Treyarch: Games Could Still Use More Zombies

With the living dead in everything from first-person shooters to tower defense games, have games been saturated with zombies? Call of Duty dev Treyarch doesn't think so.

People complain about games being full of personality-devoid space marines nowadays, but zombies are just as ubiquitous, and nobody seems to have a problem with that. Dead Rising. Call of Duty. Left 4 Dead. Even PopCap has a game with zombies.

Which begs the question: is this whole zombie games thing starting to beat an (un)dead horse? Are we ever going to reach the point at which people will say: "Enough. No more zombies in my vidyagames. The 'braaaains' thing has gotten old."

For Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch, the answer is a staunch no. Speaking on the Giant Bombcast, Treyarch community lead Josh Olin remarked that he thinks we haven't reached the point at which this industry has had its fill of the living dead.

"Out of fear of showing my zombie nerd-ism I will contend that zombies aren't saturated at all," Olin said. "I could play zombies for the rest of time."

Olin then took the argument that zombie games are overdone one step ahead in order refute it: "People thought that about the World War II genre, right - that that was saturated? And I think that with World at War at least our hope was that we would come out with something that was new and different that people haven't been used to playing before."

I've never been too crazy about the zombie thing, but what say you guys? Have you had enough of zombies, or are you still hungry for braaaaaaaaaains?

CoD:WaWs Nazi Zombies mode was the best part of the game. And Left 4 Dead, Halo 3, and the general awesomeness of Zombies show that Zombies can live forever! Well, live as a shambling corpse.

I dunno I do like my brains.
Not a fan of WWII FPS games though anymore. That dead horse is nothing more than pulp on the floor.

Yes.

Games + Zombies = Bestsellers for a reason.

Well zombies have been done in many different ways.

Space marines always tend to have the same lame soldier personality. So they seem boring and dull.

Well, except the actual Space Marines. They're still awesome.

Depends on the space marines. :P But that's for another thread.

Too many WW2 games, too many zombie games, too many space marine games. Lots of people would prefer a different take on things for their FPS games.

Of course, we do get FPS games like Bioshock and Half-Life, which give us that something different. Perhaps more studios need to "open their minds" a bit, unless the zombies have already eaten them.

Well I think the Zombie genre is perfect for a new twist or two. But it is by no means saturated. The genre is still throwing out things like Left 4 Dead. If zombie games are becoming stale then it's the fault of the game, and not of the enemy.

Zombies = cool

Nazi Zombies = Unexplainably beautiful!

zombies = kewl to shoot
space marines = boring to play
zombie space marines = needs to be done

I find zombies are just a way of disguising the bad AI. As soon as the AI gets good enough there won't be as much zombie games.

I still want a realisticalish zombie game, a cross between L4D and the sims where you have to eat, sleep and basically survive while fighting off a city full of zombies. Fun.

They need a full game of Nazi Zombies. Make a storyline and make it ridiculous.

great idea!

Its always fun to survive as long as possible against zombies in a small two floor house with three other friends. And earning cash by shooting zombies and using said cash to buy more weapons to kill more zombies. It's always really addictive especially with friends. You get to die together.

YAAAAAYYY!!!!

I think they missed the point. These "personality-devoid-space marines" are usually the protaganist and his friends/squad/love-interest ([cough]Army of Two[/cough]). You're meant to connect with the main character, but when his life goals consist of being able to lift buses and having hourly snacks of face, you just don't care.
Zombies are meant to be personality-devoid. They're never more than fodder for you to slaughter.

There aren't enough zombie games, if you ask me. I, too, eagerly await the perfect zombie apocalypse simulator. Something between L4D and RE, with some resource management and perhaps a refinement of The Thing's morale system.

One little nitpick, though. Zombies eat flesh. Curse you, Dan O'Bannon.

I made a poll about this and I still feel zombies are the past. Alien infectious micro parasites are the way of the future, mutating and reshapin human corspes into hideous alien monsters is so awesome.

More zombies.. yes.. sounds very good. I should caveat this a little: Zombie RPG; or something with replay value... please?

There's a zombie on your Game(lawn)
There's a zombie on your Game(lawn)
We really want zombies on the Games(lawn)

I know your type: tall, dark, and dead...(8)

i always will like more zombies on my game

Wow, I agree with Treyarch about something.

Seriously though, where is the grand epic MMORPG with zombies? Who wouldn't love to combine the massive scale of WoW with the survival horror of the original Resident Evil games, with a healthy dose of Fallout 3?

Zombies are amazing, and it's a surprise we haven't seen them in more games. Why has their been no undead Pokemon? The Sims are all dead, if you play it right. Why aren't they reanimated?
Until someone comes out with an undead Civil War game, I shall embrace the continuous flow of zombie games. Besides, aren't we oversaturated with aliens and marines? Dead Space, Gears of War, Halo, Ratchet and Clank, even... aliens and warfare within the past century probably take up 95% of the FPS market (I'm not accusing R&C of being a FPS), so it's no wonder that games embracing something different get so much hype and attention.

More zombie games please. I think the whole apocalypse thing really hasn't been done enough yet, as far as i'm concerned they can ride the zombie cash cow till it dies and i'll still want more.

zombies/aliens/robots, its all interchangeable i guess...brrraiiiiiinnssss

BBRRAIIIINNNSSSSS!!!

Oh, I'm sorry that's my T-virus acting up.

meh. they are just saying that as an excuss to use zombies in the next cod game they do. its all a diversion from the horrible treatment of the cod series they give.

Zombies.... not really. Sure, they can set the mood in a game, but zombies as a main attraction is rarely done all that well. I felt L4D was one of these delightful exceptions to the rule.

But slapping zombies carelessly into a game usually just make the game worse. Case in point: Thief-series. I though those games were supposed to be about sneaking around and stealing stuff and all that. Then the first zombie came along and I simply stared at my monitor for almost a minute before deciding I want none of that. I mean, whose bright idea was that supposed to be, zombies in a medieval-stylish steampunk/fantasyish environment in a game meant to be about 'steal all you can'??

I ended up cheating the games. Zombie levels? Nope, don't exist....

Gimme a break about the zombies, game developers. If you think about zombies for the next year, just don't. Please?

At least the zombies are aware of what they are lacking....
And they won't find many on Xbox Live...

I don't know...I'm sick killing zombies...I don't enjoy L4D much anymore, Dead Rising got old after I earned the infinity mode, which sucked, and Nazi Zombies was mediocre, imo.

Seriously, WTF! Why wasn't infinity mode, well...infinite? I don't want constantly draining health!

Hey suprise! Zombies are awesome!

Jeez, really Treyarch? You needed to tell us that?

actually you can resurrect your sims (at least in the first game) by winning rock - paper - scissors against the grim reaper

Zombies are in a boom period at the moment, and I refute the idea that we need more as he's clearly hanging his Zombie-phile credntials out for all to see. They're currently quite oversaturated but there are a limited number of enemies that can crop up repeatedly without eyebrows being raised:

Nazis
Zombies
Monsters
Aliens

But knock out too many games with Islamic militants (or add a recognisable ethnicity to your creatures) and questions begin to be asked. Killing other humans within games these days is becoming somewhat taboo unless it's a war game, even games with an element of separation: sci-fi, fantasy, are now being called into question. It's another arguement for another time whether this is right or not but we'll continue to see consistently high levels of one of the big four until the issue is settled...

Anyone else find the irony in Treyarch claiming a particular genre can't be overdone?

Zombies at least haven't been done as often as World War II games have been, so it's refreshing that we have games like Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising. I'm sure, though, once we have Medal of Honor: Zombie Front 4 we'll all be wishing for some World War II games to break the monotony.

My feelings captured so perfectly in song...

I'm still loving the zombie apocalypse and i don't think i will get bored for a while.
