Top 10 Most Expensive Games Ever

Does GTAIV's $100 million figure include the $50 million "loan" Rockstar received from Microsoft for the time-exclusive DLC, or is that just for the core, multi-format game?

$100 Million for GTA4?

How did they use that much money to make it so average?

Saints Row 2 was better and probably cost less than half of the price.

Just goes to show you cant just throw money into a game to make it good.

The reason MewTwo isn't there is because most fo MewTwo's budget went to marketing.

do a list for games that took the longest time to develop (and then release, sorry DNF.) that would be cool.

Wow. The Three games up there that I've played aren't that great.

Guess budget isn't everything...

Wow, this is one of the first times I've seen APB mentioned, hope it still takes off despite that it's relatively under the radar. Looks like a great game.

and I played only one game of that lot, GTAIV, and that wasn't really good. If that was the most expensive game of all, I wonder, where is the moral lesson in that? :)

I mean, if people can produce games colossally better than GTAIV, and for the fraction of the cost nonetheless (in fact, there are even FREE games ultimately better than GTAIV), game designers should sit down, and take a good, hard look at what they done with their lives.

Money is not everything as this little list shows...

The list isn't particularly surprising. Some of the really expensive ones will be down to licensing music or cars [in Gran Turismo].

Didn't play any of those games, except some GTA4. Which I didn't like. What a waste of money.

I think the only game I played and won out of those ten was Shenmu which I don't really remember enough to say if I liked it or not... I played the Too Human demo and it was ok, it didn't seem that terrible though. FF12 was boring and it didn't even have that many cut scenes compared to other Final Fantasys... Note, a big budget doesn't necessarily mean a game will be mediocre but this list does show that throwing tons of money at something doesn't necessary mean it would be good.

I can see one game up there I actually enjoyed. A couple I haven't played, but the rest disappointed me to no end.

I can't even see one.

Only game that really used the money was GTA4. Fine game with few criminal flaws.

Not surprised MW2 isn't on there at all. They essentially just remade CoD4. Same engine, same length campaign, hell half of the weapon skins and sounds were the same. They just claimed it was "T3H GREATEST GAME EVERZ0RS" and half the world fell for it.

Its funny how infinity ward argued that since MW2 cost so mcu hto make, they should be able to charge more. Yet it does not appear on this list of much lower priced games.

I know, Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV are like, 35USD now... and cost more to make than Modern Warfart 2 (Couldn't resist, forgive me.). Funny.

Eggsnham:
If Duke Nukem' Forever is still being worked on; I would imagine that it's costing them hundreds of millions.. Or maybe even.. BILLIONS! *dun dun dun*

It's been cancelled I think. According to a gaming magazine.

OT:Thats alot of money being made for games.

I got a laugh of irony at the list when the first thing that came to my mind in comparison was the similar theme in movies where often the bigger budget doesn't always equate to a hit, either. Out of the list, I played only two of the games (Halo 3 and GTA4), and I can't say I really saw where the budget for GTA4 was evenly spaced out through the game. The story was good, the gameplay was just fine for the most part, but I always felt there was something missing from the game that I couldn't put my finger on.

How much did Rockstar spend on the coding for those annoying phone calls you got every 90 seconds from someone wanting to go bowling, drinking, or to a strip club?! That was a spot they could have taken some money away from the budget to invest in the pole-climbing ability they talked about pre-release of the game.

Huh, I only held KZ2 in the context of being really quite expensive. But at least you can say now it was cheaper AND betterer then Too Human! Take that, haters.

Calling bullshit on Killzone 2 costing $45 million as almost every other source cites $20 million to DEVELOP the game, the extra $25 million is almost certainly from the worldwide advertising campaign, where it was usually co-advertised with the PS3 itself.

http://news.spong.com/article/12979/Killzone-2-at-E3-Cost-USD20-Million-To-Date

It's not fair to include ad costs for some games and not for others.

See for all the complaining people make about game costs they are mainly in places like EMPLOYING and HIRING lots of talented people for many man hours to make great games. It's not like it is being blown on expensive sets or resources but is being spent on PEOPLE which I think is the best place to be spending any money in an industry.

But on the other hand one can end up paying through the nose to get a 30 second TV slot and enough exposure.

Wow, I seriously hope Gran Turismo 5 gets released soon so they can at least make back a bit of that massive budget. How long ago was the prologue released? plenty of time for it to become a platinum title and disappear into the obscurity of time and memory. They really need to hurry up and finish it before its cost rises any higher. I suspect it's been perfectly playable for a long time now, and I applaud Polyphony for their devotion to detail and quality, but there is such thing as taking perfectionism too far.

Here's to a hopeful 2010 release.

Too human was 60 million? I am speechless...

as am I....it's like paying a dog just to shit on the carpet

Bravo.

John Funk:
And WoW spends $50 million on upkeep/maintenance every quarter.

Gotta love MMOs.

Yep, keeping an MMO up to date, with a major patch once every 3 months (basically a 1/4 of a new game once every 3 months) is a hell of a costly process.

But don't they make around 250 millions USD quarterly at the same time? No wonder MMORPGRS sprout like shrooms after the rain. Everyone wants a slice out of those 200 mil of profit.

Shenmue?

Did not play any of those, doubt i ever will. Did not like GTA IV. Many users here share my feelings. I see a lesson to be learned here.

Con-clueh-shen: if i had $100 million, i would rather make ten innovative games. Hey, some of them may turn out to be successful!

L.A. Noire better be good damn it! My hopes are too high for it to fail!

I'm still not getting where all of MW2 cost went. Was it just all cause of graphics? I know it wasn't spend on coding or game design.

lol Too Human

and by "Most people" with regards to Halo, you mean people on this site especially/mainly

I'm surprised MW2 wasn't on here, tho I guess marketing isn't included?

life must be difficult...

Stabby Joe:
Before anyone says "Too Human sucked, how could of it cost so much!?"

Too Human as we know it was NOT developed over a decade with a set budget of millions. It changed platforms, generations and developers, being built up from the ground every so many years only to start over. Like Duke Nukem Forever but was actually released.

It really makes you wonder how much of that $60 million went into the actual game as released. Still, kind of depressing to see that the fourth-most expensive game to develop was also probably the lowest seller of the year. :/

How official are these stats? I remember the MGS producer refuting them and overall I can't help but feel most of these are blunt estimates.

GTA4 had over 1000 people working on it? That's insane.....

There seems to be a common theme on this list. All these games are terrible and made for console tards.

Teh Blasta:
APB made the list?!? Holy shit, man! GTA4 isn't very surprising, but goddamn I had no idea APB had that much money behind it. LA Noire has been development hell if you ask me, I've been trying to keep track of that games progress since 2007 and there really isn't much to show for. They say it is going to hit this year though, I can only hope Rockstar can pull some profit out of this one.

nice avatar btw "Le Tueur"... c'est pas de la BéDé XIII ?

Ty, it is ok, I may change it again, and sorry but I don't speak French. A common assumption though. :D

They spent triple the amount on marketing than they actually did making the game.

And of those on the list, GT5, APB and LA Noir don't even have release dates yet.
How the hell did they burn through 60+ mil for Too Human? With stuff like Killzone 2 at least you can see where the money went.
