Valve Fans Form Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Group

image

A group of angry gamers has commemorated Valve's announcement of a sequel to the hit zombie-killer Left 4 Dead by forming a Steam Group dedicated to boycotting it.

When I heard that Microsoft and Valve had announced Left 4 Dead 2 I said to myself, "Hey, that's cool. A follow-up to a hit videogame is about as surprising as a sunrise but I'm always up for a little more zombie-shootin'." Good news, right?

Not necessarily. It seems lot of people were unhappy about the announcement, which they see as a betrayal of Valve's "promise" to support Left 4 Dead with new content, and over 3000 of them have joined a new Steam Group called L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2), complaining about everything from Valve's lack of commitment to Left 4 Dead to the new game's overly colorful "visual aesthetic" and crappy fiddle music.

The group's manifesto:

  • Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
  • Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
  • The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
  • The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
  • The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
  • L4D2 is too colourful to fit in with L4D1's visual aesthetic
  • The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
  • L4D2's release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
  • The community has lost faith in Valve's former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

Is it really all that bad? Left 4 Dead 2 may be more of an incremental update than an all-out zombie revolution but that's hardly unusual in a sequel and given Valve's track record, producing a follow-up to a major hit game in the span of a single year strikes me as a step in the right direction, not something to complain about. Half-Life 2 came out four-and-a-half years ago and we don't even have a release date for Episode 3 yet!

The L4D2 Boycott group is growing fairly quickly, although it's impossible at this point to say whether that's a sign of widespread discontent or merely that people really like to join online social groups. But if either one sounds like your cup of tea, feel free to join the rage party at steamcommunity.com.

Who honestly didnt see this coming?

Wow, why aren't they gathering to complain about half life 2: episode 3? Getting mad for a game coming out too soon rather than one not coming soon enough?

FoxParadox:

Amen Brother by the time Half Life Episode 3 comes out the Combine will rule the earth.

Loving the Middle Finger L4D symbol though

Idiots. Actual idiots.
Most of that manifesto is either a) untrue or b) negative bullshit.

If they dont like it, THEN DONT BLOODY PLAY IT.

EDIT: Do they not realise that L4D1 was just a test, that valve weren't particularly pleased with?

Screw them, i'll be enjoying the sequel while they moan.

/rant

People always complain over change, On Facebook, in TF2 updates and even the new site layout on here. We'll get over it and move on.

These people obviously don't understand the Left 4 Dead team.

They didn't want to release the original Left 4 Dead. They only did so because they needed more funds. Left 4 Dead 2 will be the true project they originally intended to make.

I'm pretty sure Valve will give a discount to Left 4 Dead owners anyways.

I find the release date funny, November 17, City 17 *nudge*

problem is that they're working on L4D2, not Episode 3!!! fair enough that they do make a sequel, but not so quickly... I'd appreciate it if they made an effort to support their other franchises as well.

Oh wow, the last attempt by Valve's old guard.

It is all rather sad...

I didn't notice that this game is more colorful. Perhaps they mean that it's...in daylight?

And I like the fiddle...

I do agree about how bland the characters looked. I won't say for sure, since we only got a quick glimpse of them, but yeah... it doesn't seem to be the same mismatched team of survival horror stereotypes.

Oooohhh. My. GOD!

Stop complaining! Holy balls, folks, all we know so far is what's shown in about five two-minute videos, and you're finding reason to complain?
IT'S VALVE!! DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY'RE GOING TO SCREW IT UP?!?

/unbridled rage.

Well this group should at least give them something to ponder during development.

Whatever. I understand some of their complaints, but I don't think that the points have a much merit as they're implying.

I'm pumped for L4D2.

This is pathetic.

Oh no, Valve took things people asked for from a game (more weapons, routes, a story apparently), improved the engine, made a better AI director, added new infected, and that may be including the first games campaigns to make the purchase worthwhile, and is combining that all into a game they're releasing without having us wait for three/four/five years like they usually do?

God damn them straight to hell I say!

*goes and buys COD21 and Generic 2009 Baseball Title 53*

What's wrong with a new game with extended content? New enemies? Stop complaining, no one is making you buy or play these games. Look at the bright side, it's not a Guitar Hero franchise.

Get a life, people.

Ok, I'm not usually that blunt but that is all I have to say to these people. Still, at least the internet gives these sorry souls a place to vent their frustrations.

Wasn't Left 4 Dead a test anyway?

  • Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered. True
  • Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release. Probably not true, but I can see why they would think that
  • The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games. Kinda true
  • The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes. They might have a point
  • The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far. Patience, morons
  • L4D2 is too colourful to fit in with L4D1's visual aesthetic. We've seen two levels. Shut up and die
  • The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome. Agreed. Oh god, do I agree.
  • L4D2's release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before. Again, they might have a point
  • The community has lost faith in Valve's former reputation for commitment to their games post-release. Oh please. This will do dick to Valve's rep

I can see where they're coming from, but they're over reacting.

lol fanboys. Making a mountain out of not even a molehill. This is making a mountain out of nothing. This is continental drift.

Just wondering, do you know what boycotting is? That's exactly what they're doing. They're refusing to buy and play L4D2.

I don't care about them though, I intend to play it.

Darkrai:

Thanks for the heads up! :P

Darkrai:

That wasn't really made clear to most of the gaming public.

I'll be ok with L4D2 if it is either a: expansion pack priced, or b: heavily discounted for owners of L4D. I'm thinking b is the better option, since it would allow for a longer game, while not screwing over people who bought L4D expecting a longer shelf life.

While I do like the idea of more improvements to the game such as adding daytime gameplay(remember the dead don't sleep) and of course another zombie. I do feel torn depending when the game is going to be released and if they are losing the whole "movie" part of the game(I still like making jokes when Louis dies first in versus).

So if the game gets released really quickly then I'll be partially upset but that will still be guaged with how many changes they will make such as improvement on multiplayer(gotta change that score system in versus to stop rage quitters) and single player.

Yeah, I must say, I was expecting this to be about the no episode 3 business. Oh well, I'll support them, but just for a different reason.

Whining maggots

"Oh noes the music isn't to our taste WE DONT WANT IT!"

...fuck off.

I'm really trying to be nice but...they're just whiny morons.

They're all going to buy it anyway.

I don't think they're complaining about the fact that it's being released quickly, but that it's being released quickly and that from what has been shown so far this looks like nothing more then the same game with a few new weapons/locales. And considering Valves efforts with TF2 releasing new content/maps I think the community feels that they are effectively charging for content for L4D when they've done the same thing for free with TF2.

Making people pay for what they're used to getting for free is a bad business model and creates a lot of negative publicity. Look at what it's doing for the newspapers.

You smell that? Nerd rage, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of nerd rage at midnight. Smells like.... lulz.

Once this thread peters out, someone should check things in a couple months once the Nerdrage Novelty wears off to see where the group is at. Online petitions, negative activist groups, Spartacus-like "I Quit!" threads - they all tend to have very short lifespan and are very rarely, if ever, effective against their intended target.

Lots of people will buy L4D2 - much more than the people looking to boycott it - and the snap reaction to what appeared to be only minutes of video and bits of E3 gameplay details is extremely premature, even if some of the points are actually arguable.

There's boycotting something based upon a principle set of beliefs, and then there's boycotting something because you have no idea what it is and want an outlet for your anger. Guess which one this is?

You make connections where there are none, that's a physcological(spelling?) disease >.>

There is only one thing to say here: "CRY SOME MORE!!"

All that I've even seen for this game is an announcement that it exists and one teaser trailer. Valve hasn't even finished the game yet. All we have is a trailer and there already condemning it. This is so stupid.

Actually the banjo music playing in the background when a horde comes in L4D2 does really suck and it breaks the immersion, but I'm still gonna get the game :)
