Harmonix Requests Licenses For Rap and R&B Tracks

image

Harmonix has requested use of the licenses of four hip hop and rap tracks which don't seem to fit into Rock Band.

The Royalty Network is a website which aims to educate members of the music industry on copyright laws and how to protect their intellectual property. As part of this service, it reports when requests have been filed by companies to use the licenses of songs in their catalogue. In the January report, the Royalty Network lists requests for the following four songs by Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band:

Activision has released games like DJ Hero attempting to cash in on the hip hop and house music genres in the music rhythm genre of games, but so far the Harmonix has stuck with rock and roll. In fact, Royalty Network also mentions that DJ Hero 2 has requested the use "I Will Be Here" by Tiesto Benny Benassi Remix (McDonald/Mitchell /Verwest ,Waakop).

Are these license requests the first hint that Harmonix is entering the fray and making a Hip Hop Band?

Gangsta Rap Crew?

Grillz & Bitchez?

Phat Beat Posse?

We could go on all day...

So they're tired of using music then?

Hmmmm.

*head explodes*

Ah well, it was good mediocre while it lasted.

Caliostro:
So they're tired of using music then?

IT would appear so ><

Oh-kay.

*Pauses*

Can't think of anything to say.

Apart from it's clear that I won't be buying this game.

Um wow? they running out of Rock Bands to ruin already?

Ante Up is the shit, I love that song. But that's not gonna save this game.

Unless they go all out and make it as thug/gansta/whiggerlicious as possible. The only thing that ever, EVER made Guitar Hero appealing was the Air Guitar. When you whip out your air guitar, you look like a silly fool and everyone likes a little of that. When you air rap, you look like a giant douche and everyone quietly resents you.

I do have a couple suggestions:
-The star-power meter should be re-engineered and called the Hate-o-meter - when they hate on you, it only makes you stronger.
-This game should be a strictly microphone game. To play the game you must suffer the humiliation of picking up a mic and trying to nail someone else's rap.
-It should come in a gold box on a big gold chain, and be distributed on platinum discs. You should get bonus points for wearing the box around your neck as you play.
-It should be a natal game and it should evaluate your camera presence as you play. Because no one cares how good your flow is, as long as you look fly in the video.
-Instead of music merch sponsors, like the ones you get in Guitar Zero, you should get sponsorships by Gucci and Prada and other fashion companies so your character will look like a women's style specialist, just like a real rapper.
-There should be a GTA-style mini-game where your character tries to "get back to his roots" by selling weed on street corners. He should be able to resort to this whenever he's low on funds and can't afford to tour, or just whenever the rest of the game is too boring.

"The Way I Are" by Timbaland feat D.O.E. (Hills/Hilson/Maultsby/Mosley/Bale'Wa/Mosley /Muhammad /Nelson) administered on behalf of Jerry Lee (ASCAP).

I like that song. But the rest...No.

Maybe its just a hip-hop track pack or something.

Ha, that was great. I'd buy that.
Well, shit, I wouldn't, I'm not into these fake music games but I'd definately approve of it.
It's wonderful how most of your suggestions avoid anything to do with actually making noise.

If I wanted to play crap music I'd buy Band Hero. Or Rock Revolution.

Not even any good rap. =(

Oh well, Mass Effect 2 will tide me over until RAGE comes out, so no worries there. lol

Wow. Lots of serious spite going down here.

I don't listen to the stuff much, but there is some hip-hop which is very good. I'm more of a rock-and-roll guy myself though.

Please. No more plastic instruments Harmonix...

This won't be for a new game. Harmonix has stated numerous times that they want to have ALL kinds of music available as DLC.

Sure, I don't think the songs they picked were very good (except Ante Up, that's a bad ass track), but I'm glad to see new stuff become available.

Are you serious?

Exactly.

THE GREAT JT'S SUGGESTION FOR POSSIBLE HARMONIX RAP GAME NAME:
"Even Sadder Than Actually Rapping Because I Have Absolutely No Musical Ability And Cannot Contribute Meaningfully To Society Hero"

I'm kidding, I'm kidding, don't hit!

Seriously, I'm thinking "Hip-Hop Hero" would work.

I didn't think hip-hop music even used guitars. O_o Not that I'm an expert in that particular field... However, I hope this doesn't mark Harmonix's first foray into the "DJ Hero" scene, or whatever their equivalent would be.

Even though I can appreciate that some people genuinely enjoyed DJ Hero, it really was a flop, and I thought Harmonix would be smarter than to simply join the flock.

Wow. Lots of hate for rap and R&B going on here. You'd think a community that gets picked on as much as the gaming set does would be a bit more open minded.

I'm never been into the whole "plastic instrument" game thing except when gaming with friends. If the track list is good, I'll probably be giving this one some consideration.

What an interesting role for the singer...

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangsta-ass nigga plays his cards right
A real gangsta-ass nigga never runs his fuckin mouth
'cause real gangsta-ass niggas don't start fights
And niggas always gotta high cap
Showin' all his boys how he shot em

HA HA!

LOLOLOL at "Grillz & Bitchez?"

best name for a rap group ever.

Could just be they want to put up some Rap for DLC. I won't buy it, so it doesn't really effect me. I am interested in them broadening the horizons for music games.

PS You don't like, just don't buy it. You really don't need to rage against it so much.

Remember kids,

Bitches not stitches.

First thought: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Second thought: WHY?!!
Third thought: Hmmmm. I might play some Guitar Hero.

There it goes, RAP HERO. I hope harmonix burns to the ground, or relocates to haiti.

So... Rock Band is going to rip off DJ Hero, from the makers of Guitar Hero, which ripped off Rock Band with Band Hero, who ripped off Guitar Hero, who ripped off GuitarFreaks, which was followed by Rock Revolution, which failed because it wasn't as good as the game that ripped off the game it ripped off that was ripping itself o--hmm, my mind appears to have broken.

No. Just no. This is a bad idea and will not end well.

Just drop seeking the rap licenses and get "Stairway to Heaven" already!

Caliostro:

I'm getting tired of these really snide and smug little snipes at anything other than rock and metal music.

I mean, GOOD ONE BRO! GIRLS ARE DUMB ANYWAY I WISH THEY WOULD LISTEN TO OPETH INSTEAD UGH MAYBE THEN THEY WOULD TALK TO US!

Nono... I'm not against other types of music, in fact I listen to pretty much every genre from Metal, Pop, 80's, Classic, and Opera to Reggae, Techno and even more alternative styles... The keyword there is music.

I've listened to some good raps. Some really good ones even. But I can't bring myself to call it music. Poetry maybe. Most of it quite dreadful, some of it good, with some rare gems of pure gold... But then again that describes most things that ever existed doesn't it?

My problem with rap and "R&B" is that they lack the essential part of music... The music. They have lyrics, some good, most seemingly written by a 12 year older with Down's Syndrome... But the lyrics exist. But where's the music? Ironically lyrics are not the fundamental part of music, they're complementary at best. The "music" in these genres is generally just samples they play with a synthesizer. If that's music I'm the greatest musician alive. I can play any genre and just about any music ever made that has an mp3 available, I just turn on Winamp.

It's bad enough that the whole genre of "rhythm games" is a sad joke, but pretending to be a band of a genre that doesn't really have any use for bands feels a bit like dedicating an entire Singstar game to techno music...

If Rhythm and Blues(See? no need for quotation.) isnt a valid form of music then I'm the pied fuckin' piper.

Seriously, do you think that Chuck Berry was just looping tracks? Nat King Cole? ELVIS?

You don't have the facts, dude. Even rap has its roots so engrained into African American culture that its an insult to their history to say it will never be on the same level as your favorite bands. Nevermind the fact that groups like the Roots and the Beastie Boys show more integrity as well as lyrical and musical prowess than most of the drivel being pushed out by mainstream rock acts these days.

Bottom line, don't knock on something as big as rap and hip hop. And especially R&B. If you dont believe me about the contributions all three of those genres has given back to the musical community, look into it yourself. You might be surprised.

I should have specified that by R&B I meant the majority of junk pumped out these days that's labeled R&B to prevent being labeled rap. Mea culpa, should have specified.

Ahaha... I see, this is the joke part.

You know what else is big? MTV, The Transformers movies and Twilight... See a pattern...?

I'd imagine these songs are DLC, so I don't see the point in all the whining. Don't download it if you don't want it. I hate country, but there have been several country packs to come out on Rock Band, I simply didn't download anything. It isn't the end of the world.

Plus, they did say Snoop Dogg would be DLC at some point as well. That was some time ago.

Did they forget the name of their game or something?

Right, I'm a formally trained composer and musician and what you just said makes no sense. Hip Hop and R&B use the same exact compositional processes as the above genres you listed. They're just another part of the family of Western popular music. The only reason people hate them is because of antiquated and hilariously misplaced snobbish ideas about what is and what is not real music.

Then again, I guess it must be pretty frustrating to just be an amateur musician or even just a listener who can't do anything more than disrespect what other people enjoy listening or making. I guess it makes sense though; what else can you do?

Umm, they've had Snoop Dogg licenced for ages

Exactly. I think some of the "gamers" here are just afraid of diversity.
