PlayStation 3 Firmware Update Causes Problems

image

Sony's most recent mandatory firmware update has crippled a number of consoles.

Late last month, The Escapist reported that Sony was releasing a mandatory firmware update that would disable the option to install an alternate OS, in addition to increasing the system's security. That update was released on April 1, and is now causing problems for many PS3 owners.

Users have been reporting issues on the official PlayStation forums ranging from blank screens when the console is switched on to disk read errors to locked PSN accounts to the inability to even power up at all. These problems are not all-encompassing - many PlayStation 3 owners will experience no difficulties at all, but they are prevalent enough within the community to warrant a 15-page thread on the issue.

This is not the first time a Sony firmware update has caused issues. Last September, their firmware update caused problems with logging into PSN and accessing trophies for some players. As with the last update, Sony will likely try to push out a fix as soon as possible, but for some PlayStation 3 owners, there may be a bit of a wait before they can use their console again.

Thank god I've been attached to a certain free online computer game else I'd be pretty pissed off...again. I love me PS3 and everything about it but it just seems that every other update from Sony tends to kill it, the previous firmware issue apparently couldn't be fixed with an update for mine so they had me send it it...about the same time I had a new game and a week off from work...GRR

Well thank god i havent been connected to PSN recently so i didnt get the update

I haven't had any of those problems so far *touch wood*, but it did crash after installing the update, and I've been having wireless issues. this happens all the time so I don't think its related. Hopefully they'll release another update soon with some new features.

Muhahhahahaahh did you here that Bill? It worked! The 360 will soon be able to take over the world!!!! muahahahahhahaahahahahahahhahah!!

EDIT: Ok guys this is a disclaimer:

This post is not, I repeat NOT A troll post. It is NOT to be taken seriously in any way, and is just meant to be a bit of fun. A joke. A JOKE!!!!!!!!

Can anyone seriously say what I posted and actually be considered for any intellectual gain?

END DISCLAIMER

Looks like my ps3 will continue to collect dust till this blows over.

On April 1st? Man, the irony is so thick you could cut it with a fucking knife!

This is why I'm glad I down keep my PS3 perminantly connect to the net. I love my PS3 and everything, but this is just a poor show by Sony.

"It can only do everything" including being mocked as a first april joke when it wasn't.

Meh. Don't get your panties in a bunch people. Knowing Sony, they'll pull out a quick fix for this.

Again, I blame hackers for making the OS feature such a risky thing.

Not to mention to remove the Other OS you have to back up your system data to a HDD (Fat 32 only not NTFS) then format your PS3. And if you DON'T do this, you're left with the other OS taking up space you cannot access because the update does not remove this.

I got the update, everything is dandy for me

My old faithful release 60GB PS3 has yet to fail me. 3 years and counting since the PS3 was released?

Same Here friend, same here.

Calumon: I was trapped underneath one for days! They are really, really heavy!

Oh come on, this is getting a little silly.

This is what, the third update that's crippled (some) people's machines? And then they couldn't program the clock right?

Hopefully this'll be the last of it - because if I ever get a PS3 to play Uncharted 2 I will beat the head of Sony down with a stick if my machine is crippled.

Well thank jebbus mine still working.

Thank God I haven't connected. And I won't until I complete FFXIII. I won't let it do any harm to my save files. I'm 20 hours into this bitch and I won't lose all that work now.

Are you gonna keep up that Calumon thing for ever? (I do actually hope so, your posts make me laugh)

Man, I seem to be dodging all kinds of flak with my PS3.

(Great, now I've jinxed myself.)

Seconded.

I updated my PS3 slim to 3.21 and haven't noticed any issues. Obvious the lack of linux functionality is a moot point for me because the console couldn't do that in the first place. I did notice that the update process itself took quite a bit of time, but that could just be my internet connection being slow. The console has been on literally 100% of the time- I donate to [email protected] and haven't noticed any problems.

You know, I've been thinking about finally taking the plunge and getting a PS3, and every time I get ready to buy one, I hear about something Sony does to wreck them and it puts me off for another month or so...

I haven't tried updating it yet. I have a slim. Wonder what models it affected. Ill give it a go in any case.
EDIT

Ok cool, a little less hesitant now.

Until I die! Or I get bored and give Calumon an account where Calumon is the only poster! (Probably never going to happen...)

Calumon: I wanna play forever and ever and ever!

I'm supposed to be getting a 250GB Slim this Sunday. If the problem isn't fixed by then, count me in, will you?

No, this is like the fourth or fifth problematic update.

As for the clock, that wasn't their fault. The manufacturer of one of the chips inside the system screwed up.

P.S. Thanks

Could I ask where Caulmon originated from?

This happens with just about every update on every console. For whatever reason, the update bricks some consoles.

Although I haven't heard of any 360s bricked with this week's update; that must be some kind of record (knock on wood).

Of course, with the 360's failure rate, it's hard to tell whether it's the update or just it's "time". *rimshot*

Oh no! not a 15 page thread! lets look away from the 200 page threads about 360 issues and focus on whats going on with Sony!

Ehhhhhhh... Again... Why me...

Alright, I retract my clock-related statement.

Also, "thanks"?

I've had no issue since the update, but once again Sony drops the ball. They need a better testing department.

It's like the universe is conspiring to prove that I am right, fighting DRM hurts the consumers more than the piracy itself, especially what is just POTENTIAL piracy with "OMG our console isn't completely locked down"

Come on Sony, PS1 was still great to spite how easy it was to get chipped.

If you are worried about piracy you shouldn't even be half as worry about that as rushing out hasty updates (in the name of countering piracy) that brick your consoles as that harms your reputation to new customers and your relations with your existing customers.

They will learn in the end but HOW LONG!

After the download, I couldn't get onto Playstation store the other day. Could it be related?

Everything seems fine now, but I'll be wary.

It's all a conspiracy by Nintendo, you realise? They wanted to sabotage all the competition. Microsoft, they knew, was too strong. The Evil Empire could not be infiltrated, the code... could not be changed.

So they sent forth the gremlins to the factories, the shipping plants, to place molotov cocktails inside each and every Xbox. Now, the tech ninjas have infiltrated Sony, placing tactical binary to undermine them from within.

We're all doomed! They will come for us!

my ps3 is fine. yay. :D

no problems with mine. Running smoothly as ever.
