Why I Love Furries

 Pages PREV 1 2

ya one has to keep in mind that not all furries are into furry porn - just like not all bronies are into brony porn. Still, its basically the same thing. Fans of cartoon animals with human characteristics.

and like the article reads - then its not because people are 'into' horses or tigers. From what I can tell its often more because furries admire aspects of the animals and put that into human form. The strength of a tiger, the fury of a wolf... hell, a lot of sports teams are named by this logic. Ever heard the term "foxy lady" ?? Most cultures have animal-informed

Another thing I've theorized about in my master thesis (I wrote about internet cultures...) is that the notion of a furry character - for the purpose of setting up a fictional setting, since a lot of furries like to RP and write fanfiction about their stuff - makes it easier to accept characters that do not do normal human things.

Its the same logic that informs barbarian orcs - because humans behaving like that, that wouldn't be right, but when its savage orcs... well that's just how orcs tend to be.

So if a furry has a wolf-OC with an enourmous wang - well, if it was a human character we'd be straight into the uncanny valley - but as an obviously nonhuman anthropomorphic one: Then its just a furry wolf with a huge wang.

A gazelle OC with a long slim neck and dainty legs? Would look really weird on a human, but quite ok on a furry gazelle character.

There is of course more to it - but these basics of "why furry?" do IMO explain a lot

It's the sexual aspect of the furry culture that squicks people out. While I realize that subset doesn't represent the furry thing as a whole, they've been visible enough to taint the entire group to those who don't know better or don't care to investigate further.

Well, sure, but are they anywhere near as bad as cloppers?

I wish that I hadn't looked this up. I have no problem with people enjoying a show meant for a younger audience, but sexualizing ponies seems a bit much.

Ya learn something new every day, don'tcha? :3

But yeah...I could have lived a happy life without knowing what the term "clopper" meant, but that got ruined for me back in the fall. xP

I used to think being a furry was such a huge deal when I discovered I was one. Now I'm, for both better and worse, very used to it to the point where the concept is all pretty darn meh for me. I mean, hell, still love the sexy furry art and stories. But that's just another brand of porn and not what I feel being a furry IRL actually is about of course.

But if there's one thing I would LOVE to experience all over again, it would be me first realizing the furry fandom again. I don't know why or how I lost that utter fascination I had with it but I did...

Dear Furries,

My soul is mine and mine alone. Please stop trying to take it with your dead, expressionless eyes.

Jokingly yours,
Raiku

You'll join us sooner or later... Give in. >_>

Redlin5:
Its the endless smiles... Mind you, that's part of the creep factor of FNAF so whatever.

As people? Never really run into that many I would describe as 'unappealing individuals'. Never met a furry who really pushed being a furry onto others. Heck, some of the art that isn't porn is pretty good.

*shrugs*

Keep doing your thing and being responsible, happy adults. Oh and don't let the Furry Force videos make you angry. ;)

And some of the art that is porn is pretty good as well. (But where does one draw the line between art and porn?)

I, for one, am a fan of all sorts of Furry art, especially some of the awesome stuff the artists do with the anatomy.

I remember seeing all the hate furries got on 4chan, which was weird since channers seemed to love anime cat girls and monster girls but if it was a little less human or a little too human then they started foaming at the mouth.

We are quite picky about the animal to human ratio. And the face. Because we are romantics and value proper kissing.

It seems to work fine for them.

In related news, my google search history continues to get weirder.

I am an incredibly furry specimen. Does that mean you love me?? Yayyyyy!!...i wasn't even trying! XD

Ah, an article about furries that isn't just "eww look at what they draw, ew, ew what am I looking at *puke*".
Rare.

Just like any large clearly identifiable subset of humans, it's always going to be easiest for the onlooker to fixate on the loudest and most striking facet.

This is why MLP fans tend to be by and large tarred as bizarre manchildren who marry their bodypillows, Furries equate giant hyperdick porn, Sonic enthusiasts have inane 'donut steel' OCs generated ad nauseum, anime/manga people are pedophiles looking for futanaari and loli all day, DnD players live in their parents basement and spring their repressed fantasies on their friends, and any number of other extreme minority stereotypes.

Identifying something to rally against is an easy way to create unity within YOUR community after all.

The problem with considering one's self a "furry" is the definition is a bit... conflicted. Is it for the people who wear animal costumes? Or lusty for anthro animals? Or just the people who like anthros?

I myself fall into the latter camp, as I just find the notion and design of humanoid animals fascinating.

Of course, there are the nutters who have to ruin it for everyone else... makes it REALLY hard to be a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and make your own OCs with certain assholes (who will go unnamed) out there...

Hear hear, nice article! Most of the furries I've encountered in my days have been some of the kindest, lovable and "fluffy" people I've ever met, and earlier this spring there was another happening that reinforced that image.

No matter what you may think about the immigration issue, this right here is just undeniably heartwarming.

The CSI episode is a work of fiction.

Many other furs also say it's a myth at best. Even Uncle Kage, the Chairman of Anthrocon.
http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2016/feb/04/furry-fandom-subculture-animal-costumes < article about furry and how it is not a fetish.

And there is nothing sexual about furries, that would be yiff, personally i find yiff makes a mockery of the fandom. Saying furry is a fetish is like saying that anime is only about tentacle porn. Many furries, myself included hate the adult stuff.

Also found another article that lists many myths about the fandom. http://www.highlevelgames.ca/blog/5-common-misconceptions-people-have-about-furries?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

The problem with furries is the problem with bronies and the problem with atheists (and I say this as a casual brony myself). The community might be fine, but the internet evangelical branch is so very very cancer. It's always some of the most self-absorbed and annoying parts of the fandom that go and try to push it on others, which gives it a bad rep. Furries have the disadvantage of being around longer than a lot of other such groups, and so their rep has been building for longer.

As an adult, I find the adult stuff very entertaining. Now that I think about it, though... I think that the Furry Culture sort of is like cosplay culture, in that it's about displacement/replacement of reality with a 'better self'. Except most of our costumes are made of ink or just digital art files, worn only on the internet.

But... back to the adult stuff. I think a big part of the reason it's so prominent in furry culture is because of the general "Express yourself" ideology. We don't draw the adult stuff for you - we draw it for ourselves, as an expression of fun and close intimacy, with no desire to obscure it with obtuse symbology or implied insinuations. Sex is fun, and our Superior Selves enjoy it just as much (if not more) than our boring stupid hairless ape selves.

Good article and fairly made points.

Despite this, I have to admit the suits still creep me out.
Not the people inside them (unless they happen to be a creepy person too. every group of every kind has them).
Just the suits.

As skilled as you have to be to make them I just can't leap that hurdle.
Some of the work is very impressive, especially in regard to those who try manage to replicate the appearance of a digitigrade leg and retain a natural looking proportion.

Perhaps it's the bright, cartoonyness of them.
Or the eyes.
Or the fixed smiles.
Yeah, it's probably the expressions.

I might not be a furry myself, but some of my closest friends are, and this article is spot-on. Especially about the warm and fuzzy part: every one I met has been as warm and fuzzy personality-wise as their costumes. Heh, funny thing is I went to a furry con recently to help a friend with her booth, and I realized, I was probably the most screwed-up person there; because at the end of the day, furries are just normal people, even if they might be viewed as weird.

That is really cool. I went to a furry con with my mom and i think she got freaked out by the sexy art. I wonder how i should explain the fact that every fandom, like MLP:FIM,Star Trek,Star Wars,,furry fandom and such have rule 34 and how rule 34 isn't the basis of any fandom. Cause my mom seems to think all furs only draw rule 34,when the fandom is much more than that. I know of some artists in the fandom who won't draw adult stuff.

I can explain why I don't. It's because I've seen the kind of porn members of that group come up with. It may not be the fairest reason but there you go.

As if furry fandom is the only fandom with people who create rule 34,there are some bronies who create rule 34,but does that mean all bronies do that? No it doesn't. There are people who create kirk/picard romances, but does that mean all trekkies do that? No it doesn't. There are some furs who create rule 34,but does that mean all furs do that? No it doesn't. Rule 34,if it exists, there is porn of it, no exceptions. Just try looking for Lord of the rings pics on google without porn by typing lord of the rings porn. Well good luck. Every fandom has people who create rule 34,but it isn't the basis of any fandom.

I know the horrors I've seen and their not being the only ones don't make them any better. It isn't the existence of r34, it's the nature of it.

I think for people not in the fandom when the boyfriend of a friend lights up facebook at night because he was at a con (including pictures taken in public area where this was done) with "They just unfurled 8 feet of Shrek dick!" not exactly things you or your family might be expecting to show up.

I assume this was all because people were drunk and it was after 10:00 PM but I have to say of all the other fandoms I have seen or been part of I have never experienced something like that. I'm not saying adult stuff does not go on after hours at cons, just that it tends not to be as out in the open and broadcast.

You know what I hate about furries? The lack of imagination.

All these furries and all their combined fursuit crafting and deviantart knowledge and yet they always create neon wolves.

I hate neon wolves.

Do a fursuit of a Bobbit worm or a water flea or a goblin shark.

Piecewise:

Well, those wouldn't be fursuits. They would be.... uhrm, chitinsuits for the flea and worm, I suppose?

Wiki informs me the dermis of sharks is composed of "collagenous fibres". Collagenousfibresuits! Rolls off the tongue.

Yeah Seems many who are into anime call anime characters waifus and sometimes have dinner with their waifu and sometimes have a body pillow, yet it's us furries who are the freaks. Makes sense.

Something about dinner with waifu. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/dinner-with-waifu-otaku-dates

Pot kettle black

These "suits" still creep me the Eff out... and this is coming from an artist who's been in that dumb online fandom since `97.

I'd like to compare them to Second Life infact. Is there tons of creativity? Yes. Is there also tons of Uncanny Valley? OH GOD YES.
IOW: the sheer amount of skill it would take, to make these things "Non-Squicking" to most adults ... is beyond that of 99% of the people who do build them

Also the Hyper-Genitals she mentioned.... STOP FREAKING DOING THAT. You're not honoring Doug Winger's memory. It's not even Creative, it's a Freudian cry for help! But other than that, it's a relief most artists in it are so effervescent and aren't nearly as cynical as me I guess otherwise it'd have a completely different PR problem and there wouldn't be ANY advocates like Liana for "all the cuddly people" in it
