Xbox 360 is Japan's Favorite

image

Well, favorite for consumer satisfaction at least. A recent survey has revealed that Microsoft's console is ahead of the pack in the eyes of the public.

E74, RROD and destroyed disks. Given the catalogue of hardware faults the Xbox 360 seems to have in the west, it may come as a surprise that in Japan, Microsoft topped a recent survey of consumer satisfaction.

The survey was performed by publisher ASCII Media Works and asked both owners and potential buyers to rate consoles based on six categories: value for money, variety of interesting software, quality of visuals, external design, size/weight of console, and number of acquaintances who also owned the console.

The 360 took a massive hit in the 'size/weight' and 'acquaintances' categories, but still managed to come out with 78.3/100, soundly beating rivals Sony and Nintendo, who both scored 70.6/100 for the PS3 and Wii respectively. Handhelds took the middle ground in the poll, with the DS scoring 72/100 and the PSP scoring 73.3/100.

These results are impressive considering Japan has traditionally been seen as Sony and Nintendo territory and Microsoft's sales in Japan are regularly beaten by their rivals. This might mean a shift in fortunes for Microsoft in Japan, or it might just represent a dedicated group of fans.

Oh my various gods. I thought this will never happen.

(Insert comment about the world ending)

The Japanese have been known to be able to fix the RROD with their telekinetic powers, so I'm not surprised the 360 gives them little trouble.

Japan really is backwards land isn't it.

OMG
soon anime will be dead and ALL videogames will be FPS

ALL HAIL THE SOON TO BE OUR ROBOT OVER LORDS..

Japan likes the xbox, cats are chasing dogs up trees, It looks like the end of the world is nigh.

EDIT: It appears someone beat me to this, but I'm keeping it anyway.

Wait, it's a score based on averaging those six values? That doesn't look like customer satisfaction to me, just random stats (they'd have to ask the people how much they actually care about the values, I mean, how important are things like the external design or the number of other people who have one when compared to the game library?).

Yeah, it really shouldn't come as a surprise with all the rpg's being made for it.

Is it really that suprising? The 360's success has come mostly from it's sheer universal appeal, it is suitable for the largest crowd of gamers while the PS3 is aimed at a more hardcore population (due to it's cost and smaller catalogue of games) while the Wii has more of a family/child direction to it (it's good but it may be looked down upon due to it's casual appeal).

It's a matter of function and purpose.

Well seeing as only one person in all of Japan owns a 360 I don't really think this matters.

Its their favorite, they just don't buy it XD

Wait did I read that right?*reads it again* Yes I didand my response is pah. The 360 appeals to jocks its the wii with the universal appeal my friend.

So? They like it, does it matter?

...Many,many,many people liked Ace Combat 6?
I don't know...

Well isn't that interesting.

Perhaps they convert 360's into NesBoxes.

I call bullshit...
both the wii and the ps3 getting the same score, riiiiiight

Alert the press!

Whats nilcypher's phone number!!

What a genius decoy to finally get nil's phone number

Ok, let's get over ourselves and lay off on the Xbox bashing (it's not that bad so get off your highhorse).

The 360 has the widest variety of games and most of us know someone who owns one so I believe it has a greater level of public appeal (not just jocks, although it would include them I guess) while the Wii's line up of games is mostly centred around quizzes and sports/fittness games with the occasional rail shooter (very fun with friends but that's about it) which results in it having a more casual or party appeal.

I thought Japan didn't play favorites.

Guess I was wrong.

Here's a simple statement for you Mal: "Broadest appeal amongst gamers."

If the Wii has universal appeal, why don't I want one?

OMG! Microsoft is better in Japan?! It can't just be the RPGs, or else the DS would be soaring over everything with its "At Least 1 RPG Every Month" philosophy.

And it is.

The DS hit saturation point in japan long time ago. Nintendo revealed long time ago almost 100% sales in Japan.

My god...Do they give a newborn baby a DS as its being born there?

Nearly 100% sales, as in nearly 100% of the population owns a DS? That's like a dream come true for any company...

*applauds Nintendo* Long live their handhelds! As for the consoles, I've never owned a single Nintendo home console. And I'm not likely to until the next console generation.

seems odd. I just read an article last week saying ps3 was number one in Japan, followed by Wii, then 360. The 360 just doesn't seem like it has many games that are known to appeal to Japanese gamers.

Why does the 360 always referred to when talking about fratboys and "jocks"?

That's just horribly, horribly wrong...

No, it's not % of the populous. I'm assuming "sales" is the percentage of DS-es sold versus the number they have produced.

Okay, well either way, that's still quite impressive.

The 100% doesnt mean the whole population...if not in Japan alone the DS would have sold around 120 million units. When they sold around 100 million units. :P

The 100% and saturation means that the console sold to everyone that was going to buy it and more. And that there arent that many DS buyers in Japan left. WHich meant that Nintendo now needs to sell the DS to the rest of the world. WHich they did and right now theres more DS in the USA than in Japan, when Nintendo started to do more marketing for the DS in the USA around 2007 which was around the time that the DS hit the saturation market in Japan.

So you know the numbers from the end of 2007 to 2008 the DS sold in japan something like 5 million units. In the USA betewen 2007-2008 sold around 10 million units.

How many RPG's are 360 exclusives and how many will come for it? I'm sure the number isn't as large as the PS3's list of RPG's.

Those are some impressive numbers, any idea what Nintendo's profits were from the DS alone? Or maybe deficit, even though I doubt that.
