Studio Ghibli Talks DS Game Project

Studio Ghibli Talks DS Game Project

Professor Layton developers Level-5 have to be pretty happy to have legendary anime creators Studio Ghibli working on the cutscenes for their new DS game. But why is it taking so damn long?

Announced last September, Ninokuni is a fantasy RPG developed by Professor Layton and Dark Cloud creators Level-5 in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, the much-loved animation studio responsible for movies like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Apparently Ghibli's only responsible for about 15 minutes of animated cutscenes that'll appear in the final game - so why has it taken them ten months to produce it?

Because Studio Ghibli never half-asses anything, that's why. "When Ghibli has its entire staff working on a project, they can produce about five minutes' worth of theater-quality animation a month," Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki said in an interview with Famitsu transcribed by 1UP. "I wasn't planning for this to take longer than three months, at worst! But that's the way it always happens. Ghibli always works at that theater-level of quality."

The partnership came as a surprise to many, considering studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has been a vocal critic of videogames. Indeed, Suzuki recalled that the studio has been approached many times in the past to do videogame work, but has always turned down offers. Why make an exception for Level-5, then? Timing is everything.

"The entirety of Ghibli was free of work at just that moment," Naoya Fujimaki, a composer who works with both Ghibli and Level-5, said. "Miyazaki may say he hates games, but being a businessman, Suzuki isn't going to just let his staff play around all day."

So he works them for ten months to produce 15 minutes of cutscenes. Man. Check out the Ninokuni trailer here to get a taste of the products of their labor.

When I saw the headline, all I could think was "TOTORO GAME, TOTORO GAME! FINALLY A F'ING TOTORO GAME!"

Now I'm sad.

Miyazaki hates videogames, but loves cartoons. Not sure how he rationalizes that to himself.

Oh dear... I sincerely hate Professor Layton and games of that type. Just seemed massivley over-hyped.

Apparently the reason he hates games is because he let some people make games of Nausicaa and they were so awful he just cursed the entire medium.

Well, the game will be beautiful, that's basically a guarantee.

You'll miss out on the few sparkles of originality in today's gaming industry.

I could see that going very poorly and I understand...

Remember that Nausicaa was big in the 80's... so this would have been Nintendo Era...

They probably had you killing tons of random crap for basically no reason, it's pretty much in direct philosophical contention with the themes of Nausicaa.

This has got to be the first time I´m actually eager to see these cutscenes. Forget the game.

Hmmm. A Naussica game in RTS form would actually be the kind of thing the world needs. That would be one SWEET RTS.

Naussica - RTS
Porco Roso - Flight Sim (Crimson Skies style)
My Neighbor Totoro - Adventure/Puzzle
Pom Poko - RTS or Tower Defense
Kiki's Delivery Service - Economic Sim (Like Railroads! but only one Train/Witch)
Princess Mononoke - FPS
Spirited Away - Action/Adventure

Sounds awesome but The Another World...ahhh my head, it hurts!

The thing with the lamp on its nose is seriously disturbing me.

Ahh, sounds like that gent who wrote The Watchmen.

Am I the only one being disturbed by the name of the game.

The another world 0.o

Forget cutscenes, Princess Mononoke RPG, wru?

more power to them, I suppose. If you want it done right it's going to take a while ;)

+1 to both lines. We grammar nazis must Unite.

Oh good god yes, yes and more yes - that would be truly great.
If they were done and done well then I'd want to try the Nausicaa and the Mononoke ones the most.

I 'dunno. Naussica the RTS is definitely one of my top two, but the other top pick for me would be the Pom Poko tower defense. Lines of construction workers and building equipment being stopped by raccoon "towers" that use their enchanted scrotums to attack the builders... All in a Miyazaki style cute look.

Also, a DS pet game would be nice. Raise yourself a pet Totoro, and rub his belly with the stylus to cause a Totoro Smilegasm (like in the movie). A pet Catbus could be fun too.

Onyx Oblivion:

Huh? Why is it guaranteed? Sure you can count on the 15 minutes of cutscenes to look good, but other than that you have nothing to go on right now.

not a zaar:

That's kinda what I meant. The cutscenes.

Note to self: Describe in greater detail the things that go through your head.

You had me at "Ghibli."

Ah, the Alan Moore trauma. Plus, he's also had to deal with the Macekre of Nausicaa (no matter how hard I try, I can't quite forget Warriors of the Wind), so I'll understand if he's reticent about letting others touch his work...

Once again, thank all that is good and decent for John Lasseter.

Right now, I'm considering removing you from my friends list just so I can add you all over again. BEST. LIBRARY. EVER. XD

And Castle in the Sky could include a little bit of everything... flight sim, shooter, adventure/puzzle, action RPG, platformer... it's a gold mine.
