Venezuelan President Bashes Gaming

image

Hugo Chávez, the fiercly anti-capitalist president of Venezuela, has turned his sights onto the 'poison' that is gaming.

Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela and enemy of capitalism, has lashed out at gaming today. Speaking on his talk show Aló Presidente, he said: "Those games they call 'PlayStation' are poison ... Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, 'you've got to find Chavez to kill him.'" While Chávez specifically names the PlayStation, it seems reasonable to assume that he meant it to encompass all games.

Chávez - and the Venezuelan government's - opposition to videogames is long standing, with accusations that Pandemic Studio's Mercenaries 2 was propaganda to prepare the way for an invasion of the country, and a ban on violent games recently coming into effect the country. According to Chávez, videogames have a significant negative influence, even beyond their nasty habit of apparently encouraging people to kill him: "[Games] promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol so they can sell them." The 'they' in that sentence would refer to us capitalists by the way.

In the grand scheme of things, hating videogames is one the least bad things that Chávez has done, limiting free speech and constantly attacking the West being markedly worse, but it's just another thing to add to the list of reasons to not like him all that much.

I think rather than ban videogames, the solution would be to ban Hugo Chavez from Venezuela.

Funny thing is, his country is going to hell with all of the murder and violence and he's trying to blame anything that isn't bad government.

Even images on a screen.

I think he's just lashing out because he's failing in Tropico 3.

It's his loss!.

Yeah it was fun to play Mercs 2 in Venezuela even if most of the game was crap, but I guess Pandemic was looking for an overseas country that no one cared about and set their game in it.

I'm just saying.

Ummm, "Venezulan?"
Also, I doubt they really play videogames there anyway. Hugo is just a clown.

Does Atkinson translate into Chavez in some dialect of Venezuelan Spanish?

That's too harsh.

"Rebellion against oppression" anyone? You can never have enough revolutions.

Who knew Chavez was an Xbot.

Damn pandemic for giving away our invasion plans involving a large tattooed Swedish guy with a Mohawk and a pocket full of C4.

That's why they where secretly killed, or "Shut Down" as they say in the development community.

This is Venezuela though so odds are revolution is on the horizon. Who knows the next leader may have player mercs 2 and choose to implement a similar plan

though i can understand that he is not quite fond of western civilization in general and the u.s. and its vasals especially for generation-long invading, misusing, exploiting and overthowing southamerican countries, that is just nuts. i think it's save to say that the effect of banning the games on the country will be somewhere arround the neighborhood of ze-ro^^

You left out the grappling hook gun so he can steal helicopters, that part is integral to the plan.

You know, I used to like Chavez, but now I see that he's just a spaz and a wannabe dictator. He's not even good at controlling his country, and he blames everything on everybody else that he can.

That is one of the most ellaborate and greatest excuses ive ever heard.
How long until Atkinson uses this one?

God Damn It Shut Up!!!

We've still got that Black guy on stand by.

Lets hope not, a modern day Venezuela that looks like mercs 2 is not a good thing.

Wait. So I don't really hate Venezuelans? I... don't want to take part in an invasion of Venezuela. Oh my god, I've been brainwashed! Those evil videogames, planting those evil thoughts inside my hea- Oh god he's such an idiot. How do these people exist? Damn it, we should just test people to see if they would have survived when natural selection was still important.

Well they could've always taken the IW approach and set their game in the US, and then I would like to hear what people think when you get to attack the White House with a nuclear bunker buster.

Considering not many (if any) games use Venezuela as a setting means Pandemic was trying to be original. And it worked even though the game wasn't too good.

EDIT: Plus there's this: "Venezuela, one of the most dangerous and crime-ridden nations on the planet..........." - a line from an Escapist Article about Venezuela banning violent games.

Pefect setting for Mercs 2 don't you think?

Oh, you mean "no one cared about" as in "no one should get offended". Sorry then, my bad.

Him, Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson should host a talk show toghether, and it should be called "Did he REALLY just say that?!?!?!?!"

Anyone can be offened by anything even if someone is just talking about the weather. So how about we limit the "no one cares about" to the people playing the game if were're going to get nit picky.

Time to get rid of Atkinson. In fact it's been that time for ages..........

He has to say these crazy things to stay in power. If he suddenly becomes sane and amicable towards the US, he's not going to last very long in his country.

You know, the real propaganda is nothing like mercs 2, but the way the western media portrays Chavez to the rest of the world.

Paranoid moron.

In the words of King Philip of Span, "Why don't you just shut up?"

Did he call in an air-strike?

Freakin fanboys!! Always bashin on the Playstation.

Yeah, I'll believe him when he sorts out his criminal, murder infested country. In fact that's probably why Mercs 2 was set there.

Can someone say paranoid?

Pfft...Mercenaries 2 wasn't an attack on anything.

It was too damn glitchy to be able to be so deep.

Well, Chavez is already a crazy dictator, so this doesn't surprise me in the least. Maybe he could try building his people skills in Tropico.
