Obama Bans Texting While Driving for Federal Employees

President Obama has brought the hammer down on texting-while-driving for all of his employees. His employees just happen to be the entirety of the federal government.

If you work for the U.S. government and you've been enjoying the incredible freedom of text messaging while you drive, those days are now sadly over. President Obama has decreed that no federal employee shall text while driving at work, or while driving a federally-owned vehicle, or even while using a federally-owned cellphone. Sorry mailmen, and the other 4.5 million people this ban will affect.

I can't say that this is a bad thing in any way. Simply reading a text the other day while driving almost made me plow my car though a group of schoolchildren and puppies. Texting is akin to reading or writing a book while driving, something that doesn't seem too safe to me, and with the mounds of young, new drivers out there with cellphones it can only be a matter of time before some type of nationwide ban comes into play.

18 states have already enacted similar texting bans, and for good reason. A study recently concluded that the risk of a crash increases by 23 times if a driver is text messaging, and 515,000 injuries and 5,870 fatalities were the result of distracted driving in the U.S. in 2008. I suppose "text messaging" could be replaced with anything that involves not looking at the road though, including playing video games or watching a movie. For now, I'm still going to play Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box while I drive, until the fascist government takes that from me too.

Sounds fair to me. Laws are there to protect people and this is a good example of one. Plus I don't really want to get my car smashed because some asshole was texting while driving onto my car.

I thought people could already be fired for incompetence?

Good. If I had my way, anyone responsible for a traffic accident due to texting while driving, would be shot on the spot.

You mean, this wasn't illegal already?

I think it's a great move. Texting while driving can't be safe at all!

Logical move on his part.

Aye, that goes provincewide up here in Ontario on...I think it was the 22nd, if it isn't already up...

Good move on his part. He'll keep people safe. Which, last time I heard, is a good thing.

That's like a law preventing you from being a dumbass. About time I say.

Wow, I can't belive that was not illegal already. In Australia you can only use your phone with hands free, and that is arguably distracting enough, texting while driving is just stupid.

Good. Texting while you drive is like shooting a puppy. It's unforgivable.

This.

"txt mssging" while driving has got to be one of the stupidest, most reckless things anyone can do... that doesn't involve weapons at least.

I have no tolerance for people who text an drive.

good job Obama.

I heartily approve of this.

It's already illegal to talk on your cellphone while driving. (for everyone) so ~meh.

HOW DARE HE? I was so shocked from this that I dropped my cellphone to my coffee mug and now there's coffee on my laptop AND car seat!

I don't know how, but this proves that he is Illegal Socialist Nazi Communist Alien! If Americans aren't wary, he might ban peeing on electrical fences next!

Good for him. Why not make it a national law while you're at it Mr. presidente?

About time someone did it. Texting while driving is dangerous.

Actually, this is the first thing he's done that I agree with.

Only in six states. CA, CT, NJ, NY, OR, and WA.

EDIT: and that's only for handheld phones.

I'm already for the banning of texting while driving. Hell, it should be worth several months jail time, rather than being a fine if you're caught.

Thats a good move. Though not everyone will follow it of course. You always have those people who'll still try and do it.

I know, Chairman Obama is delcaring edicts on private citizens to protect 'the people' - how very Communist.

Whatever happened to Freedom of Speech? Now because of The Prophet Barack Hitler Marx Obama, good hard working, God fearing Americans are denied the freedom to speak whilst driving.

Just one step closer to the Muslim Fascist Antichrist Communist Orwellian State.

It's a good step foward, and I hope that he will eventually enforce a nation wide ban with hefty fines for those who do text. I also hope that Australia will follow this example quickly.

I seriously hope this is sarcasim. He hasn't baned using hands free settings, thus has not denied the freedom of speech to anyone. It IS still possible to use your mobile phone provided it has a hands free setting, which I believe all mobile phones today have.

Nimbus:

This is the government, enacting that would fire everyone.

Good job, I'm surprised he didn't make this a national law, God knows it should be.

Good. That's a sensible thing to do.

I was under the impression that it was already illegal actually. But since it wasn't, making it illegal is an excellent step.

Of course it isn't. We all know Obama is a Muslim Nazi Communist Reptilian from the Lambda sector of the Milky Way Galaxy. He's here to brainwash us and soften us up for his Reptilian overlords!!!

Of course it's sarcasm.

This was quite a common sense thing to do. I'm surprised it wasn't banned nationwide already since it's been banned in New York for the past 2-3 years.

Great move on his part, texting while driving is amazingly stupid. Now let's hope it becomes illegal for the same reason drunk driving is.

Yeah, of course it's sarcasm.

I'm not American, so I don't really have any real view on the issue, I was just parodying all the anti-Obama vitriol and the playing of the Amendment Card, that I've seen on the internet whenever Obama tries to do something good for the country.

It seems fairly common sense but there are some people with it lacking. So its a good thing...yay

Sounds fair to me. In Denmark it's illegal, and you can be fined for doing it.

It's also illegal to talk on the cell phone while driving, unless you're using a headset.

Nimbus:

I thought incompetence was a job requirement to be a federal employee.
Edit: I mean that as in a politician. My father is a mailman and he is smart. Once again I am referring to politicians.

ssgt splatter:

Because the townhall people and republicans will come out and complain about how he's destroying our freedom.

Seriously, I don't know, it seems like a perfectly sensible move.
