Zero Punctuation: Nioh Pages 1 2 NEXT
This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Nioh.
I agree, the Wheelmonks can fuck off. They're worse than the Wheel Skeletons because at least with the skellies you can see them telegraph their spin-into-you attack. >.>
I prefer them over the Raven Tengus; those bastards are fast as hell, can take up damage like a sponge dish out hits with the force of a truck and they have ranged attacks
Don't touch me!* Nioh is a game that keeps going off my radar. Yahtzee bringing up Ninja Gaiden reminds me of how I first tried to play Dark Souls when I was told it was hard. I'll consider trying Nioh if I ever get it for free from whatever yearly console subscription I'm a part of. *That'll only make sense if I still have a Cheetah Avatar....
How about Soulsvania? Or there isn't a good 3D Castlevania game to justify the -vania part. I've got nothing.
Isn't the genre metroidvania or action rpg?
Ok, so did you like it or didn't you?
Wait, an Irish samurai? Now that's more like it! Finally the PS4 has at least one more decent exclusive. Which brings its total up to three.
If it doesn't feature a disembodied voice you can draw gigs of R34 fanart of, then it isn't a Souls clone.
I thought everyone had settled on "Soulslike". It worked for Rogue. Yeah, the game is pretty good, mostly on account of the deep combat full of combos and skills which differentiate it from the Soulsborne series. I do rank it lower than that series indeed though, partly because of the irrelevant story (you're wrong, it's not hard to get, there's just nothing to get), and how repetitive the environments and enemies are. That last one being a much more prominent problem that you didn't bring up, you'll fight the same skeleton samurai and red ogres the entire game. P.S.: That "Elixir Drop Rate Bonus" is completely unnecessary, I never used it and I'm 90% through the game with over 100 elixir sitting unused in my inventory.
That Pornhub analogy was spot on. I could say it hit the spot. A very tightly constructed comparison.
It has more then three IMO, what are the other two you think are "decent"(i'm guessing Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 are the other two).
Insert Fry meme here: Don't know if serious, or subtle double entendre..
It's not a true Dark Souls clone if you're not constantly dying and respawning.
I'm going for a Quagmire-style "giggedy".
Yep, just a bog-standard action RPG. The combat is incredible slow and dodge/defense based than in most other examples, but otherwise, they are simply action RPGs.
Awwwright! | |
No I'll be damned if I ever call Uncharted anything but pretty graphics, mediocre gameplay. The two I'm talking about are Bloodborne and The Last Guardian.
Nioh isn't snapped in half by incredibly overpowered Greatshields. Nioh wins by default.
How about Zeldevilmaysoultroidvania prime?
Not Bloodborne and Yakuza 0? I'd say that despite being on a shorter development cycle, the Yakuza games are a lot tighter and more fun to have around than The Last PS2 Game Ever Released.
No, but the Sloth Talisman reduces next to every boss fight to a trivial obstacle. It was hilarious making historical badasses and legendary monsters move at half speed while I danced around them and inflicted Discord on them with my elemental dual katana and kusarigama. I must say, I actually prefer this to Dark Souls. No matter how many times I died I never felt like it was a bullshit death (the Umi-bozu's arena notwithstanding) and combat was just so varied and fun I never got bored due to the insane combos and adrenaline rush I got out of it. The boss fights in particular are stellar. Level design isn't at grand I suppose, but not having to worry about interconnecting the entire world means they can focus on making the levels unique. It's also nice how a lot of them like Honnouji and Itsukushima are real-world locations and they bring them to life in stunning detail (seriously, I checked out Itsukushima's website and the design in Nioh was nearly a 1-1 recreation). All in all, I find Nioh is the first game to use Dark Souls as a jumping off point but cut out stuff they felt didn't work, give it a different focus and setting, and then add their own innovations to give it an identity of its own. Beat the game, working on NG+, and eagerly awaiting the DLC.
That's the thing, i saw many if not all mechanics used in other games before (hell, bonfires are just checkpoint based save system). What is often described as Soulsy is it's style and atmosphere, the world(building). And dying on every corner, but other games have that, too. From Software just has an incredible craftsmanship, So there games are polished above most, even other AAA, titles. Maybe i played to many games for to long or just remember better most i played.
FFS, I don't CARE about Dark Souls. How does it compare to NINJA GAIDEN? Why is it reviewers keep doing this in their review of this game? Yes, there's a lot of similarities between Nioh and Dark Souls, but I play a Team Ninja game for Ninja Gaiden or at least a game with Ninja Gaidenish combat. If I fucking wanted Dark Souls, I'd play that. Not something else.
1.Because the game promotes itself as Dark Souls in Japan 2. Dark Souls is pretty much the big thing in these types of circles and the Ninja Gaiden series hasn't made a decent in game in years so the name hasn't been in anyone radar in some time
I was drinking something, so when the imp barfing up weapons appeared I made roughly the same sound as he did.
Fine, it's better than Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. There, happy?
True, it hasn't made a decent game in a long while. You'll get no argument from me on that front. Nevertheless, it doesn't discount the masterpieces that were Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden II.
Kind of. | |
Cum on! Did you really have to assk? The only reason I didn't write more because I couldn't erect more sex puns at the moment.
I don't give two shits about Yakuza.
Dear Diary...jackpot.
Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, I kind of like the idea of Samurai Dark Souls. On the other hand, I'm still working my way through the actual souls games(the fume knight can suck it) so I've got a ways to go before I even need to worry about Nioh. Hell, by the time I'm ready to play it, the DLC will probably have dropped, packaged into a GOTY edition and the blacklash wave will have passed.
Hi I just tried to purchase your book in a DRM-free epub version. Could not find any. Cant buy. Too bad :(
I think Last Guardian is very mediocre because of how godawful the A.I. for Trico is. I love Uncharted's gameplay.
For those that want to know a but more about that period and what happened in it, Extra Credits has a very good side project, Extra History.
Not interested at all in Nioh. I'm burned out after Dark Souls III which sucked btw worst PvP of all Dark Souls.
