What Was Under Those Japanese Bayonetta Ads?

image

Remember those innovative ads for Bayonetta that asked passers-by to strip flyers off the wall to uncover a portrait of the game's heroine? Well, they've already been stripped.

Back on Friday, we wrote about some interesting posters found in Shinjuku Station in Japan advertising Sega's upcoming Bayonetta. The posters featured the game's lead character in a presumably sexy pose, but her body was covered by leaflets advertising a site for the game - to see the figure underneath, people would have to take the fliers.

Well, it's been a bit over a weekend, and the fliers have been completely stripped. That was fast, though not surprising - one has to wonder if this was the work of a few people just taking large bunches of fliers at once, or if multiple people actually took a single piece at a time. It's a rather clever and unique ad campaign, but it's hard to see it being a particularly effective one.

As expected, Bayonetta isn't quite naked, but she's close. I suppose there are advantages over having clothing entirely made out of your magical hair, but think about it: Wouldn't cleaning that stuff be a bitch?

Well, I'd imagine that all the fliers would be gone eventually. I just want to know which fliers were removed first :)

Is this game going to be any good? From what I've seen and heard it doesnt look like its worth the hype.

40/40 in Famitsu, only the twelfth (or thirteenth?) game to do that. Our own Jordan Deam played it at E3 and said it compared favorably to God of War III.

So... make of that what you will.

Y'know, if you squint at her guns (not those guns), they look like the Pyro's Flare Gun from TF2.

From what ive seen the game seems to be in a similar league to Devil May Cry, so I wont hold my breath for it...Might get it if I see it cheap...Like £20

Its like Heavenly Blade

Hey! Look at this chick! Maybe if you look long enough, you won't notice how boring our game is!

I never played Heavenly Blade, but all of these types of games are the same

Obligatory FF12 got a 40/40 score too comment. Japanese scoring is done a little differently to what is the norm in the West but still the score is a nice sign. The team behind the game is an other good sign too. I am mostly curious how the action holds up in the more frantic scenes as a lot seems to be happening at once in the trailers.

So you are saying a game you have never played is bad because a game you also have never played might be bad and reminds you of this game. Maybe its just me but your logic seems off here.

It might be worth knowing what those perfect marks were.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Soulcalibur
3. Vagrant Story
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
5. Nintendogs
6. Final Fantasy XII
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
8. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
9. 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de
10. Dragon Quest IX
11. Monster Hunter Tri
12. Bayonetta

Famitsu's idea of a perfect game seems a bit open to interpretation, I'm not sure their opinion of perfect translates well over to western players. Although their 39/38 scores seem much more consistent.

Dude, are you serious? That's got to be one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard.
Even when you are talking about Games of the Wet & Tomb Raider variety which use their heroines boobs as a selling Point and not about the Devil May Cry/God of War type action Genre thats a terribly biased opinion.I mean you replying to this thread should mean you read it which should mean you know at least a little bit about this Game, which actually by just looking at the Facts like the Japanese Rating or the Gameplay footage released or the Team developing it seems like it'll be a pretty good.Or you just replied without knowing what you were talking about.

YES.

I'm more worried about the itching you would feel from having all of that hair wrapped around your body.

Pretty sure I won't play this, but that 40 seems kinda suspicious for some reason I can't quite fathom

Wait hold up. So she is essentially a female Adonis?

I mean I like women with long hair but having her entire wardrobe be her hair is a tad odd.

I tried it out at GameX. If you're a big fan of spectacle fighters like Devil May Cry and GodHand, you'll enjoy Bayonetta. If you're annoyed by things like running animations or controls that require precise timing, you might want to pass it up.

40/40 in Famitsu? Wow...... Although I can't honestly agree with them, even with their high standards. They gave FF12 a 40/40 (Although I might be wrong) and I thought it bored me to sleep, and went back to FF6.

Seeing as that you most likely know, What was Famitsu's first 40?

IIRC, it was Ocarina of Time.

Over a weekend? It actually took them that long? :P

Anyway, I can't help but wonder what the reaction would be these ads appearing here in the UK. There would be no outraged comments from the tabloid press for starters, I'm sure.

Even if they've given 40/40s to games that fans don't universally like (and lets admit it, it could be the best game in the world and somebody would be bitching about it.) They don't just hand them out, I think we can agree all the games they've given it to have had a high degree of production values and high tier, if debatable, gameplay.

Point being, you might be cautious of the score, but the certainly wouldn't give it to a cheap knockoff like we originally though Bayonetta was going to be, they'd become a laughing stock.

And hay, saint's row copied GTA, and that turned out pretty well. ;)

Two things about a magical hair outfit.

1. cleaning it might be easier than regular clothes, because it's made of chitin (the same stuff as fingernails) and nothing soaks in enough to stain.

2. cleaning it might be easier than regular clothes, because it's MAGICAL!

well like you said its magic so no i would imagine it being quite easy

As much as I like Platinum, because they used to be clover (Okami, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand). But I HATE when games use sex as there primary selling point. It may be effective, but now when I get the game I'll feel like a douche. It's very patronizing, like there saying "we know you'll buy anything with a hot chick on the cover, so we don't have to make the game any good". The game may be good, but thats the kinda message that I get from adds like this.

To put it another way this doesn't want to make me buy it more it makes me want to buy it less.

Obligatory "I loved that game" comment to your obligatory FF12 comment.

Any game that needs sexual ads to sell itself is probably going to be shitty.

You mean every game right? It is just that some companies are terrible at the sexual ads. But they totally try.

Remember having that I bar on tetris sliding nice and deep into the gap between the [] [][] blocks? Man that was one of the dirtiest games of my childhood.

Brawl got the 40/40 but Melee didn't? :(

What the hell is this world coming to? Brawl had [email protected]$#[email protected]$ tripping!

It may be an okay game... If it goes down in price, I may pick it up...

God, why did they give her the face of Sarah Palin? That just kills any attempt at hotness.

I heard this game has a one single same button gameplay mode, and that the better the combos the more butt naked she gets, and another thing, just think if that one button mode is true? What would people do with the other hand, hmmmmmm?

DaxStrife:

Pretend they gave her the face of Tina Fey--that might help.

+++++

As for the advertising campaign, it obviously succeeded. Who cares "if this was the work of a few people just taking large bunches of fliers at once, or if multiple people actually took a single piece at a time"? The point of advertising is to market a product--nothing else. They got all these websites to cover this one poster when they put it up, and now they're all covering it again.

That's two days of coverage all over the internet for the cost of one subway ad and a bunch of post-its. That's the best return on investment in advertising I've seen in a long time.

++++

In any case, I knew this reminded me of something, and it finally hit me:

Besides the fact that they aren't really "handing them out", "when" 40's come shouldn't really be an issue. Their integrity has pretty much been solid from then till now.

Yeah I have to question some their perfect scores. For example, MGS4, although I've not played it myself, it's no secret that the cutsene to gameplay ratio is extremely disproportioned. Now if it were me rating it, I'd be docking a good 10-15 points for that alone. Of course if I was a game reviewer, I'd never give perfect scores 'cause I believe there's always room for improvement no matter how good something seems; so to get a perfect score out of me the game would have to literally knock my socks off.
Also Ocarina of Time, very good game to be sure, but worthy of a perfect score? Well I wouldn't have given it one. The first flaw that comes to mind with that game is the map, did they have to have the incredibly lengthy explanation on the map EVERY BLOODY DUNGEON.

40/40

it made by the same people who did the devil may cry games.

DaxStrife:
God, why did they give her the face of Sarah Palin? That just kills any attempt at hotness.

Ahem.

If only one person took down a flier and read it, it would be more effective than just a banner space, which is what it is now. Not to mention the website coverage it's getting for the weird approach, first to announce it and again after the fliers are gone.

So, anyone checked Ebay for people selling the fliers yet?
