Shadow of the Colossus to be Re-Released?

image

According to Japanese retailers, cult PS2 hit Shadow of the Colossus may be seeing a re-release next February as Sony gears up for the release of The Last Guardian.

Fumito Ueda and his Team Ico have been responsible for two of the most beloved games of the last generation: Though 2001's Ico and 2005's Shadow of the Colossus didn't sell in the neighborhood of Modern Warfare 2 (or even Uncharted 2, for that matter) they were critically acclaimed and extremely well-received by the people who did play them - which is why expectations for Ueda's third game The Last Guardian are so high.

It seems that Sony may be trying to capitalize on the love for the previous Team Ico games - specifically Shadow of the Colossus, which significantly outsold its predecessor - in promoting The Last Guardian. A poster at the Team Ico Gamers blog noted that "all major Japanese retailers" were listing Wanda and the Colossus (Best Edition) - that is, the Japanese title of SotC - for release on the PS2 on February 4th, 2010.

Said listing has been taken down from at least one of the sites, but it remains up on the other one. If true, it would stand to reason that Sony would be trying to drum up interest in Guardian by re-releasing the previous Ueda games so that gamers can remember how fantastic they were.

For the moment, this appears to be only in Japan - the game doesn't even have a release date yet - but it stands to reason that the company might try something similar in the West. Given that Ico and Colossus were both released in the West before they hit shelves in their native Japan, I see no reason why Guardian wouldn't follow suit. Besides, plenty of gamers never even played Colossus, so it'd be nice to give them another shot at it.

But you know what would be even better, Sony? Learn from your God of War division and give us a HD-remastered compilation of Ico and SotC on Blu-Ray. I'd pick that up in a heartbeat, no joke.

I have been wanting this to happen for the longest time! I would pick it up faster than a heartbeat!

Only for the PS2? I'm afraid my Slim won't be able to play it, and I've never actually played Ico or SotC... so a blu-ray remake would be way better actually!

OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!! ...Excuse me while I go away somewhere and scream in happiness like the little fanboy I am

Luckily I still have my PS2! This is epic! Now if I could just find Ico!

My PS2 broke so I never had a chance to play Shadow of the Colossus amongst a few other PS2 classics (like Jak 3, the sequel to my favorite PS2 game ever).

Anyway if an HD re-release were to come out I'd be all over that.

I'll join you... There are not many games worth getting this excited over, but these games are.

YEAH! I LOVE THIS GAME

The mere thought of seeing SotC in high def without the slowdown made my hair stand on end.

sounds really cool but I don't own a PS3. I wonder if the last guardian will even compare to the greatness of shadow of the colossus.

Man if they would only release it for PS3 like the GoW pack, that'd be so awesome.

Great. Now people will have another excuse to not shut up about this game.

Judging from how awesome Shadow of the Colossus was I'd say that Last Guardian would have to be the best game ever made to live up to that hype.

Damn it if only I had a ps2. I will pray for a remastered edition.

Why the pessimism? Rejoice, for the lord of all videogames is being re-released!

What? Nintendo is reissuing Ocarina of Time again? I've heard nothing about this!

Re-releasing a game one console generation after the original? Seems like profit whoring to me. Re-release any of the greats from the SNES era on the PS3 and I'll jump on board the Sony fanboy bandwagon right away.

Oh, I see what you did there.

PS2? Good job I have the original PS3 with backwards compatibility. Yay!

Wait a sec... Did I read that right... They are re-releasing it on the PS2? What exactly is the point of that? At the very least port it to the PS3, and while you are at it, update the textures for HD, and maybe tweak a couple of the fights and that would be killer.

I was not a huge fan SotC, but I still respect it. Re-releasing it on the PS2 seems like a slap in the face to the current gen market... Just my .02 though.

Er.

There... might be problems with that.

Yea, considering Nintendo's patents. But those bastards obviously aren't going to do anything with them, except maybe put the original game on virtual console. But I assume Sony or Microsoft could get the rights to re-release games originally by Konami or Square. Chrono Trigger would be a great one.

If they did a God of War collection thing, I'd be willing to pay a full $60 for that easy. Tracking down a copy of Ico is absolute balls, and I'm trying to phase out my PS2 as much as possible anyway. It's a bit of a hassle having both consoles, and I can't be bothered to rig up the PS2 so its old games don't get much playing time.

I wonder though, could you transfer your memory from a PS2 memory card to the PS3 and regain your save file on the PS3 collection? Someone give this a shot with God of War and tell me how it goes

Could you possibly be trying to imply that Nintendo aren't a happy-go-lucky bunch who'll allow their back catalog onto rival consoles? How pessimetic... ;)

I would love a remastered HD version of both Team Ico games, a la God Of War Collection. I've tried playing both of them on the PS2 but SotC crapped out due to a disc scratch and I got distracted away from Ico by newer, shinier things.

I still have my mint condition box :D

Okay, now THAT is the one thing that would get me to buy a PS3.

Actually... I'm going home for Christmas in a few days, and guess what I've got still kicking around there? My PS2 and a copy of Ico. I think it's time for a replay.

EDIT: I just had a look on eBay - seems copies of Ico like mine, with the limited edition art cards included, are going for anything up to £50. As much as I'd rather not, I think finances dictate that it might be time to get my sell on.

F*CK YES!

Now pull another God of War Collection and give us remastered versions of Ico+Shadow of the Colossus on one bluray! I never had a chance to finish Ico, and I can't find a copy for a reasonable price anywhere!

That would look so cool on a PS3!

Normally I don't like jumping on "woo, great news" bandwagons, but, WOO! Great News!

Seriously, Shadow of the Colossus is as good as everyone says it is. I can't think of anything to complain about with that game.

I never played either game, and it would be possible but tough to play at home on PS2. So YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

I already have mine. Awesome, awesome game.

I wish they'd release it on the 360... I hate console exclusives, and I don't have a PS2 or PS3.

This.

I would love to actually get the chance to play them. I was only ever aware of their existence but never got to play them in full glory.
