Gordon Bellamy has been elected as the new chair of the International Game Developers Association.

Bellamy, senior producer at Emerging Media yU+co, was elected to the position at the annual IGDA Board of Directors meeting held last week. "The new board members are an incredible group of leaders ready to tackle the challenges facing our industry and they join a great board," he said. "Personally, I hope to expand support to our local chapters and special interest groups and try some new things with conferences on the east coast so we can reach more members and grow problem-solving from the grassroots level."

Joining Bellamy are 1st Playable Productions CEO Tobi Saulnier, who will serve as Treasurer, and Riptide Games Founder and President Brian Robbins, who will move into the role of Secretary. First-time board members include International Hobo Ltd. writer and designer Wendy Despain, Fuzbi founder David Edery, Orbus Games President Darius Kazemi and Foundation 9 Business Development Director Jane Pinckard.

"With the new board members that have joined us we have an incredible group of leaders ready to tackle the tough challenges the industry is facing," Robbins said.

Founded in 1994 by the merger of the Computer Entertainment Developers Association and the Computer Game Developers Association and renamed the International Game Developers Association in 2000, the IGDA is a non-profit organization intended to "advance the careers and enhance the lives of game developers by connecting members with their peers, promoting professional development, and advocating on issues that affect the developer community." Well, I hope he does well for all who work in the industry! Certainly kn ow after certain events with the San Diego Developer...they do need someone to stand there for them and help them when they need it!

I've never heard of some of those developers...

Riptide Games, 1st Playable Productions, International Hobo...

Good on him, though!

Well I think the idea is to get everyone big and small together into a single "cartel" to coordinate, set policy, and increase all their earnings. The idea being that they doubtlessly want even the small developers to abide by set prices and such. That way if say "International Hobo" releases a game they will set the price at the same level of much bigger studios despite a lower development budget, etc...

But hey, I'm a pessimistic cynic. I've been a critic of organizations like this for years now as while they have benefits, I feel in the overall scheme of things they wind up not being in the best interests of the consumers themseles, since a routine topic of debate is going to be how they industry as a whole can increase profits by cohesive efforts to exploit us as much as possible. :P

I'd be a little more accepting if groups like this were also directly fighting international censorship/firewalls/etc... by coordinated action, but in general they do not. You did not see them throwing tons of money in a direct headbutting contest with Michael Atkinson for example, nor do you see them throwing down directly against China. If anything I'd imagine they try and come up with a way to work with such goverments and maximize profits by doing so.

Hmm...any relation to Matt Bellamy of Muse?
