Famitsu Astrologer Predicts He Will Be Vague in 2010

image

The in-house astrologer for Japanese videogame mag, Famitsu, spouted vague prophecies about what the videogame industry will face in 2010.

Yes, Famitsu has an astrologer on staff. Savor that fact for a moment. Why don't we have a professional prognosticator here at The Escapist? Oh right, because astrology isn't real. We might as well have a staff phrenologist.

Despite their lack of efficacy, Yusho Fukuda's horoscopes are actually syndicated in many Japanese newspapers and magazines. He offered Famitsu some choice predictions for the video game industry in 2010 for their end of the year issue. In keeping with the grand tradition of astrology, his prophecies are extremely vague and difficult to prove or discredit. Some of his predictions are quoted below, as translated by 1up:

2010 will be a much livelier year for the industry than this one. A game will come out in the first half of the year that will touch off a major boom, and another game will follow upon that in the second half. In April, a new game will attract attention for a gameplay system that involves 'changing' or 'trading' things. It'll become very popular on the Internet in particular.

Hmm, a game about trading or changing things on the internet. That could mean a new broswer MMOG or maybe an Animal Crossing-type title. Or maybe, any freaking game ever made? I mean, every game has to do with changing things, doesn't it?

Fukuda offers some more brain-busters about specific companies:

Nintendo will continue to expand their sales with their stable way of doing business. They will be pushing a variety of popular titles, as well as their sequels. They will have major releases in the spring and fall, and the autumn game will receive the most attention as Nintendo will be spending the summertime advertising it.

Wow, sequels and popular titles? Nintendo should hire this guy! How did he know that Mario Galaxy 2 was coming out?

Microsoft will avoid direct competition with other companies, instead expanding its sales at its own pace. Their most successful title this year will involve adventuring around the world, or examining a map and doing something based off that.

Which could mean anything from an RPG to an FPS. Way to cover your bases, Fukuda!

The darker prophecies are actually the most specific:

As we go into May, a great deal of games will be delayed, and a number of problems within the industry will make things difficult for smaller businesses. There will be friction between publishers in September due to issues related to distribution. We may see a price drop in hardware or software in November.

Predicting an industry-wide price drop before the Holiday season for what will then be a 5 year old console generation? Genius!

Why, that guy certainly is talented!

How do the planets/stars tell you about f*cking video and computer games, exactly?

And really? 2010 a livelier year? I have no idea how he got that impression; all that's happened this year was an en masse exodus of nearly everything to next year.

I'd be grinning like that if I could spout total bullshit once in a while and (likely) be well-paid for it.

I already slap my friend for beliving in horoscopes. Now I feel like I have to slap all of the workers at Famitsu who belive this.

OT: He does a great job of pointing out the obvious though. Thank you, Fukuda. We couldn't have seen this coming without you.[/sarcasm]

wow, this news is poking a lot of fun at Famitsu :P

Why doesn't The Escapist have some really random preacher or something anyways? That would be awesome! XD

I don't get why everyone is like, "Oh shit, he is just pfgjkld;sfgenjkodfjkds, THEMANWITHTHEGLASSES IS AWESOME!". I thought it was pretty cool. Also, astronomy > journalism for a gaming forum.

So....much...cynicism....

It does seem like he has one of the easiest jobs going. Wonder whether he thinks the next Halo will sell well?

The whole reason astrology is inherently flawed can be summarized in a single word:

"Rupert."

Kudo's to the people that get it.

But he uses his talents for evil.

Do you reckon it's a coincidence that he's an astrologer, he's grinning like the Cheshire cat, and his name sounds distinctly like: "Fuck you! Duh!" ?

Please tell me he doesn't get paid for this. But then again, I say that about pretty much anything astrologically-related. Spouting vague messages that nobody understands doesn't make you wise, it makes you a fortune-cookie maker or possibly the Wachowski Brothers.

Laugh of the day, people will believe anything.

What a retard. Anybody who believes in astrology must be one. Astrology (or any future predicting methods) works by being so fucking vague that anything could happen and you'd still be right, or stating things that are so obvious that they just need to look to common sense. You'd have to be a real idiot to believe this guy's real.

My god! We must gather the G-Force, only a bunch of guinea pigs can stop him now!

The title just makes the whole article

My brain has died alittle at this. Newspapers printing the crap was bad enough, without a game magazine doing one too.

Astrology is not Astronomy.

And yes, The Man With The Glasses is awesome, but I didn't see any references to him until you brought it up.

Actually I am a regular browser of this site, and this is the first reference to TGWTG I have ever seen.

Yeah, anyone can do this... Here are my gaming predictions for 2010:

Xbox 360s will still RRoD.
PS3s will still have no games.
And Wiis will still waggle.

Who do I see to get that kinda job? Would love to get paid to spout generic, nondescript bullterds once a month.....

I post whenever I have something worth saying. YOu obviously just spew pointless words onto the internet. And I am a Scottish Bastard thank you very much.

A charming, tolerant attitude was displayed in this article towards an esoteric belief that is more spread and widely believed worldwide than even Christianity.

I'm sorry, my sarcasm is dripping out of my face. Excuse me, but when did The Escapist become an atheists-only opinion page? I thought that this was a gaming forum where religion and politics were discussed, not put on a pedestal and stabbed around. A bit of journalistic objectivity would be preferable, thank you very much.

The attacks you make on astrology are grounded in false ideas of what it actually is. Anyone who thinks it is chiefly or even secondarily a predictive or fatalistic system has no idea what real astrology is about. Secondly, anyone who thinks that newspaper horoscopes are actually written by astrologers, is a fool.

Horoscopes are treated by most media hierarchies as something that you let the freelancer beginner do. They do not hire anyone with knowledge of the real ancient art form that is understanding the planets. That is why they usually end up being vague, useless things that are laughed at by atheists and real astrologers alike. Famitsu's is no exception, especially since this was obviously done with tongue firmly in cheek.

Show some respect, Tito, and read about something before you spread misinformation.

Oh, I'm sorry Mister Wallace McGotry. And, yes, I do spew pointless words :D

Actually, going on how particles know where they are, it makes sense for the universe to be in tune with itself, and for the stars to forecast the future.

It also makes sense for Aus censors to ban games based on how a 2month old would react to it, for Germany to make I.T. security software illegal to stop hackers, for people to spend a small fortune to buy a shiny rock (a little rubber ball that lights up when you bounce it I can understand, but for a rock smaller than a thumbnail? Around 1/4 the size actually..), for The Escapist to have top notch journalism involving astrology, and for The Escapist members to actually argue about whether or not rape is a bad thing.

First lesson in life. It doesn't really make sense, just go with it. =P

.....o-key.....

You have issues. For starters, if you're going to bitch about previous posts in the thread, read the fucking thread.

Also, I only heard about "Nostalgia Critic" about 3 days ago, and given I've been here over a year now, I doubt 'all anyone here talks about is That Guy With The Glasses' is actually true.

A sequel to every game that didn't have one this year is getting one in 2010 so that's pretty much all of them... pretty much anyone could have predicted that ok lets see, I believe Wow's new expansion will be out in the first half of the year and Halo Reach will be out in September... those alone will be huge hits ignoring the flood of other titles including The new Pokemon remakes (Heart Gold and Soul Silver) hence the "trading and changing"?

Either way it's all so vauge it's like he looked at a sheet of release dates and was told what games would sell well...

Silva:
Show some respect, Tito, and read about something before you spread misinformation.

Please enlighten me, Silva. What does astrology mean to you? Last I checked, astrology is not a religion, so I don't believe I was mocking anyone's deeply held beliefs. I merely said that astrology was not real and that many scientists believe it is a pseudoscience. Yes, I understand that astrology is a study of the planet's movements and how it relates to human behavior. Do I believe that it has any truth to it? No, but I understand that some people might.

Silva:

I think we're actually in agreement. I don't think astrology is predictive in any way either.
