Rape Games Not Banned in Japan After All

image

It has come to light that despite earlier reports, rape games have not actually been banned in Japan.

The whole thing was made up, says Canned Dogs, which translated the original Tokyo Broadcasting System report. The site claims TBS did an interview with the Ethics Organization of Computer Software, Japan's PC game rating agency, in the wake of the RapeLay scandal but then edited the footage to misrepresent the story. The EOCS then rejected a request for a second TBS interview so the broadcaster just ran with the story it had.

Abel Group Chairman Kanno Hiroyuki, one of the directors of the EOCS, said in his blog that none of the directors were aware of the supposed ban and that the EOCS has simply scheduled a meeting on June 2 to decide how to address the matter. He said he hopes an outright ban won't be necessary, "but tighter regulations is probably something that is unavoidable."

It's also been suggested that the whole thing could be a political ploy engineered by the New Komeito Party, which Kotaku notes is on record as opposing Japan's erotic games industry. Hiroyuki said the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry told a member of the NKP about the planned meeting of the EOCS, who then passed the information on to the TBS; somewhere in the chain, that information was "changed," resulting in the false report.

Canned Dogs quotes an eroge "industry guy" as saying that while nobody in the industry has any real information, an outright ban is extremely unlikely. "If it is really decided that rape games will be regulated we'll definitely at least have till past July to comply," he said. "The used game market will probably still be OK. The EOCS is currently in a situation where they might lose to outside pressure so please help them!"

I knew it. I knew it. It was too good to be true

Good. An outright ban wouldn't solve anything.
How do we answer that cry for help at the end, though?

i can't say that i am really suprised

Sigh, why doesn't Japan just ban rape FULLSTOP!

Yes! I'm so glad that a ban did not come from peer pressure of equal rights group and New York. You cannot be a proponent of free speech if you want things that you don't like banned especially if the content isn't in the country you live in or affects you.

Remember the whole reason we have this mess is because some American thought in his retarded mind that selling Rapelay on amazone would be a good idea. A game that is only sold in Japan and only in that country and is not meant to leave the country's boarders. The problem lies in distribution of an individual going out of their way to try and make a profit in the American market.

If Japan does decide to close the production of H-games related to this content then they should do so on their own reasons and terms and not any other country, nation or ideology.

EDIT:Also remember in Japan violence and gore is looked down upon more than sexual relations of any kind. Ever wonder why you don't see extreme violence games from Japan and if you do they are tame by american standards? There are different priorities in Japan than the country you live in. Americans LOVE their violence and their second amendment(Ya damn right Link would support the second amendment to his grave) but sexual relations are something to not be seen or heard and looked down upon unless the relation has the context of "love". This would also explain why american movies only get close to sex by kissing and heavy petting.

EDIT 2: Ya know let me ask this question because I'm going to put myself out here. Have any of you growing up even played an H-game? Not a game like Rapelay but of the H-game genre? It's overall pretty tame and when I played a couple of them(I was that interested in the Japanese culture both historically and pop culture) and the focus wasn't on the sex but the evolution of the relationship.

Me neither. Banning it would just make people search all the more, and use more questionable means...

Ah, so japan still has some sense after all.

+1 faith in humanity.

OK, somebody get me an AC-130 and direct me to the Diet. I haven't got a clue why the Japanese culture has allowed these games to continue, but erotic computer games are bad altogether, let alone ones involving rape.

I agree, but I still think it's wrong in the first place to ban it.

iv actually played the game.and its just purely for pleasure reasons people.seriously its just really funny.stuff like feeling them up and having fake sex n stuff.seriously its not AS BAD as these things show.

Yeah, but other games in the same genre can go much further in this.

that and it is a big industrie over there to

Yay! Cencorship is never a good idea.

Like they could change anything in the eroge industry anyway. It is huge.

You know what i feel safe that people play games like this, while there playing them I know their not rapeing me

I knew it was too good to be true. If you tell people not to do something they will want to do it regardless.

sorry to say this but Japan has one of the lowest amount of rapes in any country because of these games...

American rapists rape people

There is no such proof of that. In fact Japan has a high rate of failure to report sexual crimes because of its view on women.

It's just a game, there's far worse stuff out there on the internet, especially now I know about the #chans......*shudders*

Rape games banned, rape games not banned...

Does it matter either way? The sick freaks who like this stuff will still find means to get to it either way.

Well I say its just an outlet for some people.

like say if your really angry and you want to play a fighting game to relive said stress.

I personally think its descusting but atleast there raping virtual people... well I wonder what would happen if this was in Doomsday Arcade.

Hooray....

This is a crime against humanity.

Why, Japan? Why? You're already a titan when it comes to the videogame industry, so why must you tarnish your reputation with acts such as this?

Why?

Oddly nobody bothers to read the point that "rape" fantasies are healthy and something both genders are actually into. It's just when people confuse fantasy and reality that it becomes a problem.

Let me be honest, being taken forcibly by an attactive member of your sexual orientation is like the point of a huge percentage of porno fiction out there. Especially the stuff directed AT women, it's just that rather than porn they refer to it as "romance" and instead of
putting a half naked girl on the cover, they put Fabio with his shirt open and a giant bulge in his pants on the cover. The words might be more flowery in places, but it amounts to the same stuff.

"Oh my god, this girl has been kidnapped by pirate Fabio, tied to the mast, and molested by him, secretly loving every second. Gogo girl, I wish I could be her... "

One of the problems with women and the whole idea of "feminism" is that women are probably like 10x more perverted than guys at their worst. The only differance being that they aren't as overt about it unless you know where to look. The feminist movement taking the general attitude (when you get down to it) that men are too immature to handle erotic fantasy, but it's okay for women (this however leads into a whole differant area of discussion).

As I've mentioned in other threads, despite the inclusion of the word "rape" typically these games involve the protaganists fighting in some kind of tournament where part of the reward is to humniliate/sexually enjoy/whatever the loser of the matches. No matter how their personalities might seem otherwise, all of the characters are sadistic pervs who want to be "on top" but secretly don't mind being on the receiving end. Realisitc? Heck no, but then again it's not supposed to be.

So basically, I'm glad this turned out to be a rumor, and I hope Japan takes a hard line against any kind of censorship. I also hope they also start fighting more to bring translated, but otherwise uncensored works to the US.

Truthfully if you can't tell fantasy from reality you have issues that go well beyond anything your going to find in a video game. Also if the idea of "Rapelay" bothers you, go track down some old "Gor" novels (not the most hardcore thing out there, but after the initial trilogy you'll understand what I mean). Gor having spawned it's own RL BDSM subculture, look up "Gorean" sometime.

Then as I've mentioned before, people have ultimatly failed to ban books/stories by guys like The Marquis Desade, and honestly while not the worst guy out there, he's whole levels of sick beyond anything your likely to find in erotic video games, including horror/rape hentai.

That is the point Japan doesn't even have a real organization for women who have been violently assaulted to. In fact Japan until recently didn't even take crimes against women seriously until pressure from the UN in the 90's. To sit there and honestly take Japan's violence stats seriously shows naivety when it is a nation that has shown little regard to women and considers having 40 or so Clinics for women of violent assault to be satisfactory. You tell me how you can tout the rape stats of Japan as fact when even the Gov't of Japan admits their countermeasures to violence against women is not satisfactory?

I'd like to know The Escapist's official position on these "Rape Games".

Whilst you can argue that from the reported rapes, do bare in mind that the Japanese culture is hugely different and it seems likely to me that the 'rape games' have little to do with the trend for low reported rapes in their country. A more likely scenario for me is a combination of increased shame, increased objectivation of women making them more submissive, and a general attitude of 'its not rape'. MAybe I'm wrong, but I don't think a handful of these games would appease the 'urges' of the average rapist.

Historical data of pre-1990's rape stats would probably provide a fair baseline of what affect these games have had.

there is a game about rape? WTF i hate you so much japan

You can have mine: Kill it with fire.

Rapists are scum. Pure and simple - semihuman at best, animals at worst. I've seen their handiwork, and by god, it was the single most horrible thing I've ever seen. A human being destroyed, and yet still alive. I'm sorry, but words cannot accurattely convey my revulsion here.
