Japanese Eroge Company Renames Rape Games to "Platinum Games" Pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 . . . 17 NEXT | |
U.N. Owen Was Him? Editor Emeritus Posts: 9955 Joined: 20 Dec 2005 | Japanese Eroge Company Renames Rape Games to "Platinum Games" ![]() One Japanese eroge (that is, porno games) company has figured out a clever way to get around the country's impending ban on rape games: Don't call them rape games anymore. Okay, recap time. Are you ready? Back in February, a listing on Amazon.com for a Japanese hentai game called RapeLay - where you play a stalker who rapes and enslaves a mother and her two daughters - caused outrage. After some controversy here in the States, the game's home country of Japan dealt with the controversy on its own, even if the Ethics Organization of Computer Software couldn't seem to make up its mind. When the dust settled, though, it seemed that rape games had been unofficially banned, and the manufacturers thereof now had to do their best in order to adhere to the ban as lightly as they possibly could. Some responded by changing the titles (Gang Raped by the Entire Village ~Girls Covered in Milky Liquid~ became The Trap Set by the Entire Village ~Bodies Covered in Milky Liquid~) without changing the content, and some responded by assuming that the games wouldn't offend our delicate foreign sensibilities if we couldn't access their site. Now, yet another eroge company has tried another tactic - maybe if they don't call them rape games, nobody will notice! PC Game download site BGameBox posted a notice that the categories "ryoujoku" (rape) and "choukyou" (sexual slave training) had been removed from the site as of July 31st. However, as Canned Dogs reports, their (separate) e-mail newsletter says that the games will be rehosted on their site under new categories. The Rape category will be renamed "Platinum" games, while the Sexual Slave Training category is now known as the "Thoroughbred" category. I... don't know about you, but that actually sounds more creepy and demeaning to me, and I didn't know that was possible. Then, of course, there's also the scenario where some poor sap mistakes the Platinum category for something not unlike a "Greatest Hits," and has his mind irrevocably scarred. Though come to think of it, knowing Japan, it might actually be their Greatest Hits category. Nevermind. (Via Kotaku) |

Call me a weak-stomached fool who wants to shut down games because I don't personally like them, but if I were in charge, those 'rape games' would be banned, all of them, and I'd put out a notice saying, 'If you attempt to replicate said rape simulators, there will be severe consequences and/or lawsuits against your companies.' Creating a rape simulator is never justified no matter what you try and call it. |

If that's allowed in a game, anything should be allowed in a game if the people want it. We, as the developed world, believe censorship is bad, remember? Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it should be banned. What if I was in charge and banned something like...bacon? Or Christianity? They're two things that majority of people in the U.S. want, but I can argue that both of them have a bad affect on people. In summary: do to others as you would have done unto you. Don't censor lest ye be censored.
Calling one of those games a rape simulator is just as accurate as calling CoD:4 a murder simulator. Welcome to the forums, Jack Thompson. P.S.- I've played RapeLay, and I still know nothing about raping women. |

What if said rape simulators were keeping actual rapists off the streets? It's a stretch I know, but I'm just trying to be awkward :) |

That's what I thought too. Boy, this should be good. |

So now we are going to have people be mortified for "false advertisement" due to the name being changed because of the law. It's sad that the industry based on sex is actually the most open and straightforward when it comes to branding itself. But more people complain and blacklist the company for it, causing them possible loss of profit. I'm sure people would also find a way of suing them for corrupting their children's precious little minds... Not that I care for that part. |

This guy has a point (as a matter of fact, in Manhunt you were also killing people for the purposes of filming snuff and violence fetish films). I find it strange that we seem to have this belief that banning something from the media will purge ot from our society (like how we can't have people smoking in films without an 18 rating, imagine a child going to see a movie where no-one smokes and then steps outside the cinema and sees mummy light up a cigarette). |

Get a bunch of of old rich guys who hold the reigns of order flustered enough and you can kiss everything goodbye as they steal things inch by inch trying to make themselves look better than the last guy.... |

Agreed. If you replace the word rape with murder, I think most people here would be responding with outrage at the censorship as opposed to bashing the game developers for creating a game so against your moral upbringing. It's hypocritical. I guess now at least you see from the side of people who are against violence in games. |

Wasn't Clover Studios relaunched as Platinum Studios as well, or am I getting things mixed up?
They're not pushing the games, they're just trying to reach across the line without letting their feet cross it. It's like holding your finger in front of someone face and saying "I'm not touching you." They're not trying to push these games on to others, they're trying to get the industry to leave them alone so they can get back to whatever it is they do.
No they won't. It hasn't happened yet, and it won't happen anytime soon. Whether this it good or bad is up to the individual, however. Oh, by the way, nice choice of pictures, Funk. Now we can all see just what horrible things this company is making us look at. |

It is this kind of narrow minded self righteousness that i hate. What other people play is none of your fucking business. I own rape porn (only movies though, not games) and i have been watching it for years and i would never rape a woman in the real world. The whole notion that playing or watching rape porn increases the likely hood that you will commit a real world rape is also pure and utter bullshit for the same reason why the whole notion that playing violent video games increases your likely hood to murder someone in the real word or steal there cars. Enjoying it in the virtual world does not make you do things in the real one.

o_O? I didn't even know such a cateogory existed. Oh well. People will always find technicalities and loopholes to get around.
Wasn't Manhunt banned in certain countries? Anyway, you do have a point. I guess it comes from the common view of The Escapist that rape is worse than murder because it scars the victim for life, whilst murder doesn't (something I myself don't subscribe to). Also bear in mind that most gamers on this site aren't from Japan, so they've been in countries with murder but not rape in gaming for ages, so upon hearing of rape in games, there would be shock. |

...You've read the forum rules, right? There's no need to flame me just because my opinion is different than yours.
I'm sorry, you lost me at 'I own rape porn.' |

They did, but I'm guessing that they're a developer and not a range of products gives them some leeway. |

Is it bad that I laughed? I don't think I've ever seen less pretension in a game's title.
I respect your opinion, but I have to ask. Are you saying that's how it shouldbe? Or how you'd like it to be? I personally can't see any valid logic in banning something harmless because the content makes you uncomfortable. It's not like these are mainstream on-shelve games. They're simply a different style of porn, and should be treated as such. |

Because if one owns plenty of rape porn and has that as a personal fetish, they can hardly be objective about this event. I mean, if we're going to be judging people based on their reactions to this event... |
