Pandemic Studios Shuts Down

image

After a day of fast-flying rumors, it's been confirmed that Electronic Arts is pulling the plug on Pandemic Studios, laying off roughly 200 employees including the president and CEO.

Rumors that EA planned to shut down Pandemic have been swirling for several days but early this morning the story tightened, as word leaked out that the hammer was coming down today. That rumor has now been confirmed: A "core IP team" from the studio is being transferred to EA's Los Angeles operation, but the bulk of the studio - 200 workers, including CEO Andrew Goldman, President Josh Resnick and Vice President of Product Development Greg Borrud - have been let go.

Despite the closure, the Pandemic brand and franchises will "live on," according to an internal memo written by EA Games Label Senior Vice President Nick Earl. "In the months ahead, we will announce plans for new games based on Pandemic franchises," he wrote. "This type of change can be difficult. But the situation calls for us to act decisively, to take control of our destiny and to run a stronger, more focused development operation. That's how we will continue to make great games in our L.A. studios."

Pandemic was founded in 1998 and acquired by EA in 2007 in the same deal that saw the publisher swallow up BioWare. Unfortunately, the deal didn't work out well for Pandemic; an aborted attempt to produce a game based on The Dark Knight movie eventually resulted in Pandemic's Brisbane studio being "set free" early this year, while the main studio was apparently unable to come up with anything compelling enough to justify its survival during EA's most recent struggles.

The closure will "improve [EA's] cost structure, ensure quality and build schedule integrity for this studio," Earl said in the memo; what it won't do, however, is reassure gamers that the "kinder, gentler" EA we've enjoyed over the past year was anything but a flash in the pan. Closures and layoffs are an unfortunate but unavoidable fact of life, but EA's long history of assimilating studios will no doubt leave a lot of people wondering if the black-hearted publisher we came to know and fear is back with a vengeance.

We here at The Escapist would like to extend our best wishes for the future to everyone at Pandemic who has been affected by the closure.

Crap...and to think I can't remember a thing they've ever made

EDIT: Destroy all Humans 2, Star wars Battlefront, Mercenaries.

Hell, these games were hilarious...shame to see them go

Say, is this a first post?

Pity. They had some interesting, if flawed, games.

WHAT THE

MY BELOVED DARK REIGN 2
MY BELOVED BATTLEZONE 2

I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

They're making fucking SABOTEUR.

HOW CAN YOU SHUT DOWN A COMPANY MAKING A GAME AS BADASS AS THIS, I DO NOT COMPREHEND.

They made Destroy All Humans 2. I fucking love that game. I will remember it always.

They will be missed

Damn EA! Sleep well, Pandemic. You've earned it.

Ah BattleZone 2, that game was sweet. Bombing along in my tank and commanding other units to watch my six, defend my wings and ordering a turret all with only a few keyboard strokes, good times

First no new Timesplitters and now no prospect of new Destroy all Humans(1 and 2 were Classics)

I feel like I just lost a best Friend:(

Good bye, Mercenaries, Battlefront and all others R.I.P.

Does this mean Saboteur is dead?

Mercenaries 2 should have been special given all the fucking about. Hopefully someone else will do the job properly.
SW:Battlefront was pretty special, though.

A moment of silence for a (once) great developer...

Guess that means no Battlefront 3... About the only thing of theirs I liked, but it was GOOD!

Aw they were actually my favorite studio I mean they had destroy all humans 1 & 2 star wars battlefront and they were making saboteur I will miss them always and my best wishes to them.

They were one of my favorite game companies! Mercenaries 1 and 2, Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2, I love these games! How can they shut them down now while they're in the middle of making an awesome game like The Sabetour and what about a possible Star Wars: Battlefront III?!

I have a personal vendetta against EA now. CURSE YOU EA!! *Shakes fist*

Whoa whoa whoa...

Mercenaries?
Destroy all Humans?
Battlefront?

Some of my favourite games!

I don't care that Mercs 2 was under-cooked, I still had fun!

GOD DAMMIT.

Edit: Wait, aren't they getting rid of the Command & Conquer team too?

Malygris:

We fired them for a crappy job, but we will still make and profit the games they came up with!

Do not be alarmed!!!

Awww... Poor ikle Pandemic Studios, getting eaten by the big EA giant.

Sheesh, the loss of money was that bad?

Wait no more stsr wars battlefront,DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was one of those games i played with friends in splitscreen.
I will remember you pandemic, beside my ps2 with battlefront.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

*grabs copies of battlefront and mercenaries and jumps out window*

Weren't they making Battlefront 3? Or was the license passed out to another studio?

WHAT THE FUCK?!!!?

C&C games have been made by EA's own studios for a long long time, they got rid of Westwood years ago or are you talking about something different?

I'm talking about the fact they're laying off their C&C division.

C&C4 will be the last.

This is sad. I was looking forward to Battlefront 3.

Good. The series should have died a long time ago.

TPiddy:

I think it's already done. It is coming out in a few weeks.

Zac_Dai:

Sadly, very true.

Fat Man Spoon:

Westwood Studios got vored and closed by EA and then the Westwooders left EA and founded Petroglyph to escape the moneymilker fiends. Apparently some stayed behind (like Frank Klepacki, who totally sold out).

why is everyone so focused on the studio?? the franchizes are still there, the studio just changed, perhaps the franchizes will be continued but with a different point of view?? who knows, but i never thought of this as "MERCENARIES 3 will never be"

Arbitrary Cidin:

its lucasarts and some other studio, i think the one who did HAZE.
meh, pandemic could never make a sequel as good IMO as their original(s) examples being mercs, battlefront, and Destroy all humans.
so i guess i'm not that surprised.
saboteur will likely be finished and released, though, maybe.

C&C4 was supposed to be the last when they announced it that isn't exactly new.

aww. what about The Saboteur? i know that the game is done, but are they even releasing it? i was never a fan of Mercenaries, but ohh myyy goddd how i loved star wars battlefront. damn shame to let them go. they had a few good games. Farewell old friend. :(

I'm sure you all know about how I feel about capitalism and its effects on the working class (and the gaming industry) by now, so I'm just going to express my thoughts on this with the sound a headcrab zombie makes when on fire.

AHHHHOGOBELPEEEEEAHHHHLKKKJHFBLAGAHHHH!!!

-promptly begins to vomit-
