Star Wars: TOR: Building a City-World From the Bottom Up

Star Wars: TOR: Building a City-World From the Bottom Up

When you make a planet that has essentially been one giant city for thousands of years, where the hell do you start? This latest Star Wars: The Old Republic developer video shows us the building of the capital world of Coruscant.

There are few planets in Star Wars' galaxy far, far away as storied as Coruscant - which is slightly amusing, given that it never once appeared in the original movie trilogy (other than a brief appearance added to the ending of the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi). Since then, though, Coruscant has been featured prominently in all three installments of the prequel trilogy, is central to many of the books in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and so on and so forth.

This, of course, makes perfect sense seeing as how the city-world of Coruscant is the figurative center of the galaxy - it's the capital world for the entire Republic. The Jedi Council convenes here, the Senate is located here, and it is the uber-metropolis to dwarf all other pretenders to the "grandest of cities" throne. Naturally, building such a world is a rather monumental task for the development team at BioWare, particularly since Coruscant hasn't been featured in either of the previous Knights of the Old Republic games. Oh sure, we've had city-planets like Telos and Nar Shaddaa, but neither of those were Coruscant ... nor were they MMOGs.

I've loved all of the Developer Diaries thus far, and this one is no exception. On the other hand, seeing how Coruscant is shaping up makes me sad to think that we probably won't be able to get into one of those little airspeeders and zip around the giant buildings the size of Manhattan. How awesome would that have been?

I can't wait for this game. So much of my life is going to be spent on it.

Ah, I saw that vid when it came out a couple days ago. I usually don't enjoy cities in the slightest, but Coruscant is looking BEAUTIFUL.

And I thought I couldn't want this game any more than I already did. Well, guess what, I do want it even more now! I can't wait until I can walk in Coruscant, heck I think you can spend months discovering all there is to see on Coruscant alone, that's not even counting all the other planets. That was one helluva nerdgasm, I want the releasedate NOW!

That looks really nice. I just hope they can fill such a huge place with enough gimmicks and quests. The slums and the sewers just scream for bounty hunter quests.

that looks pretty cool, the game seems like it will be big and have a big install too

Yeah. Especially for people, who buy the game after it has already been out for some time. Installing about five patches for such a huge game won't really be pleasant.

I've been pronouncing Coruscant wrong this whole time... :[

-125 Nerd Points.

WHY CANT I WATCH THIS AT WORK!?!?

just sent this home so I can have a serious nerdgasm over it in privacy.....

Im playing KotOR at the moment and the more I see of the old republic the more I need my KotOR fix.

its like trying to make breakfast last until your pizza arrives (and the pizza place isnt even open yet)

Tell me about it. I downloaded WoW (for the ten day trial, borrowed from my friend), and I must have sat there for half an hour waiting for the game to download... Had some pizza... finished pizza... game begins patching... go to friends house for a bit... game still patching... nine o'clock... almost done...

dear god, it was about ten oclock before I got any gaming done.

when is this game gna be released?

If I was to break down and play an MMO, this would be the one. Bioware looks to be doing an awesome job.

This game looks good. But will the player be in control of his character or can he only make his character walk around like in World of Warcraft?

If it's the later then i won't buy this game since i hate having to just watch and do nothing as my character beats up whatever i just right clicked on.

You don't control your character in WoW? News to me.

It looked like it was a mix between the pre-CU SWG and KoTOR is some of the vids, not sure exactly how thats going to work, but hey, the game looks great regardless. [and that by itself will bring the WoW-kids in, since all they see is great graphics and not the butchered remains of what was going to be a good D&D spin-off game.]

Ahh man.I was hoping that the video would show that player's could make they're own cities.

I share your pain D8

whimpers

I want to play nowwwwww, they need to stop accepting apps for beta, and start STARTING beta.

And I need to be in it.

Goddamn it, I beta'd SWG! The gold discs!

Well it would be kind of hard building it from the top down wouldn't it?

So what will this game be on? PS3, XBOX, PC? May be a stupid question, but just want to know.

It's a PC game.

MMOs fail on consoles.

This looks like it's going to be epic.

This is both cruel and wonderful at the same time. I would liken it to ordering a steak at a five star restaurant, you know it is going to be good and that you will enjoy it immensely once you get it. Now instead of taking your order and leaving so you can enjoy an appetizer and talk with your dinner guests, the waiter occasionally takes you back to see how the steak is going along, showing you every step in its preparation, going over what seasonings they are using, and of course let you smell the delicious odors before sending you back to your appetizer which now looks stale and unappetizing compared to that culinary confection brewing in the back, and now all you want to do is have some steak. Yes it is nice that the thing we know is going to be great is still fantastic, but now all these other shooters and adventure games just seem like boring filler.

On the bright side Dragon Age: Origins releases in two more days so HOOORAAAY!!!!!!
