"Gears of War-2 level" Announcements at GDC

image

Industry insider Geoff Keighley says there will be a blockbuster announcement at this year's GDC.

Geoff Keighley, from GTTV, obviously remembers that last year's keynote speech from Microsoft was the release of Gears Of War 2, and suspects (or knows) that something else is in the pipeline, and let this little Twitter out of the bag:

"Interesting to see Variety expecting no Gears of War-2 level announcements at GDC. They are wrong. Stay tuned."

GDC, if you've been living under a rock, is the Game Developers Conference 2009, which starts off the gaming industry's trade show tour. With luminaries like Peter Molyneux, Satoru Iwata & Hideo Kojima giving keynotes speeches, there's bound to be some of the most exciting gaming news of this year released.

The Escapist has a team on the floor at GDC, so stay tuned - many Bothans shall die to bring you this information (and further coverage)!

Sweet. Hmmm, I'm going to guess maybe... Half-Life (episode?) 3?

If only they'd announce a zombie RTS... if only.

Bet its Gears of War 3....doh!

*dreams of annonuncement*

Gear of War 2 level announcement called a 'blockbuster'? Not quite...
That's even less of an announcement than Sony's new physics gimmick

Hope to get some new Team Ico news, apart from that yaaawn at the GDC.

with any luck we'll hear molyneux apologise for making such a shambles out of the end of Fable 2, and for not making it better than Fable: The Lost Chapters, or it's direct predessor

Far bigger than Gears of War 2.

Thats the problem, its such a low bar, I can't think of anything that would be likely to be on par with it. Kojimas new project? Bigger. Details on Trico? Bigger. The Ps3 price cut? Bigger. The only thing I can think he's reffering to is maybe Fable III.

Let's be fair, here. MGS5, Half Life 3 would be bigger (Half Life more so than Kojima). As much as ICO and SotC were awesome, though, GeoW is an exponentially more popular franchise.

I dream of another jazz jackrabbit announcement.

Well I don't think we are talking about GeoW 3 here, more like new maps. A new map-set announcement is about as low as it gets in the spectrum of announcements, I bet people would be more psyched about the new G-Force game than some petty maps.

You might actually be right about the Team Ico thing. The sad state the gaming culture is in could lead to more publicity for a couple of buggy multiplayer maps than for the potential gem that is the new Team Ico game.

Well, I dunno... you and I and a lot of others here at the Escapist at least don't think Gears is a big deal, but a lot of people do. I'd say it and HL are pretty even in terms of popularity.

Damn the widespread people who didn't play Ico or Shadow of the Collosus. Damn them to hell.

I actually meant what would make more of an impact, be more of a shock. "You mean you are making a sequel to the successful and generic game you made two years ago? Shock horror. Who would have ever guessed?". Its a sort of, nobody didn't see this coming, so its not really major. I can see Call of Duty 7 and Killzone 3 coming, so their announcement won't be major news to me, or I don't think anyone. The other stuff will actually surprise people (everyone will be surprised that Half Life 2 Episode 3 will ever see the light of day.)

And you'll notice I said Kojimas new project, not Metal Gear Solid 5.

Dude guessing the main plot of episode 1 wasnt a very complicated thing to do. Heck 1 year after HL2 or less there was a news about being a new Half Life game named Half Life 2: Aftermath were the plot was Gordon, Barney and Alyx escaping City 17. Very diferent of what might happen in Episode 3, cause theres no plot details on it. The only thing you can guess is that going to find the ship. From there you can deposit your Ep3 plot guess along side the other hundred I have read.

I predicted a massive fetch quest to get the Deus ex Macihina that will retur Eli to life, followed by finding a captured Combine base, hijacking one of their ships, then going to the arctic, followed by the organic part failing in the cold.

Assassins creed 2 mercenaries 3 halo 4 half life 3 tony hawks 20 (pffft I Lost count) Overlord 2 Prey 2 LotR BFME3 Enchanted arms 2

anyways my guess is that it's not gonna be anything very new and original

Episode 3 is the last one. They going to the artic at the start and Eli will stay dead. Bringing him back to live his ruining the ending of Episode 2. Eli is dead and its not coming back. It would be stupid and serve the story no purpose. Eli died cause he knew to much about G-Man so he got the axe so he wouldnt tell us everything about him. Another character that knew too much was Breen and well he got the same fate of Eli Vance.

Half Life 2 Episode 3 wraps up HL2 story arc, so you going to head out to the Borealis at the start of the game and not wander around looking for a way to save a brain raped character.

The vortigaunts have so far been used as walking deus ex machinas twice before, one of which was to bring a character who dies back to life. He will be ressurected, but conveniently forget about the G-Man.

Eli is 100% DEAD his brain got sucked up by a Combine advisor, on the other hand when Alyx got attacked she did not get instant fatal wounds. You can get some serious belly injury and still live for a couple of hours.(Learned that from some Tanrantino movie where some guy gets shot a bunch of times in the belly, and his friend says that it would take hours till he died.)

Any mention of anything remotely like this power before? Any whatsoever? No, so they're just pulling random powers out of the air andgiving them to the Vorts. Any problem the writers need to work around, the Vorts have some new power they've never talked about before that comes in handy and makes it all better.

That may correct, but theres "good" Deus ex machina and bad Deus Machina. Bad you have the example of War of the Worlds and Tk The Andromeda Strain were the plot ends up with in a cheap way. Then theres good like the Vorts rescuing you from G-Man and healing Alyx in which its procedure is nothing more than some sort of advanced surgery, in which makes the story actually go forward.

And again Eli Vance being brought back to live brings nothing to the Story..only removes it. His death contributes to the final stage of Half Life 2 arc story. Now the rebels dont have a strong leader, Alyx will probably spend most of Ep3 in emo stage giving in the end some sort of bad decision like letting the Borealis fall into Combine hands and Gordon not knowing who is the G-Man. Bringing him back would ruin everything and serve the story no purpose questioning you why did they bother killing him in the first place.

So no you aint going to spend Episode 3 looking for a way to make him come back to life. You going to start episode 3 heading to the artic, find Mossman and then destroy the Borealis.

Edit: Again Episode 3 is the last one of HL2 arc. This will happen at the end: 1)The story ends and no more Half Life. 2)The HL2 arc finish and HL3 will be set in a diferent time/place with some connections to what you did in HL2.

That doesn't mean anything - hell, I've already predicted the plot for the first episode, and asked people to bookmark it. Despite the fuss people will make about information we "learn", if you look at the others, you can really pick up what will happen.

Alyx DID NOT DIE! The Vort that find her says it. "The Alyx Vance still lives but not for long".(or something) Eli will stay dead, Alyx survived cause she wasnt dead, near dead in which the Vorts puted her in some sort of stasis, so Gordon and Cecil could go get the Antlion extract to cure her.

You're looking at it as if Episode 3 is the point where they stp wastin geveryones time and advance the actual plot, a stark contrast to every episode up to this one. Valve are taking the view that episodic content is a cop-out - release it at the rate of a full game, but without advancing the plot in a signifigant manner, or introducing new enemies or weapons. I see no reason, since everyonee has been greedily sucking their penis while they do this, for them to suddenly reverse on this.

Sweet. Hmmm, I'm going to guess maybe... Half-Life (episode?) 3?

Brotherofwill:
Hope to get some new Team Ico news, apart from that yaaawn at the GDC.

Ues, but there was also no plot advancement in Episode 1. Thats my point - they haven't done anything. For this to count as an entirely new adventure, Gordon has to be taken away and brought back by an external force for Episode 3 - the way that would work is if he were taken right before a crucial development.

They are probably going to have copies of Duke Nukem: Forever rain down from the ceilings like confetti.

Hmmm...Uh? Episode 3 wont count as a new adventure is just an extent of what you were set to do at the end of Ep.2, that is rescue Mossman and fin the Borealis. So ep3. will likely start with Gordon and Alyx flying to the Artic zone and when they get there they get shot down and have to do the trek on foot, filled with Combine, Zombies, Hunters and maybe those weird grasshoper tanks you see in HL2 inside the citadel.

Edit: Made a search to show you those grasshoper tanks and they dont look anything remotely like grasshopers or tanks heres the pic:

Valve are taking the view that episodic content is a cop-out - release it at the rate of a full game, but without advancing the plot in a signifigant manner, or introducing new enemies or weapons. I see no reason, since everyonee has been greedily sucking their penis while they do this, for them to suddenly reverse on this.

Cause Episode 3 is the last one. See its the last of HL2 story arc. It has been confirmed by Valve itself there will be no episode 4! When you the credits roll in its the last you will see of the HL2 universe. The base of episode 3 plot is already there now we just need to see how its going to be laid out. We wont be stalling time like we did in Ep.2, cause this is the end.

Its just like Star Wars. You had New Hope->Empire Strikes Back->Return of the Jedi. It was in the final chapter that everything wrapped up. SO while probably there wont be much plot in Ep.3 it will be the final part and you will say goodbye to Alyx and company cause you only getting another HL game after 5 or more years.

Ues, but there was also no plot advancement in Episode 1. Thats my point - they haven't done anything. For this to count as an entirely new adventure, Gordon has to be taken away and brought back by an external force for Episode 3 - the way that would work is if he were taken right before a crucial development.

Thats what I just said would be the extent of the game, only without the fetch quest for the mythical Deus ex Machina.

Urr guess you did...But the thing is that Eli is going to stay dead, possibliy we can see Combine use his death as a form of blackmail to make Gordon and Alyx give in the borealis... as in "Do this for us and we will make him comeback", but they lie and get the Borealis kill Alyx and when they are about to execute you G-Man comes and say its time to sleep.

Edit:urg...typos...need..sleep...
