China Bans Avatar

Whatever. This coming from a country that refused to show a speech by Obama about them stopping censorship is predictable.

Piracy saves the day!

Good to see China has some taste in movies.

hahahahahaha, tibet is the na'avi.

It's a bit arrogant of China to assume only they know the pain of forced relocation, but that doesn't mean they are lying about it.

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about it. Something will give in China though. They can't keep controlling the people like they are forever surely.

exactly what i was thinking. i was like "uh..wtf? how short sighted and ignorant are you?" if i remember right, someone correct me if im wrong, wasn't it based off of the american indians being relocated?

Native Americans. We aren't "Indians" and calling us that is short sighted and ignorant. :P

holy shitttt, when i was typing that out i said "Native americans" in my head, and for some reason it typed that out instead, I feel like such a dumbass now, my previous post now has no credibility at all haha

thank you for correcting me, i sincerely feel bad about that now

No real offense taken, just couldn't resist pointing out the irony in your statement there. :)

there's no freedom in China, a Dictature remains what it is. just look at China's 4000 years History only emperors and Tyrans...

Lol, someone flunked history.

As cool as it is to hate on China (almost as fun as hating on Australia) you just SHATTERED Godwin's law and made a complete tool of yourself.

Good to see China has some taste in movies.

You talking about the government censors or the Chinese journalists' positive reviews?

hermes200:

John Funk:
All the forced removal of old neighbourhoods in China makes us the only earthlings today who can really feel the pain of the Na'vi.

John Funk:
For audiences in other countries, such brutal eviction is something outside their imagining. It could only take place on another planet or in China.

I sorry for you, but... isn't it a bit arrogant to believe these kind of thinks only happened in China?

Yes. Middle Kingdom Syndrome is not the exclusive property of the Chinese government. The citizenry suffer from it as well.

Typical China.

Those bastards are bigger threats to casual living than terrorists are.

Somehow I don't think it is a public outcry that banned the film. I think this another example of the government banning free speech because it is bad propaganda.

This "OMG BLOGGER=ARROGANT, CHINA NOT ONLY BAD COUNTRY" banter is out of hand. Yes, other countries have relocated people.

But this article is about the CHINESE government banning a MOVIE because the MOVIE has themes of forced relocation.

This is NOT about the evils of chinese relocation.

Get a grip.

Ah, good for China.

Now if they could just make their food more filling and pull off a proper fire drill.

Forget Avatar; sign me up to the Confucius biopic with Chow Yun-Fat.

I'd be interested in seeing that too, especially since Chow Yun-Fat is awesome.

Yea, Avatar is good. It surprised me, as I thought it'd be rubbish, but it's hardly the pinnacle of cinema, there have been better. Many Chinese people will have seen it already, and from the sound of it, it's made it's mark already. China banning it will only make their people:

1) Search out for cinemas still showing it to see it
2) Think that, perhaps, the Chinese government isn't as good as they think it is.

They'd have been better off not banning it. It'd have made less of an impact that way.

Whistler777:
I personally loved Avatar, and wish people would stop pretending they're their own Siskel and Ebert team and just enjoy modern movies (notice I didn't say film) for the spectacle that they are.

Sorry but I enjoy movies for story not spectacle and the story wasn't that fantastic.

"It could only take place on another planet or in China"
That made me laugh. China is completely backwards.

Yes...Because that puts a positive spin on your government...

Well done China!

And let's not forget about the pirates, unless they screwed themselves by acquiring the 3D version.

It seems to me that there isn't anything that China will misinterpret and then ban :/. I swear they have large problems with insecurity... Censoring Google... You know? This is why Google backed out. The Chinese leaders have problems.

Whistler777:
I think it's interesting that the Chinese would draw that parallel. As anyone would expect, their government can't have anyone out there thinking that their rulers may be faulty.

I personally loved Avatar, and wish people would stop pretending they're their own Siskel and Ebert team and just enjoy modern movies (notice I didn't say film) for the spectacle that they are.

To me it just says how desperate they are that they're seeing messages in AVATAR of all things. China is enjoying great economic growth and their leaders are willing to do whatever is possible to do it. But they're also completly sacrificing their cultural identity to do so. Also, the things the government over there has done are HORRENDOUS.

Confuscious believed in service to the state, no big suprise a film about him is big with the government.

I think the Chinese government were the only people to pick up on that theme

I'm fairly sure none of the Chinese population who could afford to see the film would have noticed it if the government hadn't gone and POINTED. IT. OUT.

Bravo, China, you fail at authoritarian suppression

Crazy people. Still won't put a dent in Avatar's media bandwagon, thats for sure.

Well, as stupid as this is, it's not a big deal. For every person living in China there are at least a thousand pirated DVDs: if someone in China wants to watch Avatar, they'll find a way. Plus, a movie about Confucius starring Chow-Yun-Fat doesn't sound half-bad.

Chinese Government: "Damnation! A movie is making people realize we've been screwing them over! BAN IT!"

gmaverick019:

Disaster Button:
I'm pretty sure more people than just China have suffered from forced relocation. Really its just a bit short sighted for one blogger to claim that only the Chinese can identify with forced relocation.

Wouldn't the government not want to ban it anyway to prevent drawing even more attention and try and at least deny the parallels, even if they are there.

exactly what i was thinking. i was like "uh..wtf? how short sighted and ignorant are you?" if i remember right, someone correct me if im wrong, wasn't it based off of the american indians being relocated?

and i agree on part two, banning it is just bringing even more attention to it, since its not a worldwide sighting now and once again china is frowned upon

I agree with the sentiment that the poor Chinese are not the only people on Earth who know what it feels liked to be forcibly relocated cough* Palestinians cough* but considering that they are probably going to loose Google their ignorance is understandable.

This doesn't suprise me, China censors anything that they think might cause people to re think the fact that they're being told how to live.

Not very fair, but understandable for the Chinese government anyway.

And let it be known that Hitler was not a socialist and very much a capitalist.

that picture was a little big too much indeed... but many "socialist" regimes are doing the same isn't it? Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ecuador just to name a few...

At least Korea is safe. After all, they don't really care. They just watch.

Ot: Their loss but I can see why.

Funny thing is, the murder of people is not a part of any system this is actually Socialist, funny thing, that.

Of course, I get this feeling you're trolling, so whatever.

Actually, they could more accurately be discribed as "Socialist dictatorships", where the dictatorship part is the problem, not the Socialism.

Also, there is a difference between National Socialism and Socialism.

haha very true, props to you for noticing and pointing it out

*ahem* as a native american...... do you wish you had the cool hair flash drive so you could connect with animals and the land?!?!

odd and random question, just curious.

Once again, China's response to anything that supposedly suggests to their people that life isn't absolutely hunky-dory (or reminds them that they're living in a vicious police state and life for millions is a gigantic pile of crap) is to ban it outright. Absolutely bloody typical.

Apparently they banned Pochahontas there too. Anyway, I want to hear more about this Confucious movie, that sounds fascinating.

That's sad that the government has to ban a film that scares them, though it's normally against my principal, I support the bootlegging of Avatar by the Chinese. More power to them, screw the movie banning government.
