Thailand Closes Gaming Sites After Boy's Suicide

Thailand's Criminal Court has ordered 72 online gaming and gambling websites to shut down following the death of a 12-year-old boy who committed suicide after his father banned him from playing videogames.

The Court ordered the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology to close down the 72 sites because they were "encouraging people to place online bets or hooking them on computer games," according to a report by the Bangkok Post. Suchart Wong-anadchai of the Department of Special Investigation said internet service providers caught offering access to online gambling would face a fine and jail term, and also have their ISP license revoked.

The court order follows the suicide of 12-year-old Pongsathorn Wattanabenjasopha, who jumped from the sixth-floor balcony of his school after his father took his videogames away. After examining his mobile phone, police said the boy had sent numerous emails to friends complaining about being grounded and warning, "Tomorrow is my last day." Thai officials criticized the parents for cutting the boy off gaming completely, saying, "For children addicted to gaming, the most effective approach is not to ban games but to regulate the time spent gaming."

Rajanagarindra Child and Adolescent Mental Health Institute Director Bundit Sornpaisarn claimed that children addicted to videogames who have an "aggressive mentality" are more likely to commit suicide than others and said parents should use "positive communications" when dealing with addicted children. Parents need to control their emotions, he said, and listen to their children's views in order to "bring positive responses."

While harsh, the government's reaction to Pongsathorn's suicide isn't entirely surprising. In August 2008, the Thai government described videogames as a "time-bomb [that] has already exploded" and urged retailers to pull Grand Theft Auto IV off the shelves after a teenager claimed he murdered a taxi driver while imitating the game.

Hmm... I wonder how many more people will commit suicide after the Thai government blocks these sites?

Damn. No more cheap eBay deals...

This. Seems incredibly counter-intuitive to me.

"Hey, banning games made this kid kill himself. Let's ban all gaming websites and see what happens."

So, the government of Thailand is going to wipe out every potentially suicidal online gamer all at once by making all of them suicidal at the same time?
. . .
*facepalm*

...and that's a highly inappropriate picture. Is it bad that I chuckled (at the choice of picture, not the boys death; that's tragic)?

This a totally reasonable reaction.

Good thing they have started to create sane laws.

^this is exactly what I thought.

An idea struck me. Make a game of the boy falling to his death. Of course he'd fall from a very tall building, and the objective is to miss the cushion at the bottom to stop the boy falling from his death, nets outside the windows and not hitting buildings around you and aiming for the concrete.

I'm a horrible person.

I certainly liked the picture. But then again, I'm a twisted person.

...it's where the screenshot's from. You can just choose not to open your parachute-fin thing at the end.

Did anyone figure out what games in particular this kid was addicted to?

"Well a boy killed himself..
BLAME THE VIDEOGAMES!!!" The kid was probably mentally ill for all we know, or just depressed. On the other side of the coin, The parents must have really messed up down the line. I love Video Games, but they aren't worth dieing over.

That was the first thing that entered my mind upon reading this.

Holy crap, did they actually say something right?

Seriously, that's exactly what they should have done with the kid! Treat a "video game addiction" just like any other addiction and slowly wear it out.

All of you guys are going around, only reading the first sentence of the first paragraph and instantly thinking "Oh, some kid killed himself, they're blaming video games!" when they're actually speaking reasonably here!

Though I must admit, the reaction to this does seem counter-intuitive...

Oh it's YOU! Sorry Mr. Reaper, you seem to have changed your avatar, it's messed me up! But now I see clearly, it is of course the Master of Sarcasm at work!

You really should have announced this avatar change, think of how many others are left in bewilderment!

Clever.

Alright, point made - sarcasm is difficult to detect over text.

...Unless you're not trying to make that point.
In which case the point is made anyway.

My thought exactly. Whose idea was this?

Not sure who's dumber. The kid or the government.

The reaction, while extreme, isn't that suprising.

The Dept. of Population Control?

I wonder if they will stop making school mandatory if a bunch of kids committed suicide in protest...

Or if they will free some criminals who threaten to commit suicide...

Because anytime someone dies we just have to remove whatever was involved in their death, no matter how unreasonable it might be.

The words that spring to mind are "pretty fucking stupid, if you ask me."

So which clever guys idea was it to respond to a suicide after removal of video games by mass removal of video games? Clever stuff. Also, its pretty stupid that video games were even discussed at all; the kid was clearly a wacko and the games had little to do with that.

I bet the judge had never even played a video game before and was just relying on the 3rd party opinion of some other guy who has also never played video games before claiming them to be murder simulators or some bollocks like that. Bullshit.

Wait, so one disturbed 12 year old boy kills himself because he hates his parents, who just happened to discipline him by taking away his favorite (and possibly only) free time activity, and Thai loses all gaming...? Wow, so if a crazy nut job escapes from an insane asylum, kills himself on the freeway and leaves a message written in his own feces that he hates the establishment, does this mean Thai will abolish its entire government? Every last person in support of and who instituted this policy should be executed without question. Sorry, but stupidity of this magnitude is a crime and a sin punishable only by death. The world badly needs its garbage taken out.

Im sorry but why is the pic for this article a screen from AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! -- A Reckless Disregard for Gravity ?

And Thailand has just officially gone crazy.

EDIT - Read some posts, im an idiot.

My thoughts exactly. Facepalm indeed, my friend. Facepalm indeed.

Verily, it must have been the vidja games that compelled the muscles in the boy's body to make him step over that edge. Because as we all know, vidja games are the root of all evil in this and any other plane, and are responsible for the death of Jesus Christ, original sin, and Watergate along with other horrific problems up to and including 9/11.

It totally couldn't have been any lingering mental issues the kid could have had.

So, if gamers will commit suicide if things are taken from them... why are they shutting down the sites? Even within their own logic, this makes no sense.

Also, isn't an agressive reaction expected from any child who is grounded/punished?
It is very clear that this child had problems outside of being "addicted" to videogames.

I didn't know that video games invented suicide o.O
Also what Booze Zombie said.
