Watch the Beginning of Alan Wake Online

Want to see parts of the first few levels in Remedy's upcoming psychological thriller Alan Wake? One helpful fan has posted six minutes of excerpts from the game's beginning online.

Alan Wake, a "psychological action" title about a novelist who takes a getaway with his wife to a remote village to help him with his writers' block only to find crazy sh*t going down, was one of the most highly-anticipated titles for the Xbox 360 when it was originally announced in 2005. Now, five years later, it's actually seeing the light of day, scheduled for release in May.

And judging by the six or so minutes of clips from the game, it's looking pretty good. I'm particularly interested by the mechanic where you need to shine your flashlight at monsters in order to make them vulnerable. It has the potential to get very annoying if used incorrectly, but it could also be very effective in communicating a feeling of dread or vulnerability, since it seems that Alan moves more slowly when he's got his flashlight up.

The game is out on May 18th in the US, and May 21st in the UK and Europe.

Isn't this just Secret Window the video game? I hope that it isn't because that movie sucked, but I guess we'll see.

*guy gets stabbed with axe. Sound effect exactly the same as when you just hack on a tree*

*Huge container thingy hits you in the face: sound effect: Boink*

Hilarious little things. But yes, it's looking pretty damn amazing.

Also, the sung/god/...thing has an awful voice-actor. So boring. I'd prefer a more divine voice. Like Christopher Walken!

"You need... to walk... into the lIIIght.............. now"

Man, I've been waiting for this since...Well it was announced!

Lets hope Remedy doesn't let us down and delay it forever...

Too bad it won't be on the PC :(

delay folks sorry but the game will be releasing next to duke nukem forever!

I'm just glad whenever someone makes a game that is not
1. Super Mario variations
2. Space marines being manly men (e.g. Halo, Gears of War)
3. American soldiers in war being manly men (e.g. Call of Duty, Battlefield)

Gogo variation of games!

Was excited, and continue to be.. although the blinking, talking light kind of worries me.

This has been completely off my radar so far, but with this gameplay excerpt I'll show it a bit more attention. If only for the fact it is a member of a dying genre.

This'll be so.
Fucking.
Awesome.

MAN that looked cool

I hope it'll come for the PS3. for now it's an exclusive, but anything can happen in the next year or so, right? Right?

I like the look but it has a very Silent Hill feel to it. Not saying that is a bad thing exactly but that is not my kind of game to play, I prefer to be a spectator like with Condemned.

The Light sort of sounded like Vigil from Mass Effect. Might have just been the voice modification, but still...

Looks very nice. It seems very set-piece reliant (hopefully that is just because of the "trailer gameplay" showed finished spectacles to wow us).

Also hopefully the torch mechanic and the shouts from the enemy whenever they spawn won't become tiresome.

The shadow-detail looks really good.

I don't care for Alan's voice too much, though.

Certainly going to Gamefly this one.

You mean they're actually trying to get people to buy Alan Wake by advertizing on the PC?

They couldn't reach the same number of people if they only showed clips through LIVE, so they use the platform they canceled it for... the PC!

I'm watching Alan Wake on the PC!

Alan wake sure looks good on my PC!

PC!

ALAN WAKE ONLINE?

it's an mmo?

wait a minute...

p.s.

Such a shame there will be no PC version, but hopefully there will be a port at some time. It was originally supposed to be on PC and they worked on the PC version for about 4 years, so it's not exactly unreasonable to suggest PC gamers will see one at a later date. Keeping my fingers crossed!

:D

I kept thinking the same thing through the entire trailer.
Damn that flashlight has mad range.

I lost hope for this game when they shat over its PC development.

Hey, Microsoft! You know you have this thing you sell that gives you 90%+ marketshare in personal computers? Windows? Ring any bells? That's your product as well, you know?

If it really looks that amazing graphically, the eyecandy alone is atleast enough to warrant a rental.

Heck, who knows, maybe it'll have interesting gameplay/plot.

The enemy shouts aren't a constant- they're more in place for the tutorial to present that sense of danger to the player. Though they mumble other things, things that might be a little less direct and more disturbing.

Once the video got to the horror part I immediately thought "this reminds me of Alone in the Dark, but with much less fire". The game looks somewhat interesting, I'll probably rent it when it comes out.

Heck, it looks awesome, hopefully they manage to create a good atmosphere.

Good thing im getting this on my PC. Im sure its much more immersive that way. Not to speak about better lighting effects on high end PCs. Just imagine, what if microsoft were assholes and made this a 360 exclusive, for no credible reason at all?

Had alost forgot about this, perhaps forcefully so after the "not on PC" announcement. Alan Wake used to be the posterboy for PC potential, (I first saw it as a demo of quad-core capabilities,) so I don't quite understand that. Never mind. Would have bought it but guess not now.

Didn't... didn't i saw this a year ago or something? I honestly thought the game was already released...

Yeah, i am sure i saw gameplay-material like this over a year ago. Ah well... maybe i will buy it, when it is in the 10 buck-category.

I am creeped out by this video, because Alan Wake has stolen all my clothes, and added elbow patches to my jacket.

Anyway, I would nerdgasm, but xbox exclusive!

I remember this game being marketed as "Vista only", back when Vista was new, and getting a lot of flak. Meh, I say.

Looks awesome, but the big glowy thing is a bit weird. He's getting advice from a big photon that talks. That's just freaky.

Think I'll leave it a while after release to see if it's worth picking up. On the one hand it's made by the same folks that made Max Payne, and it does look like a decent change from the norm...but then again so did Alone in the Dark, with it's use of light and inventory items, and that game is among the worst I've played (especially the second half when they wanted me to trek around to find roots, I gave up then)

Hmmm...really intrested in this the more and more I hear/see of it

That does make sense, I just can't stand it in games when a character repeats the same tired stock phrases throughout.

I am quite intrigued, not least because of the sheer development time that this game has had. I do genuinely hope this game will be good.

That looked incredibly creepy, and also very Max Payne.

I hate the bit where he got hit by the flying tank and barely even flinched, just dragged me out of the trailer so much, otherwise it looked ok, still looking forward to seeing how it turns out/

Is it just me or does the torch look like a glorified laser sight
