Amazon Predicts PS3 Shortages, Limits Preorders

Amazon.com is limiting preorders of the PS3 Slim to one per household, claiming that the device is already in short supply across the U.S.

That sure didn't take long. Despite being unveiled only two days ago, the 120 GB PlayStation 3 now sits firmly atop Amazon's best-seller list, muscling its way past Wii Sports Resort, Halo 3: ODST and even the venerable Wii itself. So even though it's only officially existed for 48 hours and won't actually be on shelves until September 1, it should come as no great surprise that supply shortages are already being predicted and as a result, Amazon has elected to limit preorders of the console to one per household in the U.S.

"As you may know, the PlayStation 3 120 GB is in great demand," the company said in a message posted on the PS3 preorder site. "In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase [the] PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase one PlayStation 3 120 GB unit."

Preorder limits have also been imposed in the U.K., although their supply situation apparently isn't quite as desperate as ours: In order to ensure that everybody gets a PS3 Slim, Amazon.co.uk is limiting preorders per household to a maximum of five.

Ahhhh, the old Wii tactic, most cunning. Surely demand can't be that much higher, can it?

Edit: I can pre-order up to 5? Man, I'm gonna need more TVs.

i wonder how many people are going to buy this, even if they already have a working Ps3?

So you are saying I cannot order 3 PS3s?

I think some of this demand is the prediction that the PS3 Slim will be a hot holiday item. So people are getting ready to sell on ebay.

On the other hand the PS3 is still a highly rated Blu-Ray player with some of the shortest load times compared to other systems, so there could be demand from people who are finally ready to get a Blu-Ray player. The $299 price point still keeps it competitive in that market.

I know I will get a PS3 eventually, and the reason I didn't previously was due to the high price. Personally, I am waiting until God of War 3 comes out before I buy a PS3, and still hoping they will add the emotion chip back in...

Oh crap, I got a flashback to LoadingReadyRun's "Three PS3s".

Cool, I've always need 5 ps3's for....my death ray
I seriously dobut it will change that many minds at least not to make run out

Huh. Sony might actually found a way to significantly boost their sales in the Western market.

Or it's shenanigans. Both good.

So when do we invade the U.K. and plunder PS3s Viking style?

I must admit it looks pretty damn sweet, I'm thinking about selling my ps3 and buying a slim.
Maybe this will actually push the developers to start caring for their ps3 games...
hopefully.

Just to clarify, is the slim coming out on 9/1 or 9/11? It doesn't really matter perse I just want my dates right.

You may get lucky. I'm sure they'll probably release some special bundle for GoW3. Also there's rumors that they're working on an emulation patch rather than doing hardware again. Or you could always go on ebay and order a PS3 that has the emotion engine in it.

The old supplies-are-short-so-buy-one-quick routine, aye! *wink wink*

I'll bring my longboat!

I think this is all a marketing ploy. "There are only gonna be few, so get one of the couple thousands we release while we keep producing them and keeping them in storehouses!"

WHY THE HELL is the UK version so much more?

Is the video game industry fucking us over a normal thing now? I might have to end up quiting game, even if I don't want to, I really can't keep up with these new prices.

September 1st, yeah I got confused to. Sony would be in deep shit if they released in on 9/11 >_>;

Yeah right, tons of things are released on 9/11. Don't act foolish.

You may have a PS3. But I have 3.

Bah, it'd be another excuse to bash Sony or whatever, a non-American company releasing something on an American tradgedy?!?! PREPOSTEROUS!1

Only five per household? How barbaric! Even if I only put a PS3 in one of my living rooms, I still won't have enough. Whatever am I to put in the other four guest bedrooms? And what are my dozens of maids going to do in their off time? Simply unacceptable.

"per household" = "per eBay power seller"
