Shoot 8-Bit Zombies in Left 4 Dead "De-Make" Today

Gamers with twitchy zombie-killing trigger fingers and a taste for all things retro might want to grab a buddy for this co-op "de-make" of Left 4 Dead a la the NES.

We first learned about Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead back in November as the work of one Eric Ruth, a 28-year-old independent game designer with a passion for retro flair. He intends to use the "Pixel Force" name to release a series of free retro versions of modern games.

Now up is Left 4 Dead (not L4D2, L4D1) which features all four original survivors, all four original campaigns, two levels of difficulty and as much faithfulness to the original as you can get with the technological limitations of the NES. The above video - from the Death Toll campaign - shows off how the game plays, from the Infected (watch out for those Hunters, Louis!) to the... well, okay, just the Infected, really.

You can download Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead for free from sites like Strategy Informer. Will it someday show up on Steam? Who knows - maybe it'll be packaged in with Left 4 Dead 3.

I saw this on the News Feed a few weeks back and it looked funny, I hoping it's as fun to play.

Looks interesting, but a bit tedious.

It might play differently though.

I'll pick it up next time I decide to have a retro gaming session.

Tempting to get it, but seeing as my computer could not handle it I will merely keep an eye out for the opinions of those who have played it.

Upon closer inspection of the video I found that 8-bit Louis looks a bit like he has glasses when seen from the side.

I might possibly get it but I'm too focused on other things

Seems poretty cool. Will need to remember that for when I am next bored and need something to do, lol

I downloaded it for the hell of it. I'll report if it's any fun!

My thoughts exactly!

Genius. That's all I can say. Nice 8-bit graphics.

The Witch in pixel-mode is just as creepy as always.

I guess it looks like a bit of fun... maybe I'll play it later.

Thats pretty slick.

That would be great as a port for phones and handhelds. Left4Dead2Go!

Jesus, that threw me straight back to being 8 and staying up all night playing Double Dragon. Nice work!

Louis startled the witch!

This makes me smile, 8-bit gaming is finally BACK baby!

Played it, hated it within the hour.

Hit detection is the wonkiest I've seen in years, and the zombies like to get stuck to you where you can't shoot them and they'll cause damage over and over again until you die.

I dread what Advanced mode is like.....

Good effort, though not something I'd play. Nice music score too.

i wonder what AVGN would have to say about this? XD

This is awesome, from a L4D player's point of view. The 8-bit sound effects are funny, especially the dying music.

Looks quite neat in a Golden Axe / streets of rage / alien breed / etcetera kind of way, but maybe nothing so special or novel.
Plus I bet penny to pound this is either on PSN / XBLA / PC download, rather than being a proper NES ROM... or it's one for a similar *but different* system.

Reason? Pure yellows. NES _does not_ do them.

I've already played it. It is really fun. Grief your friends :D
