Google Celebrates Pac-Man's 30th With Playable Logo

image

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Pac-Man in Japan, and Google's logo has come down with a bad case of Pac-Man Fever.

The lovable yellow puck that was one of gaming's first recognizable "characters" turns thirty today, and Google is getting in on the celebration ... by changing its logo.

Now, I know what you're going to say: "But John, Google changes its logo to celebrate all the time!" That's absolutely true, and Google calls them "doodles". This doodle, however, is different, because it's playable.

Yes, Google has created an entire 255-level clone of Pac-Man, complete with ghosts, power pellets, an "Insert Coin" button, and even a Level 256 "kill screen." This playable logo was created by Google's senior user experience designer Marcin Wichary, who first saw Pac-Man at the age of 5 while traveling with his father, whose job it was to repair arcade machines.

Guys, this thing is too awesome for words. Just be careful, or else you might spend all afternoon playing this damn thing.

click two time on insert coins for two player action !

Ive found this jsut a few mins ago and I am already subvertly playing games at work! hehe

Its epic

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO MESSAGE A NEWSPERSON ABOUT THIS

Was busy reading my inbox.

I played it. It works!

Oh, my god. Forget searching for porn, lets all just play pac-man!

the only thing is that putting this online a friday, is not good for the world productivity

They've made 255 (/256) levels!? I understand the reasoning behind this but damn, I doubt anyone would bother going that far

Really is an excellent change from the norm.

Really very clever.

Probably won't play it much, never got with it.

Google are awesome.

Too late for that...

Well that was a good five minutes wasted. Pretty clever idea.

Who already played it to Level 256? :P

Wow, that is so cool!

Iv gotta show my mom this, Pac-Man was one of the games she grew up with.

I'm just upset that they don't change the level layout at all. Other than that, though, this is awesome.

28'000...

Man I suck.

Calumon: *I got 100'000! ^^*

I'd have messaged a newsperson about this, but I already posted it in the Escapist Presents thread, and I was too busy, um... making sure the game works... for 30 minutes...

Never underestimate the lengths people are willing to go to for recognition.

Yeah, the whole "playable logo" thing is nice and all, but for some reason, even after changing my home page from Google and everything, I can't load up Firefox to browse the internet without hearing the damn sound effects from Pac-Man in the background all the time, and it's starting to piss me off.

hehehe, put something boring in the search bar, play a bit of pac-man, hit enter at the first sign of danger...

Yep, whole afternoon is now gone.

Two player mode with one person is hard

I was on Google this morning and saw it. My phone rang before I could search for something and next thing I know, the ghosts are moving around and the music was playing.

I quickly hung up the phone to save my pac-ass.

google just got some respect from every high school student with banned sites

Amazing. A positive action from Google at least!

Going to game this, peace!

It's the original. Old school. We didn't have "changing level layouts". We played 256 times on the same level, and we LIKED it!

(Although having the fruit bounce around the level or something if you've brought in Ms. Pac would've been a nice touch...)

Ive been on Google for the last hour playing.

Anyone else getting this glitch where you'll randomly lose an extra life at the end of a level? I had three and died and came back with one.

Also, this is awesome. My day was made awesome because of this. Now, back to playing.

i just beat level one... thank you google.

Cant' imagine why.

Never underestimate a procrastinator's ability to latch onto something that isn't work. Virtual high-fives, yo!

<Gives Google a Cookie>

Freakin' awesome! While I agree I wish the levels changed as you progressed, it is still way awesome of a thing to do.

Spent whole open period at school playing this. They eventually locked my computer but still a great way to kill an hour.

Gotta' love it when Google do stuff like this.

yo, if you put two coins in u get to play ms pacman as 2 player action

IT HAS TWO-PLAYER/MS. PACMAN!
