PS3 Officially the Heaviest Console Ever

image

"Huge like Xbox" is a thing of the past: The original PS3 has been officially named the most massive videogame console ever released.

Compared to Nintendo's portable little GameCube and Sony's reasonably-sized PS2, Microsoft's massive original Xbox (and its massive original controllers) became the butt of many jokes last generation, like this one for Gundam fans. But now these jokes may have good reason to come to an end: The Xbox is no longer the biggest bear in the market.

Famitsu Weekly has officially named the PS3 - that is, the original PS3 that launched in 2006 - as the heaviest videogame console ever released, clocking in at slightly over 11 lbs (5 kg). This makes the original Xbox seem relatively tiny, weighing in at a mere 8.6 lbs. However, the Xbox is still in second place ahead of the Xbox 360 (7.9 lbs) and the new, lighter PS3 Slim (7.05 lbs).

The lightest console ever made, on the other hand, was Nintendo's Game Boy Micro, which checked in at a mere 2.82 ounces (80 grams). This means, of course, that it would take 62.4 GB Micros to equal the weight of just a single release-day PS3. Talk about throwing your weight around!

So the next time you drop your PS3 while taking it off a shelf to review White Knight Chronicles, remember that you could have just dropped 11 pounds on your feet, so you should be thankful (even if doing so broke the machine).

Alas, it seems that Famitsu Weekly has ignored my prototype console, the PlayStation Lead. Maybe it's for the best.

There has to be a fat princess joke in here somewhere...

My table isn't complaining, and it's not like I lug it around.

I wonder how much the Gold Wii weighed.

Gold is freaking heavy...

Hehe...well, something you can finally put up against that original Xbox XD

Surprised taken this long for someone to do something like this lol

I need to ask: So what?

I bet my desktop computer is heavier than that. Still has absolutely no incidence on my enjoyment of it and it's not like the wooden floorboards aren't used to things such as furniture, appliances and, you know, 150+ lbs humans walking around on them.

Did the Xbox 360 measurement include the power supply?

Wooooo fat consoles ftw.

Although why does it matter? Desktops are massively heavy. Meh.

Ooooh... good question. I didn't even think of that. That would easily put it in number two.

Wait wait wait. It's only 5kg.That's strange, the box that mine came in said that it was 7 kgs...Well this is confusing.Which one is it?

Ah, so that's why people say the Wii shouldn't be compared to the Ps3 when it comes to games.

Different weight classes. :D

When was the last time a console was designed to be moved and lightweight? My TV unit isn't complaining.

I'm sure I had a point there

When the PS3 backs up, you can hear a beeping sound.

The PS3 is so fat it has its own gravity well.

And I thought the Atari 5200 would weigh more.

Its not e

Yes of course part II of setting up your 360 where to put the huge power brick! I think if MS were to have some how incorporated the Power supply into the console it would be very close contender to PS3 in terms of being heavy and bulky. I mean come on its of course the you can "slim" off your console if you push power supply out of the box!

Whatever the editor is using to translate units. It happens all the time. I think in imperial I weight like 700 lbs.

On topic, I don't mind, really. My friends used to carry around their Cubes and PS2s and that was still a pain. These days they still move their PS3s using the same bags and carry cases. It's a bit heavier, but it's not like you're walking around with them, is it?

Now, size IS an issue, but I'm not sure I prefer the smaller form factor. Both the PS2 and the PS3 slim feel cheap to me (and I've never owned either). I'd have to see the rumoured 360 redesign to determine if it's any better.

I can say one thing now, though, we have the fugliest console generation ever these days, with the possible exception of the original PS2. Portables all look sexy, though. I love the matte finish on the DSi, the look of the PSP Go and, of course, the alien tech on the iPhone.

Better question... why did this come out now and not 4 years ago when the PS3 actually came out?

I want to know why this is important.

Ah, I remember the days when I used to be able to fit two consoles on a single shelf. Now they each get their own. Not only because of size, but because I don't want to accidentally create a super nova over there with all the heat.

That should be the next thing they check, which system puts out the most heat. I'm sure the PS3 will still be tops.

I disagree...

I'm fairly sure that the Sega Genesis, with all of the addons is heavier then the PS3.

What with the CD Addon, and the 32 bit addon, it was a BEAST
*Edit

Here's the freaken monstrosity.

OOOOooohhh Would yeah look at that Shirley... She be a ferocious one she is.

Yeah, I was thinking something around this while reading the article. Seriously, the weight has been on cnet for like 3 years.

That Gundam picture is fucking awesome.....

Anyways.... why is this only being released now?

I really didn't think anyone else would have thought of this.

Well if you're going to go there let's use punch-out analogies. The Wii would Little Mac and the PS3 is Super Macho Man because this generation Sony was releasing a whole lot of bogus. [/joke]

EDIT: the Xbox 360 is Soda Popinski because he turns Red when he's denied refreshment [/bonus joke]

He's on to us! Play us off!

OT: Why the hell do I care? Is it supposed to be portable?

Its about time someone got the courage to tell the PS3 that it looks fat in its favorite jeans.

I would have thought the Atari 5200 would be heavier, seeing as it has a door.

I'm tempted to make a "Strong like bull" joke here. I know there's scope for it... :P

Taking my 360 around is a bitch, I'd hate to take the PS3 around on my back D:

clever fat jokes. But really the only issue I had was the massive xbox controller, you could club seals with that thing

I actually like giant controllers, because I have giant hands. I've played NES games with one controller in each hand, those things are so tiny.

They forgot to include the power "brick" which is external in both original Xbox and 360 and makes them the true number 1 and 2.
