The Prince Returns in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

It looks like Ubisoft is bringing the good ol' Prince back for another go.

Ubisoft announced today that it is developing Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for release next year. The title will come to both consoles and handhelds in May 2010.

Unfortunately, details are incredibly sparse at the moment. The Forgotten Sands will return to the Sands of Time storyline that was diverged from in the most recent game in the series, titled Prince of Persia, which was first released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in December 2008. The Sands of Time storyline was told through the previous three games: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

The only other details come from Ubisoft's press release, which states: "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand." From this we can only conclude that there will be spikes, lots of spikes, and probably some kind of time manipulation.

The game's official website teases a larger reveal at the upcoming Spike TV Video Game Awards, airing on the night of December 12. As much as I hate to plug the event, rest easy in the knowledge that the trailer will probably be up on the internet shortly afterward.

I'm sure Yahtzee is less-than-enthused about this news.

sounds interesting to me at least

I need to play and beat sands of time trilogy

THOSE BASTARDS! Dammit. Sure, I LOVED that series, but they'll be kicking a dead horse at this point. The first game was deliciously brilliant, the second game was everything I wanted gameplay wise, but fucked up the story, and the third game wrapped everything up into a nice, neat little package. Another game will kill the story (again.)

Blah. I'm obligated as a fan of the trilogy (as it was my first major game series that I played and finished) to buy and play it, but I can't be happy with it on a standard of principle.

Edit: Forgot this. /rant

Aww... So the widdle cutsy wutsy anime cell shaded crap didn't work? Too bad.

/facepalm

So, that's the limit of your imagination, Ubisoft? Disappointed, very disappointed. Oh well, let's wait till 12 December to find out how disappointing the whole thing will be in its fullest. I mean, it can't be more disappointing than a remake? Right?

And I see no mention of a PC release anywhere. Conspiracy I say!

Sounds very interesting, seeing as I could actually identify with the Prince on quite a few levels. Well, this should be a good fix for fans (like moi).

I dunno, they kind of wrapped up the story pretty nicely in the third one... but then that's what it seemed in the first one. Maybe it'll work. Whatever happens I'm sure it'll still be fun.

one game (two if you count the ds version) and they already cut off the new prince. I also feel this will have something to do with the upcomming movie

Only time will tell

And then from Bungie: another Halo! Wait, there is more! Square will be releasing a new Final Fantasy! Woot! What's that? More Metal Gear? Sold! [/snarkiness]
I'm waiting for the news where this turns out that you are playing a completely different character, who bumbles through everything, saved by sheer luck (and not time warping skills) while searching for the original Prince, who in the end has turned out to have a complete new facelift and joined the bad guys, saying, 'F*** this sh**, yo!'

You know, the PC is a platform as well.

Anyway, I'm dubious. SoT: one of my most favourite games. PoP 08: Meh. Continuing a story that didn't even need to be continued after the first game in the trilogy: Double meh.

This.

I don't know about a lot of other people, but I thought the Sands Trilogy was wrapped up nicely and looking forward to how they were going to continue with the new Prince. The ending of the first game (won't spoil) lent itself to a follow up. I'm feel let down that they are ignoring it.

As long as the combat isn't the same as the newest PoP game, i'll play it.
Also cool how there going back the the Sands of Time story line.

Seriously, after an ending like that, they should have made the next game in the series just to finish up the story. If they had to change the art style, gameplay, etc., nobody would have cared. It's not like they would have not bought it because something like the cell shading got removed (I'm personally a fan of cell shading).

Sounds like they're hoping to bounce off the success of the film. Let's hope Jake Gylleblargletharp isn't voicing the Prince.

Also, kind of pissed off that they won't resolve to Ormazd cliffhanger.

Sigh... I really loved the original prince of persia trilogy, but I really thought that new one was just SO awful.

I just hope the Prince in this one is not Nathan Drake in disguise again... "shudders"

I'm very excited - I have high hopes - but also high expectations - it is really a slippery step to continue a closed story - open it up again somehow to torment the poor Prince once again :)

While PoP 08 ( it seems everybody calls it that :) ) wasn't bad - I liked it - it wasn't bad but it was different to the veteran fans of the series - and while I would like it if they one day continued the storyline of it - I am now very happy that we will get another (hopefully) time rewinding, free-form fighting, spike and blade filled traps avoiding great game - if the developers are the same - we may have a great game coming our way ...

But I am a bit afraid of the May 2010 release date - they usually release it at the end of the year ( november or december just like the Assassins Creed games) Its probably because of the movie - but I hope its a seperate story - and not a movie tie in cash cow.

Come on Ubisoft! Don't disappoint us!

That's a shame - the new game was actually very good...and with this announcement they have the potential to ruin the Sands of Time trilogy...

I cannot state the depths of my nerd rage at hearing this.

The one thing the the Sands of Time trilogy desperately needed to dump, more than ANYTHING, was its story. It was ridiculous, nonsensical, and frequently impossibly grating. The first one certainly had it right with there not being much of a plot except "Here is a dick. In order to kill him, you must perform an unbelievably long string of superhuman stunts and solve some puzzles along the way."

The second one flirted with adding some horror elements (monsters that are actually scary), but ultimately was difficult to take seriously, thanks to the ridiculously oversexualized women present in the game. Still, at least it tried to do something other than have a porn-movie-thin plot.

Then the great teabagging of the third game arrived, dissociating any of the morally questionable things the Prince did by blaming the Sands themselves, rather than forcing him to take responsibility for himself (a point the game is curiously quick to point out, though for the reason of trying to flip it around). The Prince finally makes it home to discover that his home has been taken over by a Final Fantasy game, complete with preposterous multistage final boss shaped like a glowing yellow butterfly deeply interested in tentacle sex with Farah, quite possibly the most poorly written female character in the history of video games.

The end of the game, the ultimate solution to this 'The sands are too dangerous to permit in the mortal realm' business, is for the Empress to just depart? What, she could do that? Why didn't she do that at the end, or, God help us, the beginning of Warrior Within, if hanging around would cause so much sturm und drang?

I loved the SOT trilogy as games, but I wish the story, the horribly plot-hole riddled story, would fall into a spiky pit and not rewind itself out.

And to hear this, this horrible, mind-breakingly awful news, right on the heels of the new POP game NOT HAVING AN ENDING WITH ANY CLOSURE, moves me to symphonies of violence. Aching, nine-part symphonies of violence.

I'm re-playing Sands of Time at the moment, and loving it, so I gotta say that I'm stoked for this.

I ignored the most recent game for the tosh that it was, but I loved the original series, so I'm looking forward to see what these "elements" they speak of are :D

Sounds like they're just trying to squeeze as much cash out of this as possible now. But I'm willing to give it time. Maybe it will be something more then hype and hope like most sequels are.

Oh well as most people on this thread agree, the series was wrapped up nicely, in the two thrones, but if they mess up like they did in Warrior within, then perhaps they will make another game to fix it again, so all in all two more games... I don't really see a problem... cos as a gamer, I prefer great new gameplay over story, so I really dont care why I get to play as the good prince again... once I can....

Same goes for that new Jak game which I hope to get soon...

EboMan7x:

The original 2D PoP? Yeah, that was awesome.

They can't really ruin it. It's not like they're going back and changing the original trilogy.

.....Don't get me wrong, I loved the Sands trilogy, but it ended so well I'd hate for them to ruin it by messing up the storyline or baby-fying it like with the last PoP.
Though if it's back to the Sands roots, hoorah!

They're feeding the fans, that's it. It's not even an original idea anymore...

Doesn't mean I won't play it.

I hope its like the 2008 one. Just without the quicktime events. Or the fertile grounds. But the art style was excellent.

I have to love this game's title- its like their admitting that in the last game they forgot what made the last console generation's series so good. I wonder if this will star the old Prince or the new Prince, however, and if Jordan Mechner (created the POP series, wrote and helped developed The Sands of Time) or Corey May (wrote Warrior Within and The Two Thrones, as well as both of the Assassin's Creed titles) has anything to do with it.

The name is ironic for me as Sands of Time is the only 3D Prince of Persia that I bought and didn't immediately forget about.

Wait- so, they're just leaving that ass of a cliffhanger with the new Prince?

Oh, come on, Ubisoft. Look at what you did with Assassins Creed! You'd think they could find the inspiration to build from the new PoP in the same way.

Sigh. Whatever. I liked both the SoT trilogy and the new game. I just wish they would at least bother to resolve the story.

Oh, hey, maybe there'll actually be some sequels now! Good. I've been waiting since 2003 for a sequel. Too bad it took them so long.

Yes, I am aware that, technically, there are sequels. They're just so terrible I refuse to acknowledge them.

Yay, I am just happy theres another Prince of Persia.

the forgotton sands.......seriously i forgot something during the 3 games.

i couldn't have forgotton anything......i can't *twitch* I CAN'T.

What I'd really like to see from Forgotten Sands would be the cel-shaded art of the 2008 game, plus the combat, music, and characterization from the original trilogy. Fortunately, PoP Sands of Time is near the top of my Christmas list, so I'll get to experience it once again.
