The Internet Names Derby Ring Road "Lara Croft Way"

Thanks to the power of the internet, the new ring road in the U.K. city of Derby has officially been named Lara Croft Way.

You might recall that back in July of last year, the Derby City Council went to the public for help in naming two sections of the city's inner ring road that had just been built. A list of over 100 suggestions was eventually whittled down to eight contenders, but then the council made a big mistake: It took the voting online and opened it to everyone.

Once word got out, it didn't take long for gamers around the world to flex their collective online muscle. Despite numerous other options with a more traditional ring, 89 percent of the nearly 28,000 votes cast were for Lara Croft Way, named after the famous videogame heroine who was created by Derby-based studio Core Design.

Sounding rather resigned about the whole thing, Councilor Lucy Care said, "The vote really captured the imagination of people from across the world and, despite my lack of gaming knowledge, I accept that a majority of 89 percent for Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore! She was created in Derby and deserves stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city."

Core Design, unfortunately, no longer stands in Derby or anywhere else; the studio was bought out by Rebellion in 2006 and, as Rebellion Derby, is reportedly being considered for closure.

yessssssssssssss we gamers have power!

What, no interference from Stephen Colbert? You know he loves to put his name on everything he can.

Heh. I remember reading the article about this last year :P
I actually made one of those votes for that name... I'm a statistic :|
Well, Now to wait for Metal Gear Road and Mass Effect Close...

Awesome sauce! I am so going to visit and get pictures taken there!

Now we just need to vote to rename Michael Atkinson's street to 'Manhunt 2 Avenue'.

Good. Very good. Now awaiting Lombax Boulevard, or something.

Something isn't right about this. If a poll was opened on the internet to name a street, they would have involved tits, an obscenity, Chuck Norris or David Hasslehoff somehwere. In a way, I'm disappointed internet.

Gawd, I remember reading about this and wondered if they would actually go through with naming the road after Lara...

...I fear Master Chief BLVD.

They only had eight options, I'm guessing none of these were on the list.

Yes, that vote probably really "captivated the audience".

Now lets name one after Digimon!

Calumon: Yay! Calumon Crescent, Or Takato Lane!

Epic! Go Derby =D

RAH! Next time I'm up in Derby, I'll take a photo of the roundabout YOU named! ;)

Oh the power of the internet, they should have known better.

Haha I voted for Lara Croft! I heard about it through collegehumor's "ruin a poll" thing. Good stuff.

First, Silent Hill Street then we'll target cities & countries and finally, The World!!! Mwuahahahah!

Online voting is a bad idea?

Who'da thunk it?

Isn't there a bridge named after him in Hungary? Why not a ring road as well?

But, I feel this should be an obligatory part of my post: Go Gamers!

seeing as I have walked past them building this road nearly everyday, and will see it very often, I am so happy about this
