravity Man from the Megaman series. (If for no other reason than to see the fustercluck that will develop from gravity being switch seven ways to Sunday.)

I am going to honest here the game was just boring. Now I have played much more terrible games in recent memory but even the box art filled me with a scenes of complete and total pointlessness. The main character is just so dull I started mentally substituting her for other characters that I thought would make the game more fun; my crack squad of A Listers boiled down to Batman, Barney the dinosaur, Michael Jackson and of course Donald Trump; the last one just because I would like to smug satisfaction of smashing him to a wall at mark 4.

At first i was slightly offended when Yahtzee said that only mad people played Gravity Rush on Vita, but then i remembered that i'm currently on oxazepam.
