Rumor: Nintendo To Announce New Platform At GDC

image

An anonymous source in the games industry has leaked that Nintendo plans to announce a new platform at this year's Games Developers Conference in March.

We all know that Nintendo has been working on a successor to the Wii. The console was incredibly successful and it pushed gaming into new directions but as we get deeper into this generation, its lack of graphics and processing power are becoming more evident. Rumors have swirled for years that Nintendo was going to release an HD compatable console sooner rather than later. Yesterday, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that they would have to come out with something more robust than just an HD Wii:

If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition -- just making it compatible with high resolution -- will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say, 'Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.'

We may learn about Nintendo's plans as early as this March, as an industry source told Videogamer.com that the Japanese company was planning on announcing it then.

"Just heard a rumour that you may be interested in," the anonymous source said. "Nintendo [is] going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it."

The choice of venue for such an announcement is interesting in itself. One thing the Wii has been criticized for is the lack of good third party games on the console. Perhaps by announcing the new console at the Game Developers Conference instead of at E3 will endear developers to the brand and get them on board making games for the new console earlier than they did with the Wii.

And according to the source, it appears that there is already people working on such games, even though it's unclear if the "devs" mentioned are from Nintendo-controlled studios or third parties.

It is also possible that the "new platform" could be an updated DS. Iwata mentioned both a new DS and a new Wii at an investors Q&A recently, but couldn't elaborate because he was afraid of leaking too much.

"If there were no rival makers in the world, I'd could give examples of the things that we are considering," he said. "However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things we're considering."

I'm kidding

Be intresting to see what this actually is. If the rumours are true...and if it is a successor to the Wii (IF) then it would certainly shake up Sony and Microsoft a little.

I have a feeling it might be a updated DS, or even a new handheld entirely. The DS is already going on its sixth year in market, so we might see one with improved hardware specs, if not better. It also might tie into the new Pokemon games that Iwata mentioned...

Yeah, I wouldn't bet on a new Wii just yet. A new portable system, sure.

I have odd thoughts of a pair of OLED equipped sunglasses and a motion sensitive key-chain type of wiimote, but it's probably way too soon for that.

As long as they ditch the motion controls and keep Virtual Console, I'm in. I was raised on Nintendo, remember?

Lol hypocrite!

Anyway OT:
I have every console of theirs since the snes, the wii was the shittiest over all. Couldn't care for their countless 're-inventing the handheld' attempts so if it's that I will ignore it.

They are way behind with the whole HD thing anyway so that be nice (Brawl / LOZ in HD now please). Less peripherals and more actual games would be nice, and less motion controlling.

Even though there's a little niggling thought in the back of my head that's screaming "WAAAY TOOO SOOON!!!!!! WAAAIT TILLL NEXXXT YEAAAR!!!!!!!" I still want to see if this rumor is actually true, mainly to see if Nintendo is going to go with it's new motion-sensor premise it introduced with the Wii, or if it will go back to it's traditional gaming roots.

Anyway, as long as it's not the VirtuaBoy 2, it's bound to make ridiculous amounts of money.

I have my doubts.

Considering the immense commercial success of the Wii, Nintendo doesn't really need to release a brand new next-gen console, criticisms be damned - they're still making huge amounts of money on it (despite hints of its decline in popularity), so why bother replacing it?

I can understand if their doing a PS3 Slim-esque overhaul of the Wii, but I doubt it'll be a bonafied brand new console.

It's the WiiPhone.

Basically it's an iPhone, except with a Nintendo logo instead of Apple. Also, you don't touch the screen, you point a tiny little wiimote at it.

I don't follow. How am I a hypocrite?

A new either of them would be cool... But the problem is, unless they keep the fancy technology, they can't be backwards compatible... But a processing power upgrade would be nice, I'm getting sick of the Wii's games being bad because they couldn't have too much on there lest they destroy the pathetic processing power. Then again, RE4 is on there, and that's fairly big, and quite pretty...

This is completely laughable. Only the pseudo-analyst Pachter has been repeatedly speculating on a Wii HD and it makes absolutely no sense to do.

I'm not usually one to hurl insults on the internet but this article is incredibly stupid. It is obviously not going to happen even if a anonymous source suggests that they heard a rumour. That is as good a source as any random forum dweller...

If you don't get it, don't worry about it.

Veebwii? Virtual Boy Wii? That would be kind of awesome. You know, something new to bash.

Nah, way too soon for Ninity to release a new console. It will be at least one more year before they make a new console.

It needs to be a new handheld, because the DS is already 6 years old, it's time for completely new handheld harware.

Ok...then.

it'd be nice if it were a wii that did HD, y'know, so it doesn't look garbo on a new TV if playing much other than wii sports
but that's unlikely.

The only thing imaginable is that Nintendo would start going two ways at once: pleasing their original fanbase with one console and the 'casual gaming crowd' with the Wii. This is still pretty unlikely though. I doubt there will be a new console by Nintendo anytime soon. Why should they? The Wii does print money (I figured out how).

Fingers crossed for Puu.

I'm hoping that this unannounced system is more along the lines of a gameboy type thing, you know, with real controllers and some damn fun games with it. And just to justify the target audience it has a few knives sticking out of it, you know, to turn off the famlily friendly nature of it allowing for M rated games to be realesed for it.

Ahhh, one can dream can't he.

Lame. I don't want a fine looking game getting a bunch of pointless gimmicky controls. That's what made hte Wii respectable, it didn't hide its shittiness behind the cover of pretty graphics.

Heres to hoping its named the Pii

Pimppeter2:

Let me guess, with 3.14159265 times the processing power of the current Wii.

Well that would honestly be the shortest recorded console lifespan.

So Nintendo might be the company that kickstarts the next-gen...hmm.

I just hope, whatever form factor it is, Nintendo decides to use up-to-date hardware, not an archaic 68MHz cpu like for the DS, or an updated Broadway chip like the Wii.

A dual ARM Cortex-powered handheld would be pretty rape right now. Even if it were cartridge-based.

I'm going to file this under 'bullshit'. With a Mario game, a Metroid game, the Vitality Sensor and possibly a Zelda game hitting all this year, let alone the likes of Last Story, Zangeki no Reginleiv and the like Nintendo would be insane to announce a new platform now. Plus there's the fact that the Wii still sells mountains! This is nothing more than Internet gossip.

If anything, this will be interesting to see play out, and see what it is. Personally, I'm happy with my 360 and PC.

What they should do is re-release the N64.

"The console was incredibly successful and it pushed gaming into new directions" No And No
We hated our wii waggle(I mean mote) and most of us who bought the thing either did it for the kiddies or stashed it away after a while

This isn't too hard to call. Going by Nintendo's current business model of fighting the flow of technology, which they demonstrated by selling a sixth generation system controlled with a power glove.

My prediction is...

...controlled with a motion sensitive frying pan.

I certainly hope we come away from this retarded little phase of motion control. Although Manhunt 2 was fun I personally hate it.

I hope that their "something new" doesn't include the Vitality Sensor.
I thought that the Wii was in the least need of a replacement, so I'm actually leaning more towards a DS replacement. A new Nintendo handheld, combined with Sony's idiotic devotion to keeping the PSP around for 10 years, will pwn the PSP and bring everyone back to the good old Gameboy-only days (imho, those days were actually not that good).
If it is a replacement for the Wii, it would likely be one of three cases:

1) It's a console that walks the line between casual and hardcore gaming. This would be a huge kick in the sack for MS and Sony, and Nintendo will dominate the gaming market for the rest of my lifetime (*sob* I don't like any of the Nintendo franchises *sob*).
2) It's a bit of a return to the hardcore scene. Very unlikely, because this makes no economic sense. It would take a huge bite out of MS and Sony, and might actually allow the Wii to extend its lifespan to 12 years or more. They could simply offer both consoles, one for the more casual crowd and another for the more dedicated.
3) They go full out for the casual crowd. This could either be a success so huge that Nintendo can now afford to buy Europe (including the citizens and all their posessions), or flop because people don't feel like upgrading from their Wii (I still think they totally should have pulled a bit of MS and made the Wii slightly less durable). Either way, this option won't have a massive impact on MS and Sony.

Just my non-professional analysis :D

Despite their statements to the contrary, Nintendo is pretty much synonymous with re-releasing the same thing with minor upgrades so I wouldn't be shocked by a "new" Wii with a different coloured case, HD support and built in Motion Plus in it's wiimotes. And, just as with Apple, I'm sure it will sell a bajillion units.

Well it's about time Nintendo wizened up and got with the times. I'd love to buy a Nintendo console with hardware comparable to the 360 or PS3. Hell, maybe if they release something with even a little more power than those consoles, Sony and Microsoft will have to get competitive again instead of spouting this, "our console will last a bajillion years" BS.
