Bodycount Creative Director: "F*ck Realism"

image

Bodycount Creative Director Stuart Black has a refreshing approach toward realism videogames that can be perfectly summed up in two simple words: "Fuck realism."

Truth be told, Black's attitude isn't all that unusual. After all, no matter how "realistic" videogames become, certain concessions have to be made for the fact that you're sitting on your couch. And hardcore simulators aside, videogames are meant to be fun and not actual terror-filled brushes with death. Still, there aren't many industry figures who are quite so up-front about their feelings regarding realism than Black, an industry veteran who spent time at studios including Bullfrog and Criterion before coming to Codemasters.

"If realism doesn't help the game, fuck it, throw it away," he said in an interview with The Guardian.

Black said Codemasters, where Bodycount is being developed, is a good fit for him because of its attitude that fun should trump everything else. "I've known Codemasters all my gaming life, but I'd never thought about working for them," he continued. "But it came to me through an agency, and I thought, what the hell. And when I went up there - I was just really impressed by the attitude towards development. It felt like, here's a place I can get some creative freedom, some creative control and really develop something I want to develop."

Bodycount is built on a "general sense of escapism," according to Black. "I don't want Bodycount to reflect the reality that I'm in, I've got enough of that around me," he said. "I want to go somewhere else - I want to be lifted up, to forget about my troubles, and escape."

Bodycount is currently in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and is expected to launch in early 2011.

A game designer after my own heart.

Realism has made lots of FPSs boring, I want a cyber-trans-bollocks cannon...

Ill look into this closer to its release date.

Wooo! Black was an awesome sexy gunfest and this should be cool too.

Fuck realism :)

I like this guy, and game, already!

I agree with Stuart Black. Reality sucks, so why should my video game escapism be chock full of it?

Having heard nothing about this game up until now, this has put it on my radar. I'll have to look into it nearer release.

Onyx Oblivion:

Same, lol. He has the right idea. If it dosnt work, move on and make something epic!

The DSM:
I want a cyber-trans-bollocks cannon...ON A SHARK

________
I like this guys attitude.

I demand bowie knife mini gun.

This guy wins the internet.

I like his thinking, because I think we have too many games trying to be too realistic, sometimes I want to be able to jump 10ft in the air or be able to slow down time or something.

Finally, I honestly can't wait for Bodycount, Black was so much fun and if this is even half as good it will be better than 90% of fps's

I'm getting serious, Molyneux-esque vibes off this guy. Maybe his game is amazing, but I get more suspicous each time he says something bold like that.

Otherwise, though, this game looks great.

But being shot once in the leg and having 70% reduced movement speed for the rest of the game would be an awesome feature!
Also, saving is unrealistic and should be removed from all games.

This guy is my hero. FUCK REALISM!!!

And I say f*ck everything else if the only thing that matters is that the game is fun. Realism can be really fun to an extent. I don't care if the game is the best looking game or the most innovating, only fun matters.

This to the extreme. I'm sure it'll be a load of fun and I can't wait.

Fuck Realism indeed.

If you want No realism, play painkiller, rfg, any gta, or the half-life series, and duke nukem.

Interesting that this was in the Guardian - it often seems to have a lot of coverage of computer games for a mainstream newspaper, and it did after all give Charlie Brooker a fairly prominent and hilarious column to vent in.

Makes me think that they have a soft spot for vidya games, which further makes me wonder how they're going to react to Tory plans to help British developers.

My guess is baffled confusion and anguished yelps.

I never heard of him till now and I already like him.

Videogames are like movies in this respect, they have a cyclical nature. Right now we're in the "over the top, silly-yet-fun, sci-fi, comicbook, superhero" phase of movies after the "gritty realism" of the 90's, and it's the opposite with games at the minute, we're in grim, hyper-realistic, GTA IV, Modern Warfare, Heavy Rain territory at the moment, so mebbe a return to Serious Sam style daftness is the next big thing.

I will be buying or at the very least renting this game after that statement. That man has earned a great deal of my respect and 5 internets

"If realism doesn't help the game, fuck it, throw it away", if only this worked for every bad element in a game.

Graphics not helping a game? Fuck it throw it away. Lol youd probably end up with a book instead of a game but still i can dream

Someone in the industry is just NOW realizing what gamers have been saying basically since the release of the 360/PS3?

Pretty much, yeah. Too many games have strived for too much realism and fell flat on their faces. I think Grand Theft Auto IV might have been a victim of that. A little bit is okay for a small feeling of familiarity with how things work, but if anything beyond that doesn't work for the game in question...

As was said, "Fuck it".

Besides, exagerated physics behaviour can be hilarious. Say, punching a guy and having him fly off a few city blocks in the opposite direction, Team Rocket style.

Bring out the GAME already then, I highly approve of his voiced opinion. I am getting tired of the next "realistic" shooter after another. Sure some contain strong emotional messages I grown tired of it. Brown spectrum is boring me. Left for Dead is a nice change as well.

He just might have sold me on this game Bodycount of his. That is a great statement and he should be rewarded for it.

Might have been?

That was it's biggest flaw!

GTA has always been good because it's been either totally unrealistic or had a good balance between the two.

GTA4 decided it would try to keep the funny unrealism while making all the controls, mechanics and characters as real as possible and that's how it fucked itself up.

YES!
FINALLY!
THE TRUTH!

If the realism doesn't help....then forget it!

If i wanted realism id go outside.
Sure some games can be fun with Realism but, id rather have a fun game where the main character can fly by using the power of love than a realistic game that makes sense but isn't fun.

The first was labelled as "Gun Porn". What the hell will this game receive as its moniker I wonder?

I think you only really need enough realism to suspend your belief (if a game is supposed to be serious and immersive). Many games don't even need that. Games like Torchlight and Psychonauts have very little realism, but are a lot of fun.

I approve of this opinion. Saints Row 2 was great since the realism was toned down (hell, it was still good after the HORRIFIC porting job. I believe that was done by another group.)

Amen brother. Bring on the Rocket Koalas and Grapefruit Grenades!

"Fun porn" I'm guessing.

OT: YES! I think he just sold me on his game.

I want the olden days when I could carry a minigun, rocket launcher, chainsaw, and plasma gun all at once and ran at super speed and killed all!

Well. I'm buying this game. And I agree. FUCK REALISM!

whatever you may think of Black the game, this director has a damn point

Thanks for clarifying; I hadn't played GTAIV myself, so that's why I said "might have been". I was just going on what I'd heard from others, and what other people say can be very unreliable sometimes.

Then again, your cousin calling you every ten minutes sounds annoying no matter how you put it.

Actually, I'm quite enjoying Prototype and InFamous because they're fantastic. (multiple senses of the word)

Haha, Fun Gun Porn?

Uber-Gun-Porn?

Uber-Over-Gun-Super-Porn?

Mega-Uber-Gun-Fantastic-Ultra-Sexy-Porn?

Tera-Gun-Porn?

Exo-Gun-Porn??

Where does it end?!?
